We went to see the new Queen Latifah movie, “Last Holiday” this afternoon. I had read good things about it, and since it was my turn to get to pick a movie (Tim picked King Kong right before Christmas), I picked this one. Tim and I both thought it was good – pretty clean, very funny and it “had heart” as I like to say. Afterwards, Tim offered to take me to Little Tokyo for teppanyaki, so we went there. The lines were long though, so we left and went to Pigskin, near our house. We ordered a slab of ribs and all the fixin’s, and it was deee-licious.

Well, it’s not a full size one, just a little kiosk or cart inside my Kroger. But hey, those of us who don’t live in the Pacific Northwest (or even a big metropolitan area) have to take what we can get! There’s a stand-alone Starbucks on County Line, but I don’t ever venture there. I wish they would open a full size one here, with a drive-through, but in the mean time, this is a good step.
The sign said “Opening Soon – Tuesday 1/24” so I’m pretty excited π Like Tim said, “I guess you’ll be shopping at Kroger a lot more now, huh?!” Well, I would like to, but they are quite a bit more expensive on a lot of items than Walmart. But, they do have this new Starbucks inside, and that’s a big draw for me. I can go and get whatever concoction I want, decaf in the afternoons, and enjoy my coffee while I do one of my other favorite things – go grocery shopping. Yes, I know. I’m weird that way. I went today and had a blast, and bought a lot of stuff I can’t find at Walmart, and a lot of stuff we don’t need to be eating, and spent a lot of money. Doesn’t that sound like fun?
Tidbits of random nothingness… that’s the tagline on my blog (or subtitle, I guess you could call it). Since I don’t really have anything to blather on about today (or any day, for that matter!), I’ll log a few random tidbits for the day. Not a whole lot else going on anyway. Feel free to talk amongst yourselves, hardy har har. π
– I have been working on loading photos in the Photos section of Hambones. I have a huge backlog, way back to last November. Yes, that’s me, the poster child for procrastination. I hope to get them finished today, but it may be later in the week. In the mean time, there are now new/old pictures loaded from Ethan’s birthday party in November, Thanksgiving, Don’s first deer, misc Tim golfing pictures, and the Hammons family lunch in early January. Go check them out if you are a registered user (you’ll have to be logged in to view photos). I still have all the Christmas ones left to load, so don’t look for those quite yet.
– I bought 2 avocados Monday at the grocery store. They were firm, so not ripe and ready to peel. I had thought they would ripen in a couple of days, as long as I left them out. I even went ahead and put them in a brown paper bag, which I’ve done before (to hasten the ripening process.) So, I want to use them tonight with dinner, and they are still pretty firm. What to do… what to do? I did a Blingo search and found that some people said to add a banana or apple to the bag to help speed up the ripening. I have never done this before. Have you? Does it work?
– How often do you buy new pillows for your bed? You know, the ones you sleep on, not decorative or toss pillows? We seem to go through ours pretty quick, or at least Tim does. I try to wash them every month or two, but I still seem to be replacing them once or twice a year. How often do you get new ones? I must admit I’m more adamant about these after seeing that Oprah show about dust mites and how things are in our beds. That show really grossed me out.
– Coming soon… the story about my squirrel feeder. Yes, random nothingness for another day. I know you’re beside yourself with anticipation. π
What’s that old cliche about something being “for the birds”? Does it mean it’s trivial or not worthwhile? Might have to go look that one up.
I had a busy day yesterday, and got a lot done. Today is a little more laid back. For one, it’s raining and grey and dreary and totally bleak here today. You look out the window and it’s the picture of a gray, rainy, winter day. Tim is not feeling well, he pulled a muscle in his neck while he was sleeping, or slept funny on it, and now he can barely move his neck. Poor thing, I never know what to do when he’s not feeling well. He doesn’t like to be bothered or fussed over.
OK, back to the title, this post is “for the birds”. Literally, not figuratively. My backyard was a virtual bird sanctuary yesterday afternoon. At one time, I counted 6 cardinals perched in my bradford pear tree. My bird feeders are nearly empty (well, the seed one, they don’t like the new suet one, more on that later). I need to refill them, but it’s raining and I think I’ll wait till the rain has passed.
I am still trying to learn to use my new camera Tim got me for Christmas. It has a lot more zoom, which I love, and more features. I feel like I should be getting better pictures, but so far I am getting a lot of blurry ones. I tried to take pictures of my birds yesterday afternoon, but I was at full zoom, standing inside the house (trying not to move and scare them and make them fly away), and shooting pictures through a mildly dirty window. So, I guess they could have been worse. Most of them are blurry… a few came out pretty good. Here’s the first one, and the others are in the extended entry.
Two cardinals, chatting, I guess!!!!
The original plan for today, the last Saturday in gun season, was for Tim to go hunting. However, after working 5 days this week, all day, and then having to work all 5 nights, most at 11 PM and until the wee hours of the morning, put a kink in that plan. Tim woke up this morning and decided he wanted to stay here and rest, and not go hunting.
