Goldilocks

Okay, so the other day, a friend was commenting on my monthly reading list and asked when I found the time to read. In the ensuing discussion, she described herself as a “goldilocks when it comes to reading–she needs to have everything juuuuuust right to be able to focus. This caught my attention because, first, I thought that was a charming way of describing the condition, but, two, while we’ve talked about our reading habits, this is an interesting wrinkle. I’d never really thought about it that way.

So, this is my question to you–are you a Goldilocks kind of reader?

Do you need the light just right, the background noise just so loud but not too loud, the chair just right, the distractions at a minimum?

Or can you open a book at any time and dip right in, whether it’s for twenty seconds, while waiting for the kettle to boil, or indefinitely, like while waiting interminably at the hospital–as long as the book is open in front of your nose, you’re happy to read?

Another good question today over at Booking Through Thursday! I’m afraid that I am a bit of a Goldilocks 🙂 Not totally, but I do need certain things and certain conditions. I can’t just pick up a book while waiting on the teakettle to go off. I can’t read in a really loud place, like the living room while my husband is watching a shoot-em-up movie on the big screen with surround sound blaring. I can’t sit down and read if I have things that need to be done, errands to run, cooking or cleaning to do, etc. I guess I’m more of a Goldilocks than I thought 🙄 I like to read when it’s quiet and I’m comfortable. I have to have enough light and I have to be able to read for more than a few seconds. Ideally, I read in the evenings before bed, when it’s quiet and I can read until my eyes are tired and I’m ready to go to sleep 😀

  1. Debi Said,

On this, I’m totally the opposite! If I didn’t take advantage of the 30 seconds here and there or if I didn’t pick up my book while stirring the spaghetti sauce or read during the commercial breaks of Criminal Minds, etc….well, I’d just never get any reading done. But I must say, it’s definitely NOT my favorite way to read! Someday, I’m sure I’ll get back to the days when I can sit down for an hour at a time and just read…and oh my, that will be so delightful!

  2. sandra Said,

Oh I read anywhere, no matter what level of noise, brightness or surroundings I’m in LOL

I just love books so much that I can really get into them and block out everything else around me 🙂

  3. stephanie Said,

Oh…I can pretty much read any time, any place! I guess now that I have kids, I have learned to tune out the distractions! I think if I had to have the perfect conditions to read, I’d never finish a book!

  4. Carrie (Reading to Know) Said,

I’m more of one that I thought as well although I CAN make do.

  5. Gail Said,

I think I can read pretty much anywhere! If I had to wait on conditions to be juuust right, I wouldn’t get as much read…..there are times when it’s nice to read in the quiet though. But I take books everywhere and will read in waiting rooms, planes, offices and with D watching tv!

  6. paperback writer Said,

Nope. I’m not a goldilocks reader. But sometimes, just sometimes, I catch myself wandering. Then I blame what I’m reading rather than what’s going on around me.

  7. Karen Said,

I guess I’m a Goldilocks in the sense that I have to have a good half hour or more before I’ll sit down with a book. No wonder I don’t get as much reading done as I’d like to. I don’t mind background noise and I can read just about anywhere, but prefer my living room, sitting in an overstuffed chair with my feet propped up!

  8. Heidi Said,

I guess I am not a goldilocks. I’m not sure I would have ever thought of putting it that way though!

  9. Melody Said,

I can read anywhere except in the vehicles, it makes me giddy! But no problem in the train though…hmmm….

I can’t read when there’s loud music in the background, and neither can I read when someone’s speaking on the phone loudly, or the cell phones ringing. Other than that, I think I’m ok with anything.

    Happy reading!

  10. Stacy aka Vaders Mom Said,

I’ll read anywhere. anywhere. I just don’t have the time I used to. That’s one of the drawbacks of the new job (even though I love it!!)

  11. Susanne Said,

I can read pretty much anywhere as long as there is enough light for my eyes. I always have a book close by so that if I do have a few moments I can read whatever I can.

  12. BookGal Said,

I can absolutely give up cleaning and errands for reading. I should say I’d like to but life won’t always let me.

  13. mamichelle Said,

Wow, Stacy, I’m surprised at you. How do you read so many books that way? I thought you’d be like me, pick it up, read a few sentences and get interrupted, only to go back and re-read the same sentences over again and hopefully more! hehe

I am not a Goldilocks. I pick up wherever I am and get in as much as I can before zonking out.

    Happy Friday!

  14. Shawna Said,

I’m not much of a Goldilocks except for there’s got to be enough light. I can read during commercials of my favorite TV show. I can read while I’m duirng a 3-4 minutes lull while fixing supper. I can read with the TV on Sesame Street, but it’s a little more distracting if others are talking in the room (but it can be done). Sometimes, those are the only times I have to read.
