Question

QuestionI have a question for those of you who do PaperBackSwap.com or a similar program. Or maybe even for those of you who occasionally mail books. Actually, it’s kind of a lame question, but I’m going to ask anyway! How do you wrap your books to go in the mail, and do you go to the post office every time you mail a book?

I have been considering joining PaperBackSwap or a similar program, but the one thing holding me back is that I hate (detest, loathe, abhor, etc) going to the post office. My small town has a really nice post office, not that far from my house, but it’s always SO crowded. I’ve never gone there and stood in line behind less than 4 or 5 people. I’ve been in there several times (and not even at Christmas) and there’s been 8 or 10 people ahead of me in line. There’s usually only one or maybe two windows open at a time, and I just hate to wait in line. I know, I know, I’m impatient and it’s really not that much time out of my day, but it’s one of those things I just really don’t like to do. Sort of a pet peeve of mine, I guess.

So, if you mail out books, do you always go to the post office? Is there any other way to make sure they get there with enough postage on them? And if you do PaperBackSwap or another book program, do you use special mailers? Do you just wrap regular paper around your book? Do you put it in a big manila envelope? Do you put it in a padded envelope or even a box?

Leave me a comment and let me know… I want to know exactly how you all mail books! πŸ™‚

Rockin Girl Blogger Awards

Wow, someone thinks me or my blog rocks! I think it’s so cool, and many thanks to Trish and Annie for nominating me for the “Rockin Girl Blogger Awards”! I think I must have the nicest, sweetest, most thoughtful set of blogging buddies a girl could have!

“The Wrong Funeral”

I got this in an email from a dear friend of mine. Rather than just passing it on via email, I thought I would just post it here. Hope you enjoy it!

Consumed by my loss, I didn’t notice the hardness of the pew where I sat. I was at the funeral of my dearest friend — my mother. She finally had lost her long battle with cancer. The hurt was so intense, I found it hard to breathe at times. Always supportive, Mother clapped loudest at my school plays, held a box of tissues while listening to my first heartbreak, comforted me at my father’s death, encouraged me in college, and prayed for me my entire life.

When mother’s illness was diagnosed, my sister had a new baby and my brother had recently married his childhood sweetheart, so it fell on me, the 27-year-old middle child without entanglements, to take care of her.

I counted it an honor. “What now, Lord?” I asked sitting in church. My life stretched out before me as an empty abyss. My brother sat stoically with his face toward the cross while clutching his wife’s hand. My sister sat slumped against her husband’s shoulder, his arms around her as she cradled their child. All so deeply grieving, no one noticed I sat alone. My place had been with our mother, preparing her meals, helping her walk, taking her to the doctor, seeing to her medication, reading the Bible together.

Now she was with the Lord. My work was finished, and I was alone. I heard a door open and slam shut at the back of the church. Quick & steady footsteps hurried along the carpeted floor. An exasperated young man looked around briefly and then sat next to me. He folded his hands and placed them on his lap. His eyes were brimming with tears. He began to sniffle. “I’m late,” he explained, though no explanation was necessary. After several eulogies, he leaned over and commented, “Why do they keep calling Mary by the name of ‘Margaret?” “Because that was her name Margaret, never Mary. No one called her “Mary,” I whispered! I wondered why this person
couldn’t have sat on the other side of the church.

He interrupted my grieving with his tears and fidgeting. Who was this stranger anyway? “No, that isn’t correct,” he insisted, as several people glanced over at us whispering, “Her name is Mary, Mary Peters.”

“That isn’t who this is.” “Isn’t this the Lutheran church?” “No, the Lutheran church is across the street.” “Oh.” “I believe you’re at the wrong funeral, Sir.”

The solemnness of the occasion mixed with the realization of the man’s mistake bubbled up inside me and came out as laughter. I cupped my hands over my face, hoping it would be interpreted as sobs. The creaking pew gave me away. Sharp looks from other mourners only made the situation seem more hilarious. I peeked at the bewildered, misguided man seated beside me.

