Tagged – 5 Things Meme

Lynne, over at Lynne’s Little Corner, tagged me a week or so ago with this fun “5 things” meme. Lynne included pictures with some of hers, but I’m afraid I’m not that industrious! (although I will add a couple of links) I did want to play along though, so thanks for tagging me, Lynne!

5 Things found in my room (I’ll use our living room, since I’m usually in here with my laptop):

Our Samsung big plasma TV 😀
These candles on my coffee table
Bookcases with so many of my lovely books
Big comfy chair with ottoman next to my fireplace (where I’m sitting now, with my laptop)
Seymour, perched on top of the entertainment center, since it’s football season 🙄

5 things I’ve always wanted to do:

Travel to England and Scotland
Visit all 50 US States
Go to a bed and breakfast in Vermont or somewhere in the NE during the fall, for “leaf peeping” 🙂
Learn to play some kind of musical instrument (but not enough to take lessons!)
More traveling I guess – all over Europe, Australia, etc

5 things found in my bag

(My purse is here)
Wallet
Palm and Cellphone
Sunglasses
Hand Sanitizer
Chapstick

5 things in my wallet

Driver’s license
Credit cards
Insurance Card
Library Card
small amount of cash

5 things I’m currently “in to”

Reading
Watching a ton of TV shows
Watching movies from Netflix
Blogging
Taking photos with my new camera

I won’t tag anyone specifically, but please feel free to play along if you’d like. Be sure to leave me a message if you do decide to play, so I can come check out your answers!

Have a great day 😀

This week’s topic: Preservatives

Today’s question comes from Conspiracy-Girl:
I’m still relatively new to this meme so I’m not sure if this has been asked yet, but I’m curious how many of us write notes in our books. Are you a Footprint Leaver or a Preservationist?

Well, another really easy question for me. I don’t write in my books at all. I *might* neatly print my name in the front, if it was a book I thought I might loan to someone and I wanted to make sure I got it back. I never underline in my books, make notes in the margins, or even turn down the corners. I think it’s something that was ingrained in me growing up. I never mar my books in any way. 🙂 So, yes, I’m a total Preservationist!

This week’s topic: Oh, Horror!

What with yesterday being Halloween, and all . . . do you read horror? Stories of things that go bump in the night and keep you from sleeping?

I thought about asking you about whether you were participating in NaNoWriMo, but I asked that last year. Although . . . if you want to answer that one, too, please feel free to go ahead and do both, or either, your choice!

Well, another really easy one for me this week. No on both counts!

As for horror, I don’t want anything to do with books or TV shows or movies that are even remotely scary or suspenseful. I don’t like things that go bump in the night. I don’t like things popping up on movies where I gasp and my heart beats. I don’t like to be scared. And believe me, I’m easily scared. I can be in our bathroom, brushing my teeth and Tim can walk around the corner and say something to me. I yell, scream and spew out toothpaste because he frightened me – in the middle of the day, when I knew he was in the house. So, no – horror is not a good genre for me 😀

As for NaNoWriMo, I don’t participate. I’m not much of a writer, although I have visions of grandeur and imagine I could write a best selling book one day. Of course, I have very little interest in actually sitting down to write a paragraph, much less a chapter or book. 🙂

This week’s topic: Read With Abandon

I would enjoy reading a meme about people’s abandoned books. The books that you start but don’t finish say as much about you as the ones you actually read, sometimes because of the books themselves or because of the circumstances that prevent you from finishing. So . . . what books have you abandoned and why?

Well, I haven’t participated in this meme in a week or so. I thought I’d play along today 🙂

This is a good one for me. I love to read, but I seem to be pretty settled in my reading habits. I don’t usually pick up books or authors that I don’t like. I think in the last 3 years, there have only been a handful of books that I didn’t really like or love. I can think of three off the top of my head, but I did go ahead and finish them. I didn’t really enjoy them, but I have a completion complex, so I usually struggle through until the end. I can’t think of a single book that I’ve read in the last few years that I abandoned and didn’t finish. I think I know what kind of books and authors I like, and I tend to stick with those. I don’t stray too much out of my comfort zone.

