Aerator

Tim went this morning, while it was still partly sunny, and rented an aerator. It’s something we’ve been wanting to do for a while, but just keep putting it off each spring. Our grass has gotten really bad, lots of thatch, more weeds than grass, and it just really needs a lot of TLC. Aerating it is the first step. We’re going to get sand soon, and spread it out, and it also needs a heaping dose of fertilizer and lots of water.

Here’s the first step – Tim aerated it this morning:

And, thankfully, at long last – we’re forecast to get rain today. We got one good shower around lunch, and are getting some light showers most all afternoon.

Here comes the rain!

Raining, finally

Cock of the Walk

We went out to eat tonight, to one of our favorite places – Cock of the Walk, out on the Reservoir. We don’t splurge very often and go here, as it’s not healthy (all fried foods). But, man, it’s good!

They basically serve one thing – fried catfish. They actually have fried chicken on the menu, I think, but we’ve never gotten it. We just order fish, for two. You get a skillet of cornbread (flipped tableside by your waiter), fried catfish, french fries, hush puppies, coleslaw and pickled onions. We sometimes get the fried dill pickles as a side, but we didn’t tonight.

New Scents

If you’ve read my blog much, or know me personally, you know that I have developed a new-found obsession for obtaining and burning Yankee Candles in the last couple of years. I love them, can’t get enough of them. I buy different ones every time, and yes, horror of horrors, I’ve even been known to burn different smells in different rooms at the same time. I know, it’s not right, but I do it sometimes.

Tim indulged me at both my birthday last fall and at Christmas and bought me new jar candles. No, I have not burned all of those up yet. In fact, I haven’t even started burning the Farmhouse Apple I got at Christmas. No, that doesn’t stop me from coveting more, from wanting to try new scents, and yes, actually purchasing some. I got a small one a couple of weeks ago at Bed, Bath and Beyond (using a coupon), called Juicy Orange. I haven’t burned it yet, so I don’t know if I will like it. I loved the Juicy Cherry one I got last summer, so if I don’t like this one, I will probably go pick up a Juicy Cherry one again.

Then, yesterday, when I was shopping with Wendy, I found one I had been wanting since last summer – Cherry Lemonade. I’m burning it now and I love it. Tim, on the other hand, hates it, so I have it back in the office by my computer.

Here’s my newest ones:

A Time for Firsts

I was gone most of yesterday (Tuesday), out playing hooky again  Wendy drove over from Vicksburg, and left her son Nathan with her mom, and we hooked up to go out to eat and shop. We went to a new place for me (Wendy had eaten there before) called Roly Poly. There’s two in Jackson and one in Hattiesburg, I see from checking out their website. I’m glad we went, because when I came home and told Tim about it, and how it was wraps, and it was really good, he goes “wraps, is that all they have?” And then, “I’m not a wrap guy”. So, it’s a really good thing I got to go with Wendy! It was really good, and pretty cheap too. I had a turkey applejack wrap, which was grilled, along with a fruit cup and tea. Wendy had a Chicken Caesar wrap, and hers looked really good too (pictures on the extended page, courtesy of my new cameraphone!). After lunch, we ran errands and shopped on Lakeland for a while. Wendy was looking for some photo frames, and I was just looking 🙂 We had a great time, and hated that our friend Julie was not feeling well and couldn’t come with us. Maybe next time!

Oh, and I had another first yesterday – my first frappucino from Starbucks! Wendy and I had a caramel frappucino later in the afternoon at Starbucks and it was delicious! I think I’ve found something I will have more often in the summer, it’s nice to have a cool drink instead of a hot drink when it’s in the 90’s around here!

Easter Pictures

Dyed Eggs I still have a whole bunch of pictures to load onto the Photos section of Hambones, but in the mean time, I sized a few down to include here on my blog.