He was laughing too, as he glanced around, deciding it was too late for an uneventful exit. I imagined Mother laughing. At the final “Amen,” we darted out a door and into the parking lot.

“I do believe we’ll be the talk of the town,” he smiled. He said his name was Rick and since he had missed his aunt’s funeral, asked me out for a cup of coffee. That afternoon began a lifelong journey for me with this man who attended the wrong funeral, but was in the right place. A year after our meeting, we were married at a country church where he was the assistant pastor. This time we both arrived at the same church, right on time.

In my time of sorrow, God gave me laughter. In place of loneliness, God gave me love. This past June we celebrated our twenty-second wedding anniversary. Whenever anyone asks us how we met, Rick tells them, “Her mother and my Aunt Mary introduced us, and it’s truly a match made in heaven.”

The Desk

OK, so I was tagged by Debi, then prompted by my sister Gail, and then tagged by Judi to show a photo of my desk. Well. This one is a toughie… I don’t have a desk!

See, I had a desktop PC for the last 3 years, but we bought me a laptop last month (March), for our anniversary. The reason being that my husband is working more and more from home, and he needed a desktop space more than I did. So, we got me a laptop so he could take over the desk in our home office area (spare bedroom where we keep all of the computers, craft stuff and just junk in general!).

But, since everyone asked so nicely, here’s what I could come up with:

Here’s Tim’s desk:
Desk in the office

And, when I snuck in to take a picture, Tim caught me before I could sneak back out. He asked what I was doing, and I explained it to him. Then, he gets a big grin on his face and says “why don’t you take a pictures of the MESS up under the desk?”. He knows I don’t like to advertise how messy certain areas of our house are on my blog, or to people in general. This one is entirely his doing though. When we had problems with Hambones a few weeks ago, he had to pull everything out to work on the hardware. Needless to say, he didn’t “tidy” things up when he finished. So this mess of wires is NOT my doing πŸ˜€

Messy Wires
P.S. That’s Hambones folks, both of those PC’s and all of those wires!

Lastly, in lieu of a desk, I’ll show you where my laptop resides the majority of the time. Sitting on the ottoman next to my favorite chair, which is next to a window overlooking my backyard. I can see lots from this vantage spot, so it’s one of my favorite places:
Laptop Zone

OK, I know you’re supposed to tag someone, but I’m not in a tagging mood. If you’d like to play along, that would be superduperfantabulous πŸ™‚ Just leave me a comment so I can come check out your desk or work area πŸ˜€

Thinking Blogger Awards

Thinking Blogger Awards

Well, mercy me. Will wonders never cease! Two different bloggers, Karen (from over at Write from Karen), and Christine (from over at Are We There Yet?), have both nominated me for a “Thinking Blogger Award”. I am totally speechless, very surprised and rather humbled by this gesture.

After I picked myself up off the floor, I stopped and thought… do these incredibly smart and sweet ladies really think that this is a “thinking” blog? It’s a very boring, very mundane kind of blog. I blather on about very little. This is by design. I’m a very non-confrontational kind of person in real life — I don’t debate politics, religion, my beliefs, world affairs, the economy, the tax system or even global warming (although I do talk some about global warming!) with friends and family, much less on my blog. I named my blog “Exceedingly Mundane” because it’s just that – extremely low-level and boring. I talk about food. I do memes. I talk about books I’ve read. I talk about my dog and how he likes to chase bugs, birds, lizards and squirrels. I talk about Tim and tell everyone what a wonderful guy I found who somehow, miraculously, puts up with me every day. I know I’m boring. I know I’m not a thinker. I prefer light and fluffy. I like escapism.

And yet, they nominated me for this. Thank you ladies. Thank you for thinking so highly of me and for nominating me. I am truly honored. As per the rules of the Thinking Blog Awards, I am to do the following:

1. If, and only if, you get tagged, write a post with links to 5 blogs that make you think.
2. Link to this post so that people can easily find the exact origin of the meme.
3. Optional: Proudly display the Γ’β‚¬ΛœThinking Blogger AwardÒ€ℒ with a link to the post that you wrote.