Let’s see, the ones I can think of that I didn’t enjoy (I didn’t abandon them, but I didn’t like them either) are: “Talk to the Hand” by Lynne Truss. This was just not something I’m interested in; it was more like a textbook than an enjoyable, escapism, fiction book, which is what I enjoy reading. “The Falls” by Joyce Carol Oates. Ugh. I disliked this book. I do not want to try anything else from this author. It was boring, depressing, and basically had no redeeming factors for me. Ick. The other one that I didn’t really enjoy was “The Last Days of Dogtown” by Anita Diamant. Now, I picked this one up without knowing anything about it, because I loved, loved, loved her book, “The Red Tent”. This one was just not something I wanted to read about though. Depressing and a huge downer. About a dying village and all bad things happening to the villagers. Didn’t enjoy this one. I like books that have a redeeming quality, good characters, a happy ending. 🙂

Happy Reading!

The Interview Meme

As seen on Kailani’s blog, An Island Life, a couple of weeks ago…

What kind of soap is in your bathtub right now? Tons of different ones. We have Lever 2000 body wash, I have some Dial body wash, then two scents of Bath and Body Works

Do you have any watermelon in your refrigerator? Nope. I have some other fruit, but not watermelon

What would you change about your living room? Gosh, where to start!

Are the dishes in your dishwasher clean or dirty? Dirty. I ran it yesterday, and always unload it as soon as it’s finished.

What is in your fridge? Lots of food! Hehehe. Milk, orange juice, leftovers, yogurt, lots of cheese, lettuce, carrots, condiments out the wazoo

White or wheat bread? Wheat

What is on top of your refrigerator? a decorative plate, some cookbooks, my George Foreman grill

What color or design is on your shower curtain? Maroon, striped

How many plants are in your home? 3 live ones that I want to get rid of and several fake ones

Is your bed made right now? Of course!

Comet or Soft Scrub? Both

Is your closet organized? My side is. You know who hasn’t worked on his.

Can you describe your flashlight? Pink. Really old. Tim has a lot of black, guy type flashlights in the garage and cars though

Do you drink out of glass or plastic most of the time at home? Plastic most of the time

Do you have iced tea made in a pitcher right now? Yes

If you have a garage, is it cluttered? Hmmm, a little. But that’s outside, so that’s Tim’s domain

Curtains or blinds? Both.

How many pillows do you sleep with? One

Do you sleep with any lights on at night? No way Jose. I have to have it dark to sleep. Just the little LED glow from electronics is more light than I like

How often do you vacuum? Once or twice a week

Standard toothbrush or electric? Regular one

What color is your toothbrush? Pink!

Do you have a welcome mat on your front porch? Yes, it has fall colored leaves on it and actually says “Welcome” in the center!

What is in your oven right now? Not a thing

Is there anything under your bed? Yes, and this is a forthcoming Question of the Day

Chore you hate doing the most? Probably dusting or cleaning the shower

What retro items are in your home? Nothing really. I have one antique, a love seat from my grandmother’s family that is probably 150-175 years old

Do you have a separate room that you use as an office? Yes, our spare bedroom

How many mirrors are in your home? I had to count! Six, decorative plus bathrooms

Do you have any hidden emergency money around your home? Umm, possibly

What color are your walls? Most of them are a neutral with a hint of a light peach to them. I hate them. I want to paint but I hate to paint. Master bathroom is a faux two-tone khaki and the kitchen is yellow. The only rooms we’ve repainted!

Do you keep any kind of protection weapons in your home? Yes, Tim does

What does your home smell like right now? the Yankee Candle “Harvest” candle I’m burning right now

Favorite candle scent? anything that smells like something baking or sweet

What kind of pickles (if any) are in your refrigerator right now? kosher baby dills

What color is your favorite Bible? Black

Ever been on your roof? No. But Tim has been up there many times.

Do you own a stereo? By stereo, if you can count the conglomeration of receivers, cd changers, woofer and surround sound speakers, yes!

How many TVs do you have? Three

How many house phones? Three

Do you have a housekeeper? Me!

What style do you decorate in? Comfy cozy

Do you like solid colors in furniture or prints? Most everything is a subtle print

Is there a smoke detector in your home? Yes, two sets. The builder installed electric ones, which we thought was stupid, because if the power is out, HELLO, they wont’ work. So right beside each of the electric ones, we installed battery powered ones.

In case of fire, what are the items in your house which you’d grab if you only could make one quick trip? Assuming Tim and Beau were safely out, I’d grab my laptop, my iPod, and as many photo albums and scrapbooks as I could get

Feel free to grab and play along at your blog, if you’d like. Leave me a message if you do, so I can come visit and read all of your answers! 🙂

This week’s topic: Decorum

Do you have “issues with too much profanity or overly explicit (ahem) “romantic scenes in books? Or do you take them in stride? Have issues like these ever caused you to close a book? Or do you go looking for more exactly like them? (grin)

Well, I imagine that I’m going to be the fuddy duddy of the group today, with this meme. I do have issues with both books and movies that have too much profanity in them. Or explicit “romantic” scenes. Or graphic violence. I don’t choose to watch movies like that. In the last several years, I have really almost refused to go to the theater to see movies like that, and if we rent them, I really prefer that Tim watch them without me. That’s not how I choose to spend those two hours of my life. I’m the same way with books. I don’t like a lot of profanity or explicit stuff, either romantic or violent. I don’t choose to fill with my life with things like that. So, I tend to read cleaner books, “women’s fiction” that is not too descriptive, or Christian fiction. It just fits me a lot better. 🙂

Happy Reading!

Foodie Meme

As seen recently on Magnolia Mom‘s blog… any meme related to FOOD is right up my alley!

1. How do you like your eggs? Any which way, as long as the white is not runny (I think that’s called “sunny side up”). I eat poached eggs, boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, eggs over easy (fried).

2. How do you take your coffee/tea? Coffee with lots of Splenda and creamer. Flavored creamer. Currently have White Chocolate Raspberry and French Vanilla in the fridge. Tea needs a bit of Splenda to sweeten it also. It’s a Southern “thang”, I guess 😀

3. Favorite breakfast food: I never met a breakfast food I didn’t like. I love cereal, eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, oatmeal, pancakes, waffles, and the list goes on and on.

4. Peanut butter – smooth or crunchy? Smooth for me. I won’t turn down crunchy, but I’d rather have creamy.

5. What kind of dressing on your salad? Honey mustard, a vinaigrette or most anything will be fine for me 🙂

6. Coke or Pepsi? COKE. Coke Zero specifically. If I go somewhere with only Pepsi products available, I want Code Red or Dr Pepper

7. You’re feeling lazy, what do you make? Breakfast food, rumien (Tim’s pumped up ramen noodle concoction), or maybe spaghetti

8. You’re feeling really lazy. What kind of pizza do you order? Tim would order supreme, but if I got to pick, it would either be a Hawaiian (pineapple and Canadian bacon or ham) or a pepperoni and mushroom combo

9. You feel like cooking. What do you make? A big pot of homemade soup and a loaf of homemade bread.

10. Do any foods bring back good memories? Chicken and dumplings or chicken and rice. I also have wonderful memories of some special meals out with Tim 🙂

11. Do any foods bring back bad memories? BEETS. I have a story that I’ve been meaning to blog about for ages. About how I had to sit at the table until I finished my plate. My plate had beets on it, even though I begged and pleaded for none to be put on my plate. I sat there for about 6 hours, until finally my mom screamed at my dad so much he finally let me get up. Which was wonderful, since I had had to pee for like 3 hours 🙁

12. Do any foods remind you of someone? Some foods remind me of Tim and others remind me of my grandmother. Oddly enough, I don’t remember any special ones from my mom, which is so sad.