I suspect a lot of that sentiment comes from the fact that he is obsessed with golf.
So far today :
– We ordered a golf video online, about how to practice and improve your swing
– We played out back with the club du jour, the pitching wedge. Several hours of hitting balls is rather exhausting.
– I raked leaves in the backyard and convinced Tim to help me get rid of them, and then he got all excited about raking them behind the fence (not our property, but his new golf area) and getting the leaves out of the way, so they don’t interfere with his golf practice. π
– We’re probably going to run to Lowe’s for a couple of things
– I’m planning on watching football, not sure if Tim will join me or play more golf, watch the Golf Channel, or read about golf. π
Just another day in paradise.
I haven’t really blogged much this week about anything personal. I’ve mostly been doing memes and tags. And that would be because of the obvious reason, there’s not a lot going on that’s blogworthy!
Here’s what is going on, in a blabbering, rambling sort of wrap-up:
– Been a good week, but busy. Tim is working up a storm. He’s had to work late 4 nights this week (starting at 10 or 11 PM and into the wee hours of the morning). I do my best to adapt my schedule to his.
– I’ve been happy this week for the return of new episodes of some of my favorite shows . Most notably, NCIS and House on Tuesday, Lost on Wednesday, Invasion on Wednesday (but I’m ready to give this one up, gotten very disillusioned and disinterested). I’m also really liking the new Dancing with the Stars on Thursday (until Survivor starts, then I’ll have a dilemma). Tonight is a busy tv night, we have 3 shows on at the same time – 9 PM. We’ll watch Battlestar Galactica and tape Numb3rs and Monk.
– I’ve been reading my new book and I’m in love, as I expected to be. I just love, love, love the Jan Karon Mitford books. So sad that this is the last one.
– And finally, today is the big shopping trip to Sam’s. I have a long list. I go every couple of months, but I really stock up about twice a year. This is the first of those trips. I should have a big tab by the time I am finished. π
Katelyn Ray is here!
Kathryn and Jeremy welcomed their first child today, Katelyn Ray. She was born at 5:43 PM today (Eastern Time), January 11, 2006. She weighs 8 lb and 2 oz and is 21″ long. Her Grandma Gail reports that she has some dark hair, just like her mom did when she was born! (I’ll have to dig out some of those pictures I took when I was a mere 14 years old, and scan them in so I can post!!!). Mom, baby and Dad are doing well, and I’m sure are very happy to finally be together.
Gail promises to send pictures soon, which I will post in Katelyn’s album on Hambones, and with her parents permission, here on my blog. We can’t wait to meet her! She has a pretty cool great-aunt and uncle in me and Tim, don’t you think?! π
Been fairly busy today. Tim had to work really late last night (two nights in a row now) and I had to leave early to go get my hair cut. I’ve been working around the house some today, and fighting problems and “irritants” on the website and this blog. I thought I had contracted some sort of IM virus, but I ran a full scan and Norton reports nothing. If anyone gets anything odd from me, especially via IM, please let me know.
I opened up a new theme that I downloaded and tweaked last night, and so far I like the way it looks. Everything works perfectly under FireFox, but I am seeing some little odds and ends that need fixing under IE. In a perfect world, all browsers would be equal. If you notice anything that looks off or weird, please let me know.
In baby news, we’re waiting to hear from North Carolina. Gail drove home yesterday, and then we got an email early this morning that they had turned around and were headed back. Still waiting on news of baby Katelyn Ray. Will post here and on the main website when we have a new baby! π
Well, I’ve spent a lot of today snoozing. I’m still not feeling great, and I got pretty worn out yesterday. We had a great time at the family dinner and getting to see everyone. Then, my mother-in-law (Linda) and I went shopping all afternoon and got home around dark. The guys all went hunting and Mitchell shot a small buck, so that he could send Fred home with some meat, which was very good of him and we all appreciated it. π Tim was pretty tired too, I think, so we didn’t stay too late.
I slept a long time last night, probably 11 hours or so, and then took a long nap this afternoon, and I feel like I still need more sleep. What’s up with that? I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired, won’t someone please take these germs and sore throat and cough and make them leave, and stay gone? Please?!
I’ve been watching football most of the afternoon (when I’m not snoozing) and Tim has been playing golf. Yes, folks, it’s true. Tim has converted to a golf freak. He now watches the Golf Channel all the time. He hits balls out back every time he’s home and there’s daylight. He is consumed with golf. And doesn’t seem to care at all about THE PLAYOFFS. Yes, like I told him, who would have ever thought that I would sit and watch football and cheer by myself while he’s out back, whacking away at little white balls.
Here’s Tim with his new net I got him for Christmas… and click on the extended entry to see a few posed “people pics” from yesterday’s family dinner at Tim’s aunt’s house…
Tim and his new net, practicing his swing:
We’re headed out in just a minute, to go to Tim’s aunt’s house for a family dinner. This is his dad’s side of the family and they usually have a get-together the first couple of weeks in January, after the holidays are over, and people have more time to get together and visit. We usually go, and always have a good time seeing everyone.