On to my nominations:

1. Southern Girl at Southern Girl’s Guide to Almost Anything – Southern Girl is a hoot and she constantly reminds me of what it is to be Southern, to be a female sports fan, to be a tv/music fan. We share a lot of the same interests, including our photos for Project365. Some of her posts make me laugh and some of them make me think – like one she posted last week about the book/tv show on “1000 Places to see before you die“. It really made me think – I tried but couldn’t come up with 100. Her list made me look up a lot of places I had never heard of and learn about some new places on our planet.

2. Susie at Susiepie.com – Susie is constantly writing engaging, intellectual, moral and incredibly well written posts. She does a great job of showing me things on the Internet that always interest me, but that I would never, ever have found on my own. She and I share a very similar interest in books and authors, and she is always giving me wonderful book recommendations πŸ™‚

3. Dianne at Unfinished Work – Dianne writes the most incredible posts. About her life, things that happened in her childhood, her recent break from blogging and her spiritual retreat. She’s always making me think, think about my life, about my faith, about my family, past and present. Just in the last week or so, she’s written three incredible posts that really made me stop and really think about my life (read them here, here and here). I love seeing that she has a new blog post up, I can’t wait to go read it and see what she is going to say next!

4. Deb at Sugarfused.net – Deb constantly amazes me with her photographs. I want to be like Deb when I grow up. I want to have her eye for taking photographs, her knowledge on camera modes and perspective and photo editing software. I want to shoot one picture in my life with my digital camera that would stand up to the photos she posts on a daily basis. I stand in awe of her talent. She constantly challenges me and makes me think about the photographs I take, how I take them, and how to set them up. And, she makes me think, gee, will I ever be as good as Deb?!

5. my sister Gail at More Than a Song – last, but not least, my sister Gail. Gail and I think alike. We know the same people. We like a lot of the same things. It’s a no brainer that I love her blog and that it makes me think – although, a lot of the time, I think “why didn’t I think of that first?! LOL πŸ˜€

Flickr Question

OK, I’m sure this is easy and I’m just overlooking it, but I can’t figure out how to do something in Flickr. I have “sets” of my pictures, like groups. I want to choose a different picture to be the “highlight” for my set. It seems to take the first picture that I loaded into that set as the default one to highlight for that set. Is there a way to change it? If there is, please let me know!

Thanks!

Fall Color

Well, it’s a bit late, but we are finally seeing some really pretty fall color around our house. The trees are changing, and very fast. Our bradford pear tree in the back yard, and all of the ones in our neighbor’s yards, are really looking gorgeous. They have a lot of red and yellow on them, but I know it’s not going to last. We’re expecting some rain to move through later today, and the wind is really picking up, and we are losing a lot of leaves today on these trees.

I took this picture a couple of days ago, when the sun was shining on my tree in the backyard. I thought it came out pretty good πŸ™‚

Emmitt Won!

Yeah, I am still so excited that Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke won Dancing with the Stars! Yeah, Emmitt! I have been rooting for him all season and voting up a storm and I’m so glad he won. I think that probably Mario and Joey were both better dancers, but they both were to begin with, and I think Emmitt has come a lot further. Plus, he just has so much charisma and his smile just lights everything up. I really like him and it’s a huge plus for me that he’s a football player. Yeah, I’m still so excited he won!

Question of the Day

OK, in an effort to not talk about food or my new dog, I thought I’d ask another mundane question for today. I was cleaning up in the bathroom and got to thinking about how I store my makeup. Right now, I just have it in a travel bag shoved in one of our bathroom drawers. I guess I got into the habit of doing that years ago, when we traveled more and were often gone on the weekends. It seemed easier to keep it packed up so I could just grab it and go.

So the Question of the Day is – how do you store your make-up? Is it in the bathroom? In a drawer, cabinet, out on the counter? What kind of container(s) do you use to hold things in? Do you keep a separate travel size bag of things ready to go, or do you just pack up your make-up when you leave to go somewhere?

Hope everyone is having a great day… it’s just beautiful here and I’m so loving this weather!