More questions on the next page… 🙂

The Middle Name Meme

I’ve been tagged by several ladies to do the “Middle Name” meme. I’ve been in a decidedly non-tagging mood lately, but for whatever reason, I always feel terribly guilty for not doing them 🙂 So, without further ado, here’s my attempt at the Middle Name tag.

First, the rules:

1. You have to post these rules before you give the facts.

2. You must list one fact that is somehow relevant to your life for each letter of your middle name. If you don’t have a middle name, use the middle name you would have liked to have had.

3. At the end of your blog post, you need to choose one person for each letter of your middle name to tag. Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re tagged, and to read your blog.

Second, my middle name:

Herein lies one of the problems of me doing this tag and passing it along. I technically consider my maiden name to be my middle name now. When I got married, I dropped my given middle name that I received at birth. However, since I don’t wish to “advertise” my current middle name (my maiden name), I’ll revert to my given middle name. Which is short – three letters! So, I’m afraid this won’t be a very interesting middle name meme 🙂

A Analytic. I have a fairly analytical mind, or at least I like to think I do! I have a degree in mathematics and computer science, and I worked with engineers and analysts for years. I don’t think like most women do, and I am usually more comfortable around men, who think logically and not emotionally. I work really hard at thinking more like women and relating to my fellow females, but when it comes to certain things, I am very logical, very processed, very analytical.

N Neat. See description of the letter “A”. My mom was a “a place for everything, everything in its place” kind of mom. I learned early on to be neat. To make my bed every day. To put things back where they belong. To organize and sort things. Being a logical sort of girl, this goes right along with my way of thinking 🙂

N Nutty. If you’ve read the previous two descriptions, you should now have no doubt that I’m a little bit on the nutty side . I think I’m a fairly nice person, but let’s face it, I’m a bit nutso 🙂 Seriously, I don’t think I have that many hang-ups, but my friends and family LOVE to point out all of my shortfalls and less than stellar character traits, so I’m sure they would all come up with a lot more reasons than this to call me a little bit nutty. 🙂

Third, I’m supposed to tag another set of bloggers, equal to the number of letters in my middle name. I’m now going to completely buck the trend and not play along. I won’t tag anyone specifically, as this one has been going around a bit. But, please feel free to play along if you’d like, and be sure to leave me a message if you do – so I can come visit you and read your much-more-interesting answers to this meme!

Goldilocks

Okay, so the other day, a friend was commenting on my monthly reading list and asked when I found the time to read. In the ensuing discussion, she described herself as a “goldilocks when it comes to reading–she needs to have everything juuuuuust right to be able to focus. This caught my attention because, first, I thought that was a charming way of describing the condition, but, two, while we’ve talked about our reading habits, this is an interesting wrinkle. I’d never really thought about it that way.

So, this is my question to you–are you a Goldilocks kind of reader?

Do you need the light just right, the background noise just so loud but not too loud, the chair just right, the distractions at a minimum?

Or can you open a book at any time and dip right in, whether it’s for twenty seconds, while waiting for the kettle to boil, or indefinitely, like while waiting interminably at the hospital–as long as the book is open in front of your nose, you’re happy to read?

Another good question today over at Booking Through Thursday! I’m afraid that I am a bit of a Goldilocks 🙂 Not totally, but I do need certain things and certain conditions. I can’t just pick up a book while waiting on the teakettle to go off. I can’t read in a really loud place, like the living room while my husband is watching a shoot-em-up movie on the big screen with surround sound blaring. I can’t sit down and read if I have things that need to be done, errands to run, cooking or cleaning to do, etc. I guess I’m more of a Goldilocks than I thought 🙄 I like to read when it’s quiet and I’m comfortable. I have to have enough light and I have to be able to read for more than a few seconds. Ideally, I read in the evenings before bed, when it’s quiet and I can read until my eyes are tired and I’m ready to go to sleep 😀

Statistics

There was a widely bruited-about statistic reported last week, stating that 1 in 4 Americans did not read a single book last year. Clearly, we don’t fall into that category, but . . . how many of our friends do? Do you have friends/family who read as much as you do? Or are you the only person you know who has a serious reading habit?

I read this article in our local newspaper. I can’t say that I was surprised. With the advent of technology, and just how busy in general most people are, I was actually rather surprised that 3 in 4 Americans actually did read a book! Most people are either single parents, or dual-working parents, who barely have time to keep up with their lives and their kids lives. I know how lucky I am, that my situation allows me time to read and enjoy the things I like to do. I read a lot more than the average person. My sister Gail reads a lot, and my mother-in-law also reads a lot. I’m not sure that many other family members or friends read more than a handful of books a year. At least, none that I know of. I love to see people reading, and I love seeing a love of books instilled in children. We’re always really happy if we see or hear of our nieces and nephews getting read to, or learning to read when they get older.

Happy Reading, everyone!

No Name Meme

Lynne tagged me with this “meme with no name” earlier today. 🙂 Thanks Lynne!

I won’t tag anyone specifically at the end, but please feel free to snag it and play along at your blog. Be sure to leave me a note if you do, so I can come check out your answers.

ACCENT: Um, Southern, definitely. Probably a lot heavier than I think. I’ve lived here my whole life and most everyone I know has, so I don’t think we realize how strong our accent is.

I DON’T DRINK: Alcohol

CHORE I HATE: ONLY ONE? You must be kidding! I dislike dusting. I dislike scrubbing our shower. Watering the flowers and grass come late August 🙄

PETS: Beau, the wonder dog. If you want to check him out, just skip on over to my Project365 blog, I’ve only posted a gazillion photos of him so far this year 😀

ESSENTIAL ELECTRONICS: Aren’t they all? This is a long list. My computer, my Internet connection, my digital camera, our HDTV, my iPod for starters. I wouldn’t want to live without my cell phone, but I might could for a short time. How about everything electronic in my little world?!

PERFUME: I only wear it occasionally, but I love Clinique Happy. Most days, I just squirt some Bath and Body Works Cherry Blossom spray on and go!

GOLD OR SILVER: Yikes, how about both? My wedding band is gold, my watch is a mix of gold and silver, and mostly, I wear silver hoops. I like and wear both.

INSOMNIA: Occasionally, the older I get. Since we got Beau, I rarely sleep through the night because he barks all hours of the night. If I’m getting exercise regularly, and cutting out caffeine in the afternoons and evenings, I sleep fairly well. If not, then I have a trusty little bottle of Tylenol PM in the bathroom.

JOB TITLE: Domestic Engineer

MOST ADMIRED TRAIT: I don’t think I have very many that are admirable! I like that I’m organized and a good planner, maybe that counts.

KIDS: None, sadly

PHOBIA: Snakes. Heights, if it’s open (I’m fine in planes and tall buildings, unless I’m outside on a ledge or balcony or overlook or something).

RELIGION: Southern Baptist

SIBLINGS: Two older sisters, Gail and Suzanne.

TIME I WAKE UP: whenever Beau barks to go outside. Anywhere from 5 AM to 6:30 AM. Lately, we’ve been doing our best to get up and go walking around 6:15. It’s dark then, these days!

UNUSUAL TALENT/SKILL: I have no idea!!

VEGETABLE: Love or hate? I love broccoli. I hate, detest, loathe and refuse to look at a beet.

WORST HABIT: Always apologizing and saying “I’m sorry”. Being negative and pessimistic. Worrying.

X-RAYS: Dental are the only ones I have on a regular basis.

MY FAVORITE MEAL: That would change depending on my mood. I love Chinese and Japanese. I love Italian food, fresh bread with olive oil for dipping, tiramisu for dessert at my favorite local Italian place. I love seafood – everything but oysters. I eat steak, but I don’t just LOVE it and order it or buy them to grill. I love comfort foods in the winter – soups, stews, chili. Fresh homemade bread, hot out of the oven with butter slathered all over it. Anything chocolate for dessert. Yikes. I love food, can you tell?!