Afterwards, Linda and I are going shopping and Tim is going to go back to their house and go deer hunting. Fred is supposed to come go hunting too, so we will get to see him also, which will be good. We will probably be back late, so I won’t blog again till tomorrow sometime. We’ll miss the playoff games today, which we hate, so we’re going to try to be here tomorrow afternoon to watch the rest of them. π
Robitussin Honey Cough is my new friend. Tim got up about 7 AM this morning and went and got me a bottle. I took some, and promptly went back to sleep and didn’t cough once for over an hour. It was heaven, sheer heaven.
I don’t know why, but I have this nagging cough, and have had it for several days. It seems to be getting worse, and not better. I’ve had a sore throat for a while, but it’s not so bad that I need to go to the doctor. The cough, however, seems to be getting worse. So bad, that I threw up yesterday. Twice. Ick. I hate to throw up. It’s just so gross. I don’t think I have a stomach thing, I think it’s the cough and throat stuff that made me throw up. Or, at least, I hope so.
I am counting down the hours till I can take more cough syrup, and I’m really looking forward to taking some tonight before bedtime. I haven’t had a good night’s sleep in 3 or 4 nights, so I can’t wait π
P.S. For anyone who cares, Tim found out the hard way that only our Walgreens is open at 7 AM. They have been building drug stores on every corner it seems, so we thought more of them would be open. But, nope, he found out the hard way that only our Walgreens was open at that time of the morning. Good to know, though
Things are starting to get back to normal around here. We took down the Christmas decorations last week, so that always helps. I always miss them when they are first gone, especially all the lights from the tree, my Snow Village and outside lights after dark. But, as much as I miss them for a few days, it’s always nice to get things cleaned up and sort of back to normal.
Tim had the day off yesterday, and we just hung around here. Neither one of us is feeling 100%. We both have these nagging cold/sinus/throat/cough thingies going on. Which doesn’t make sense, with it so warm outside. I think it got to nearly 80ΓΒΊ yesterday. Tim got out back and hit golf balls for a while, and we went walking, so that was all good. He watched most of the bowl games, and I got some things done around here, although I have a lot more to do today. Now that Tim is back to work at the office, I can get more cleaned up around here!
Happy New Year, everyone! Hope 2006 is a great year for us all π
We didn’t stay up to ring in the new year. We watched some football, a movie and then the first part of Dick Clark’s NY Eve show. I was curious to see how he looked and talked (bad, I thought). Tim was not feeling well at all, so we went to bed early. We heard lots of fireworks around us early though, some as early as 7 PM.
Today, I’ll fix my traditional NY Day food – ham, cabbage and black-eyed peas. Gotta get all that superstitious good luck going right on the first day of the brand new year. We’ll watch more football, I’m sure (and keep an eye on the fantasy football league, final championship game ongoing between Tim and Elizabeth, and consolation game going on with me and Gail, hehehe), and watch another movie. Should be a quiet first day of the new year.
We got home a little while ago, from Don and Gail’s house. We had a really good trip and Don and Tim seemed to have a really good time going duck hunting. The guys got up at 3:30 this morning, so by the time they got back (about 1:30 or 2:00 PM), both of them were pretty worn out. Tim is asleep right now on the couch, although he’d never admit it π
I think we’re going to have a very quiet, stay-at-home kind of New Years Eve. I don’t really like to get out anyway, too many people and too many crazies that might be out. So, we’ll stay in and watch football and movies, like an ole married couple
Guess what – Don shot his very first deer yesterday! As previously reported, Tim, Don, David and Fred went deer hunting at Tim’s parents house and Don shot a doe! Linda took some pictures, but we haven’t gotten them yet, so I don’t have any to post yet. I think the smearing blood ritual was observed, as is the custom over there. π
While the guys went hunting, Gail and I went shopping. Isn’t that what the women are supposed to do? π We were gone all afternoon and hit a lot of stores and bought a lot of fun stuff. We picked up some after-Christmas things at Target, and I was very surprised at how much they had left of Christmas stock (I like to buy paper, bows, cards, etc and put them up for the next year). We also hit the mall and the Yankee Candle store, the calendar kiosk (Gail and I like to buy calendars after Christmas, when they are 50% off!), Bath and Body Works and Kirklands. We also went to Marshalls and TJ Maxx and we each bought a cute batter bowl in TJ Maxx.
Don, Gail and David spent the night last night and stayed up late watching a movie with Tim. I wimped out and went to bed early (still fighting this sore throat). The guys have gone this morning to the driving range to pound some golf balls. I think we’re going to head up to Gail’s house late this afternoon, Tim and I, and spend the night so that Tim can get up at 4 AM and go duck hunting with Don. Lots of hunting going on around here!