UPDATE: OK, the Easter pictures are up on Hambones, but no text under them yet. Sigh, adding captions takes a long time and I just haven’t gotten to it yet. 🙂

Weekend Report

Marble Slab CreameryWhew, it’s been a busy few days around here lately. Just felt the need to recap, for myself and others 🙂

Friday afternoon, Tim got off work a little early, so we headed out to go shopping. We went to Kohl’s and got him several new shirts for spring and summer. We ate supper at …

Happy Easter

I hope everyone has a wonderful and blessed Easter holiday weekend. We’re headed out in a few minutes to see family. We’re going down to Hattiesburg, where we will visit with my dad, and also go over to Tim’s brother’s house. They are going to have a big Easter egg-dyeing and Easter egg hunt there for our niece and nephew (Ethan and Abby). Tim’s parents are coming down also to participate. Tomorrow, we have a big get-together to go to at Tim’s aunt’s house, which he’s really looking forward to. He loves getting to see all of his aunts, uncles and cousins (his mom has 7 siblings). There’s usually 60 or 70 people there, and lots of good food too.

Happy Easter to everyone 🙂

Playing Hooky

I played hooky yesterday for a change! I went to lunch with my friends Julie and Wendy, and Wendy’s son Nathan. We had a great time visiting, and catching up (and eating!). It was sooo good to see them, we need to do that more often. We went to Logans and although I tried to take a couple of pictures with my new cameraphone, most of them didn’t come out. Funny lighting in there. I did get one cute picture of Nathan (he needed a little help cleaning up, after eating all of his squash!):

Nathan at Logan's

After lunch, I went to Target and then out to Kohl’s. I picked up a couple of new shirts for spring, a new purse (actually two, I have to decide which one to keep and which to take back), and some flip flops. I am intending to spend my whole summer in either tennis shoes or flip flops. None of those cutesy girlie shoes for me! Just kidding. Anyway, it was nice to leave all the chores and housework at home for a day and play hooky. Tim was working in one of the flower beds when I got home, so I went walking by myself. It’s such beautiful spring weather, and I am really enjoying being outside.

M-Braves Game

We had a busy weekend, with a really full, but fun, day on Saturday. We did some stuff around here, most notably, Tim fixed the tiller that has been broken since last summer. He also cut the grass (well, the weeds, we have tons more weeds than grass) and got things cleaned up outside.

We left to go run some errands in the late afternoon, then we headed out to Trustmark Park for the M-Braves game Saturday night. I lobbied to go over to Bass Pro Shop to eat at their new restaurant (Islamadora Fish Company), but Tim wanted the “whole ballpark experience”, so we ate at the game. Hot Dogs, Chili Cheese Fries and a drink.

It was chilly when we got there, and it got colder all night. The wind was blowing constantly out of the north at 10-15mph. After the first couple of innings, I was a block of ice. I ended up borrowing an extra blanket from the very nice family sitting next to us. In addition, we had two groups of coaches/scouts or some kind of organizational people sitting in front of us, and to my right. We had GREAT seats, right behind home plate, and apparently that’s where the guys keeping stats (on Palm Pilots as well as paper), running the pitching radar guns and the big wigs sat. I saw one guy come back with hot chocolate and I asked him which concession stand he found that at (since we hadn’t found any yet, they have different concessions selling different items). He said, “I made it in the clubhouse, would you like me to go get you one?” And I was like, “Oh no, but thank you. I just wondered where you got it”. A couple of innings later, he came and brought me 2 hot chocolates from the clubhouse, which I thought was so nice of him. I think these were the guys from the other team (Huntsville Stars), but he was so thoughtful. I kept one for me and Tim and shared the other with the lady who had loaned me a blanket. Like I told the guy, he made our whole row happy! 🙂

Anyway, we had great seats, and a great time. Those games are so much fun! There’s a lot going on, including a great mascot (Reggie), and fun stuff at every half inning. This was only the third home game and they had lost the first two games, and they didn’t start out well. But, then they had a big rally in the bottom of the 5th inning, and we were clapping, yelling and screaming, and waving our red tomahawks they gave us when we walked in (free from Cellular South). It was a blast! We left a little early (top of the 8th inning, had to stay for the 7th inning stretch!), and it was still 5-2. We went to the new Starbucks near the stadium in Pearl, and got drinks since we were both so cold. Grande dark roast for Tim, and Tall NonFat Decaf Vanilla Latte for me. Mmmm, good. Tim and I had a great time and hope to go back a bunch more this season.

Since this was one of the first home games, they were giving out big magnets with the entire schedule on them, so I got one and put it on the fridge. We know when all the home games are now, so everyone come and go to a game with us! They’re fun 🙂

Here’s Tim at the game, holding his tomahawk… more pictures on the extended page:

Outta Here!

We had a busy day on Saturday and a big and eventful time at the M-Braves game Saturday night. I’ll try to catch up later today or tomorrow on all of that.

In the mean time, we’re out of here! Tim and I are driving over to his parents. Our niece Brittany is being baptized today and we’re going. Back later, not sure when.

P.S. We plan to either watch or tape the movie on TV tonight based on a Robert Ludlum book. Tim is a huge Ludlum fan, and the movie is “Covert One”. Check it out!

Snapdragons

I love flowers blooming in the spring. Even more than that, I love having flowers I didn’t expect to come back and bloom again. I planted some snapdragons last fall in one of my flower beds. Most of them looked pretty ragged when I pulled them up in the winter, but two of them looked half alive, so instead of throwing them in the trash, I stuck them in an old flower pot behind my fence. Didn’t plant them, didn’t water them, didn’t fertilize them. I just made a hole with my hand in an old pot with old dirt, stuck them in, and covered their roots.

This spring, they have come back and bloomed beautifully. Here’s a collage of some of the pictures I have taken… making them smaller to fit in one collage really takes away from how pretty they are. So, I’m including a couple of pictures on the extended page. Even then, the pictures don’t do them justice! The colors are just so vibrant and gorgeous – pink and yellow – so springy!

Spring Has Sprung

Well, several of the harbingers of spring have now come to pass for me… among them:

  • We’ve had to turn on the A/C already. It’s not on right now, but we had to run it this past weekend. Ugh. I always try to wait till late April or early May, but not this year.
  • I actually did a little spring cleaning the other day. {shudder} I vacuumed our mattress, vacuumed several of the blinds, and threw a bunch of the curtains in the dryer (to get all of the dust out of them, and fluff them up). I have not cleaned windows or moved furniture, thank goodness.
  • Today, I took the winter sheets (jersey, not flannel) off our bed and put on the summer (cotton) ones.
  • Finally, I did something I swore up and down I would not do. I always try to resist and not buy spring annual flowers until after Easter. I believe in that old wives tale about there always being one last freeze before Easter. I checked the 10 day forecast and no low’s in the 30’s forecast for us, so I broke down and bought one, just one, little annual to plant in a pot on my deck. I was very good and didn’t buy any more. I could have. And I wanted to. But, I didn’t, so hush your mouth.

I bought a New Guinea impatien. I don’t think I’ve tried these before, or haven’t in pots. I need to plant it tomorrow or the next day:

All’s Quiet on the Western Front

Or at least for now, all is quiet. Yesterday turned out to be a busy day at home, baking homemade bread, cooking, cleaning, laundry and other various and assorted tasks. Tim and I caught up on some TV that we had taped from earlier in the week last night. (He had to work a little while last night, too).

This morning, we got up and went for our 2 mile walk in our subdivision. Did a few things around the house, and now it’s all quiet here. Just me and myself and my iPod. Tim left a little while ago to go meet Don and play 18 holes of golf. So, I know he’s going to have a great day. 😆 I’m going to play on the computer, read and maybe do a little more laundry. We’re hoping that Elizabeth and Chris get to come over tonight. Hopefully their busy social schedule will allow it, and we can order pizza and play games or watch a movie. Should be fun!

On the rodent front , the squirrels have now found the feeder I put out for them. They are tearing through the corn cobs on an almost daily schedule. I have several more pictures of “furry rodents eating corn” if anyone is interested. So, if those excite you more than the flower or bird pictures, let me know and I can post some. I took a bunch of pictures a couple of days ago. I had a squirrel here for about 45 minutes and he ate about 3/4 of a corn cob right by himself. Little sucker was hungry!

Lastly, in addition to the bread I’ve been making, I made a new recipe the other night. A new recipe for alfredo sauce. I made fettucine alfredo with shrimp and we both really liked it. I’m going to make the sauce again in a couple of weeks and pour over penne, along with some grilled chicken and probably mushrooms. I would add broccoli, but Tim has turned into a broccoli-hater. Won’t touch the stuff. 🙄

    Happy Saturday, everyone!