Book Meme…

Stole this one from Karen, at Over the Back Yard Fence, who stole it from Kelly at MyUtopia, who borrowed it…. you get the idea!

What are you reading right now? The last book in the English Garden series by Christian author Lori Wick

Do you have any idea what you’ll read when you’re done with that? Absolutely, the rest of the books that I have checked out of the library (which are listed on my sidebar). After that, I need to read two books I have borrowed from my sister, so I can return them to her 🙂

What magazines do you have in your bathroom right now? I don’t have any magazines in the bathroom. In our living room, however, I have overflowing magazine baskets. Southern Living, Taste of Home, Woman’s Day, Better Homes & Gardens, Good Housekeeping, etc

What’s the worst thing you were ever forced to read? Well, I have never been “forced” read anything. But I have read a couple of books in the last two years that I totally did NOT enjoy. One was “The Falls” by Joyce Carol Oates and the other was “Talk to the Hand” by Lynne Truss

What’s the one book you always recommend to just about everyone? Ooh, tough one. I guess I recommend books I love, like the Mitford books by Jan Karon, books by Debbie Macomber, books by Karen Kingsbury, etc. And now that I’ve finished “Marley & Me” finally, I would recommend that to anyone who loves dogs.

Admit it, the librarians at your library know you on a first name basis, don’t they? No, I don’t think they know my name at all, but I think they are starting to recognize my face 🙂

Is there a book you absolutely love, but for some reason, people never think it sounds interesting, or maybe they read it and don’t like it at all? Hmmm, nothing is coming to mind…

Do you read books while you do other things? Nope. I am easily distracted. I really prefer that it is quiet when I read. I don’t like music on, or TV and I have a hard time reading when there are other people around (hospital waiting rooms, airport lounges and on the plane, etc). I don’t even like to read in the living room if Tim is watching TV or a movie. I’ll go to our bedroom and close the door and get it as quiet as I can. The only other thing I might do if I read is drink something. I don’t multi-task when I read 🙂

When you were little, did other children tease you about your reading habits? Not that I remember, but I grew up rather solitary and alone. There weren’t a lot of other kids my age around.

What’s the last thing you stayed up half the night reading because it was so good you couldn’t put it down? Oh my, I don’t stay up late for much of anything! I’m a girl who needs my sleep and gets irritable when she’s tired and sleepy 😀 I do stay up sometimes reading books that are hard to put down, but I’d never stay up much more than an hour or so after my “normal” bedtime. I am not the kind of person to sit up till 2 or 3 in the morning, reading. Nuh uh, no way!

Indoctrination

Using a suggestion from Erin today:

When growing up did your family share your love of books? If so, did one person get you into reading? And, do you have any family-oriented memories with books and reading? (Family trips to bookstore, reading the same book as a sibling or parent, etc.)

Ok, today’s question over at Booking Through Thursday is another really good one! Unfortunately, it’s about one of those topics that is tough for me – remembering anything from my childhood! I can’t seem to remember a whole lot. But, I do have a lot of memories of reading, but they are pretty much all on my own.

I have two older sisters, but they left for college when I started kindergarten (and got married when I was 9 and then 10), so I basically grew up like an only child. So, I have no memories of reading with my sisters, or of them reading to me. I can remember my mom reading some, but what I always think of my mom is her working crossword puzzles. She did those every day. She did read some though, and I think she took me to the library some. I have vague memories of going to a library over on Northside Drive. I have always loved the library and I have always loved to read. I can remember taking my little flashlight to bed with me, and making a tent with my sheet, and staying up past my bedtime to read 🙂 I got in trouble a few times with that, but I got away with it a lot too! I mostly remember reading by myself. Oh, and I have no memories of going to a bookstore. I don’t think I actually bought a book until I was in high school or college and had a part-time job and my own money. I would occasionally get books as Christmas gifts (and I have still have a few of them, although I don’t have any of my Nancy Drew books anymore, boo-hoo).

Happy Reading! 🙂