Joke of the Day

Tim emailed me this, and I thought it was funny! In a redneck, gotta love the South, kind of way! πŸ™‚

“Hello, is this the Sheriff’s Office?”

“Yes. What can I do for you?”

“I’m calling to report ’bout my neighbor Virgil Smith. He’s hidin’ marijuana inside his firewood! Don’t quite know how he gets it inside them logs, but he’s hidin’ it there.”

“Thank you very much for the call, sir.” The next day, the Sheriff’s Deputies descend on Virgil’s house. They search the shed where the firewood is kept. Using axes, they bust open every piece of wood, but find no marijuana. They sneer at Virgil and leave.

Shortly, the phone rings at Virgil’s house. “Hey, Virgil. This here’s Floyd …. did the Sheriff come?”

“Yeah!”

“Did they chop your firewood?”

“Yep!”

“Happy Birthday, buddy!”

Trying to Decide…

I wanted a new template for my blog for fall. I have been looking around and have not really found anything close to what I want in a premade design for the version of WordPress I use. Alas, I’m not really smart enough to change one up very much and I am nowhere near smart enough to design one from the ground up. So, for lack of anything better, I found one with some fallish colors that I sort of like. Let me know if you’re seeing this ok now, it’s browns and rusty orange colors. Please let me know if you have any trouble with any part of the blog now… I may go back to my blue and white soon, you never know! πŸ™„

Happy Birthday Zack!

Happy, Happy, Happy Birthday to our nephew Zack!

Zack was born on Labor Day, eleven years ago today. Tim and I were at the hospital all afternoon, waiting for him to make his big arrival into the world. He’s a great kid, and we love him to pieces. Happy Birthday Zack – hope you have a terrific birthday!

Coon: Catch and Release

I blogged over the weekend about our coon trap, and how we were trying to catch the little buggers.

See – the coons are tearing up our backyard. They climb up in the tree and break the branches, trying to get to the bird feeder. We find the bird feeder on the ground (along with broken branches), sometimes the feeder is broken and all the suet is gone. The other bird feeder that is on a shepherd’s hook will be pushed to the ground, and all the bird seed scattered all over the ground. And the big thing is that they LOVE the squirrel’s corn. The coons either eat the entire cob or simply take it with them. So, we bought a “HavAHeart” large animal cage at Lowe’s and put it out. Saturday morning, we got up and found this:

Coon #1 in the cage

He was “playing possum” I guess πŸ™‚ He turned around when I came up with the camera:

Coon #1 in the cage

He was a pretty large little guy. Here he is up close:

Coon #1 Up Close

I came inside and called the Animal Control number for our local police. I was politely informed that they only dealt with domesticated animals and he gave me the phone number for the Wildlife and Fisheries, or some state dept. I called that number and was told they don’t do that either, and he gave me another number to call. Basically, we played “pass the buck”. I called 4 or 5 places and never got any help, so we gave up on that. Tim, the consummate country boy, said “we’ll just take him up towards the Trace, in some woods, and drop him off”. Hence, we basically just catch and release them.

We caught another one Sunday night and released him Monday morning in the same spot. If they are related, then hopefully they found each other and can go rob someone else’s yard of all their food. Click on the extended page for pictures of the second coon, he was a bit smaller.

Song: Before He Cheats

I was running errands the other day, and had my Carrie Underwood CD playing in the car. When it got to this song, I turned it way up and started belting it out. πŸ˜› Yes, I sing rather loudly, and badly, when no one is around and I’m either cleaning or driving around by myself. This is just one of those really good sassy, the-girl’s-got-attitude kind of songs.

The name of it is “Before He Cheats” and I’ve liked it (and several others) since I got this CD months ago. I was wondering when she would release it as a single. Then, this morning, I saw her singing on “Good Morning America” and she sang this song and said it was her new one. I’m so glad. I think it’s a great song (well, if you like country!)

I’ve been trying to find a way to insert an mp3 file in my blog entries, and I think, I hope, that I have finally figured it out. Please let me know if it does or does not work for you. Here’s the song, and the lyrics are on the extended page:
