Fantasy Football

Fantasy FootballOur fantasy football league has sadly come to an end. I hated to see it finish — we have such a good time playing every week. Congratulations go out to our friend Chris (code name: Jurisprudence What?) for coming in first, and to our friend Michael (code name: Skull Crushers) for being the runner-up. They both had a really great season! Both of their teams were pretty awesome, and they were both really hard to beat! Tim (code name: WhoDat) and our nephew Zack (code name: Bone Crushers), battled it out for third place, with Tim coming in third. I didn’t do too bad; I was pretty pleased with my results, although of course I would have rather won! I came in 5th (out of 16 teams in our league) and was the highest scoring female. My blog buddy Dawn also made it into the playoffs with me, and we were the only women who did. The men really dominated this year!

Anyway, we hated to see it come to an end, and can’t wait for next year. Next year will be the third annual Hambones fantasy football league, cool huh?! In the mean time, we’re really excited about the playoffs around here. Tim, my devoted Saints fan, is on cloud 9 that his team has made it into the playoffs, and we can’t believe they have a first round bye! We’ll be rooting for them and then looking forward to the Super Bowl!

P.S. Tim wants me to say “Geaux Saints!!!”

5-1

New Orleans Saints!! Yes, we are beyond excited in our house  Tim’s beloved Saints are now 5-1 so far this season. We are amazed, excited, and generally in a state of shock that our Saints have posted that kind of record so far. It’s awesome though! We’re just not used to it!!!

Go Saints!!!

Golf is a Contact Sport

Who would have thought that the gentleman’s game of golf could be considered a contact sport? Football, yes. Hockey, yes. But golf? It’s not supposed to be!!!

But leave it to my Tim to make it a contact sport. He was hitting balls late Friday evening and one popped back out from his net in our backyard and smacked him in the eye. He now has a really pretty purple eye to show for it. I wanted to take pictures to post, and I got him to let me take just two, and they both came out blurry. But, since he wouldn’t let me take anymore, I decided to post them anyway!

Golf can be dangerous. Very, very dangerous:

Are you Ready…

Football Season!!!Are you ready… for some football????

We definitely are. Football season is our favorite time of year. Tim has always been a huge fan and I’ve learned, through the years, to love football as well. We like to go to games, play fantasy football in our league at Hambones, but mostly, watch our teams on TV. Now that we have the new hi-def plasma TV, we are very ready for football season to begin in earnest. Granted, we had the opening game on Thursday night, but today really starts football. First up, there’s Tim’s beloved Saints at noon, then the Packers at 3 PM, then the battle of the Manning brothers tonight. We’ve got our fantasy teams ready to go and have purchased StatTracker so we can get up-to-the minute stats in real time to follow our teams. Plus, I got us some “game day” food at the grocery store on Friday afternoon, so we’re all set. It’s gonna be a great day!

Our First NFL Preseason Game

Tim and I went to our first NFL preseason game last night, the Saints vs the Colts. I had wanted to leave a couple of hours before the game, but Tim had played golf with Don, and we all went to eat a late lunch/early supper after the guys finished. By the time we got home and changed, it was much later than I wanted to leave. Tim thought we would be fine, after all, it’s just 15 or 20 minutes to the stadium from our house. WRONG.

Our little city’s highways are apparently not equipped to handle the traffic for a game like that, nor was the stadium and personnel equipped to handle that many people converging on one small space in a short time frame. The traffic on the interstate was a nightmare. People were backed up for miles on the two main exits to the stadium. Luckily, the stadium is near where I went to college and I had Tim go to a further exit, then we backtracked through some back streets and a neighborhood near my alma mater. As we neared my old stomping grounds, I said “gee, they must be having a game or event too, look at all the people”. Tim smiled patiently at me and said “no, sweetheart, these people are going to the Saints game too”. “NO! I said, the stadium is a mile or two from here!”. Wrong I was. People were parking miles away and walking in. We did the same, and before we were a few blocks from the car, the rain started. We had brought some light ponchos, but got soaked nonetheless trying to get them on. Our clothes were soaked, and the stadium seats we had brought to sit on. I had left my camera behind, as well as our umbrellas, after I reviewed a list of “prohibited” items on a local website. Apparently, not everyone read this same list.

We hiked in, and then soon realized that people were massed in two large groups at the stadium, one on the east side and one on the west side. We found out later that only TWO gates were open to handle the 60,000 people. What a nightmare. We were in a massive throng of miserable people. There were lots of reports of Security patting people down, but we didn’t see any of that. What we did see were huge piles of bottles and cans near the entrance that the Security people made people throw down. The same with umbrellas. I probably saw 150-200 umbrellas in piles strewn all over the entrance. I didn’t see any cameras confiscated, but then again, I didn’t see them confiscating backpacks and other things that the paper had said was prohibited. Anyway, it took us a long time to get in. We were some of the lucky ones, we got in before the first quarter was half over. The rest of the unlucky ones were still streaming in all the way to half time.

We found our seats, and realized some nice guys had taken them. Once we covered that we had tickets for that section and those seats, they sort of moved down. Not two full spaces, but they moved a little. Not enough room for us to set up our stadium seats. We barely squeezed in and Tim was half hanging out over the steps (he was in seat 1 on our row, I was in seat 2). We spent the entire time shifting – if he leaned forward, I had to lean backwards. If he sat back, I had to lean forwards. There wasn’t enough room for us to sit shoulder to shoulder.

It didn’t rain again, and thankfully stayed overcast and it was actually almost pleasant. We were up high enough that we got a bit of a cool breeze and it was not that hot – especially not compared to the 98º heat we endured when we went to training camp. We didn’t have great seats and we didn’t see a lot of what was going on. We had a guy who kept jumping up in front of us and we missed a bunch of the plays.

All in all, Tim said he had fun, so that’s all that counts. Me, I think I’m much happier at home on the couch, in front of our new big screen. I don’t have people sitting in my seat, sloshing beer around and blocking my view. But that’s just me and I did have a good time. Mostly, we wanted to support the team. So we did. And I’m glad we went. I asked him if he would want to go in the future and he said probably; he wants to support them. After what we endured though, and the backlash I read in today’s paper, I seriously doubt if our little city will ever host another preseason game again. It was all poorly handled and I don’t imagine the NFL or the Saints would want to risk that happening again. Which is a shame, really.

I didn’t take my camera because it was on the prohibited list. I probably could have; I saw other people with them, and a lot of other things that they said were prohibited. But, it would have gotten in the deluge when we first arrived, and I’m really glad I didn’t take it and chance getting it wet. I tried to take a few pictures with Tim’s cameraphone, but with the lights and distance, they didn’t come out that great (as I expected). I’ll post them below though, just to show them πŸ™‚

Training Camp Pictures

Well, surprisingly enough, a few of you guys commented that you wanted to see pictures from the training camp practices we attended over the weekend. I was pretty surprised! But, since you asked (and even if you hadn’t, hehehe), I thought I would post some pictures.

Let me just state this for the record – it’s hot here in July and August. I feel for these guys. The sun was broiling, it was humid, those are really big guys, and they are decked out in a lot of black apparel and shoulder pads. I know they are past hot. But, it’s good conditioning for them. Saturday was tolerable (morning, some clouds) and Sunday was downright unbearable (96º, high humidity, not a cloud in the sky). The sun was beating down Sunday afternoon, no clouds to cover the sun and it was beyond humid. We didn’t stay the entire time. That should tell you something. Tim is a die-hard fan and for him to leave before practice is over speaks volumes. It was sooo hot.

OK, recap. We went Saturday to the morning practice on the “upper field”, which is just a practice field at the local college where they are holding training camp. There’s also a small stadium at the college where they hold the other practices (including the one we went to Sunday PM). This practice field doesn’t have bleachers, so they had thrown up some temporary bleachers at the end of the practice area, so we were not on a sideline view. I didn’t get great pictures because there was always players, trainers, assistants, coaches, etc, standing around blocking my view.

If I had been with this official camera guy, I might have gotten good pictures:
Camera Guy

Then again, I am scared of heights, so I wouldn’t want to be up there with him:
Camera Rig

I got scared just watching them lift him up with that huge hydraulic machine. 😯

Sunday, we went to the afternoon practice at the stadium. I was hoping this was going to be better for taking pictures, since it was a regular field with bleachers, and a sideline view. I could not have been more wrong. It was so hot, I just wanted to drink water and Powerade (2 dollars a bottle, you can’t bring in your own drinks) and fan myself with the program. So, I didn’t get nearly as many pictures. We didn’t stay as long because it was so hot, and the main attraction, number one draft pick Reggie Bush, was not there. Bush was the second overall draft pick, behind Mario Williams, but had held out for a couple of days on his contract negotiations. The local paper had said he was supposed to be there on Sunday, so we were excited. Of course, he didn’t show up, and is supposed to be here today. I don’t think we’ll make it today though. Too hot!

OK, lots more pictures, with explanations, on the extended page. Check them out if you would like!

Golf

If you’ve read my blog before, you probably know that my better half is recently, totally and completely obsessed with golf. He started last December and has played almost non-stop since then. He has had lessons, hit golf balls in the back yard, gone to the driving range, played in scrambles, and gotten in as much “regular” golf as he can. He has been wanting me to go with him, but I have resisted thus far. Until yesterday, that is.

Tim got off work a little early and wanted to go play 18 holes. He “talked” me into going with him and riding in the golf cart. Expecting it to be like going to the driving range with him, I took along a book and my iPod, as well as my camera. Well, the iPod never came out and I read maybe 2 paragraphs in my book. The camera, however, got a good workout!

I must admit, it was a lot more fun than I had expected it to be. I’m used to sitting still, watching him hit balls from one spot. Not so on a golf course. It was pretty constant movement and activity. When we first started out, there were two carts of golfers behind us, and I was hesitant about even going. But, Tim played the first couple of holes pretty quickly, and we got a head start on the others, and from then on, we were pretty much on each hole by ourselves. Which was great – we had a lot of fun! I took a lot of pictures, learned to drive a golf cart, helped him look for his ball , drove around looking for the yardage markers, etc. Not knowing anything about golf, I had no idea you could drive the golf cart out on the fairway (well, not on some holes, par 3’s on this course), and so I had a blast, zipping around with him, looking for balls, taking him his clubs, getting water, etc. The course we went to (Caroline) is really pretty, and I really enjoyed being out there with him. There’s a lake there, and of course a lot of water and sand hazards on each hole. We encountered a bunch of geese on one hole and had to wait for them to get across the cart path. The place was really beautiful and I took a lot of scenic pictures and a ton of flower pictures (they had gorgeous daylillies on several of the holes). I may post those later this afternoon on a separate post.

We were really late getting home, so we stopped and picked up some food for supper (salad for me and burger for Tim). We watched a movie from our collection after we got home, a recent purchase of a really old movie that I like (Memphis Belle). All in all, a really good day!

M-Braves Game

We had a busy weekend, with a really full, but fun, day on Saturday. We did some stuff around here, most notably, Tim fixed the tiller that has been broken since last summer. He also cut the grass (well, the weeds, we have tons more weeds than grass) and got things cleaned up outside.

We left to go run some errands in the late afternoon, then we headed out to Trustmark Park for the M-Braves game Saturday night. I lobbied to go over to Bass Pro Shop to eat at their new restaurant (Islamadora Fish Company), but Tim wanted the “whole ballpark experience”, so we ate at the game. Hot Dogs, Chili Cheese Fries and a drink.

It was chilly when we got there, and it got colder all night. The wind was blowing constantly out of the north at 10-15mph. After the first couple of innings, I was a block of ice. I ended up borrowing an extra blanket from the very nice family sitting next to us. In addition, we had two groups of coaches/scouts or some kind of organizational people sitting in front of us, and to my right. We had GREAT seats, right behind home plate, and apparently that’s where the guys keeping stats (on Palm Pilots as well as paper), running the pitching radar guns and the big wigs sat. I saw one guy come back with hot chocolate and I asked him which concession stand he found that at (since we hadn’t found any yet, they have different concessions selling different items). He said, “I made it in the clubhouse, would you like me to go get you one?” And I was like, “Oh no, but thank you. I just wondered where you got it”. A couple of innings later, he came and brought me 2 hot chocolates from the clubhouse, which I thought was so nice of him. I think these were the guys from the other team (Huntsville Stars), but he was so thoughtful. I kept one for me and Tim and shared the other with the lady who had loaned me a blanket. Like I told the guy, he made our whole row happy! πŸ™‚

Anyway, we had great seats, and a great time. Those games are so much fun! There’s a lot going on, including a great mascot (Reggie), and fun stuff at every half inning. This was only the third home game and they had lost the first two games, and they didn’t start out well. But, then they had a big rally in the bottom of the 5th inning, and we were clapping, yelling and screaming, and waving our red tomahawks they gave us when we walked in (free from Cellular South). It was a blast! We left a little early (top of the 8th inning, had to stay for the 7th inning stretch!), and it was still 5-2. We went to the new Starbucks near the stadium in Pearl, and got drinks since we were both so cold. Grande dark roast for Tim, and Tall NonFat Decaf Vanilla Latte for me. Mmmm, good. Tim and I had a great time and hope to go back a bunch more this season.

Since this was one of the first home games, they were giving out big magnets with the entire schedule on them, so I got one and put it on the fridge. We know when all the home games are now, so everyone come and go to a game with us! They’re fun πŸ™‚

Here’s Tim at the game, holding his tomahawk… more pictures on the extended page:

Playoffs

I was so looking forward to the games this weekend, and so far, I have not been very pleased. Well, I wasn’t picking anyone in the Seattle game, but I was glad they won. Same for the Patriots/Broncos, although I was pulling for the Broncos (Tatum Bell helped me out a lot in my fantasy league). I thought it was about time that the Patriots didn’t go to a Super Bowl, and mostly, I wanted Peyton and my beloved Colts to have a chance to go and win. WELL. That fervent wish was just dashed. It was tight there at the end, and after I had given up, they got the ball back and had a chance to tie it up and go into overtime and then Vanderjagt missed that kick. I’m beyond despondent.

Off to watch “da Bears” as Suzie calls them, and I guess root for them. Tim, I think, would rather the Panthers win. I will have to watch for Suzie, since she’s at that game. I’m sure they will put the camera on her and she’ll wave to us

Tim, as expected, is now outside hitting golf balls. Again.

Looking forward to tonight – Tim is going to go pick us up some Chinese food (my favorite!) and we’re going to watch the 2 hour premiere of “24”. Can’t wait! Maybe that will make me feel better after watching my Colts lose.

Football

This weekend was tough for the football fans in our household, namely me and Tim. First, we drove down to Hattiesburg, bought some great tickets to the game (upper tier, 4th row, 50 yard line, someone’s season passes – the people next to us asked “How do you know Benny and Doris? πŸ™‚ ) and then sat through a horrendously painful game. USM lost to Tulsa, and it was not pretty. In fact, it hurt to watch, and we left before it was over. The weather was great though, and the seats and our neighboring fans were terrific, but the game itself was hard. Today proved no different. Brett and the Packers beat Tim’s beloved Saints. No, not beat them, they pounded them, pummeled them, disgraced them, and belittled them. Tough weekend to be a football fan in our little domain. And for those of you who don’t know Tim, you can just imagine what kind of mood he was in after his two favorite teams lost. We love Brett and the Packers, except when they play the Saints!

Saints Win, Saints Win!

Hip, hip, hooray, the Saints won their first game today, against the Carolina Panthers! It was a really good game, a nail-biter. We were both so happy to see them playing more consistently and acting more like a cohesive team than in times past. And, of course, it was such an emotional game and win, because of everything going on in New Orleans and the coast in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

We are also really enjoying our new DVD recorder – Tim has recorded two games to DVD in the past 24 hours, so he’s a happy camper! I think I have enough figured out so far to be able to record to VHS (which I do often) and to DVD (which I might do more of!). Hopefully. Only time will tell!

Oh, and we’re also having a ball today, checking on our fantasy football teams and watching the stats come in, and following our fantasy players in other games. It sure makes it a lot of fun to watch other games if you have particular players to pull for and root for! πŸ˜€

P.S. Well, phooey, Tim just told me that the live stats on our fantasy league is just a freebie for this weekend, and after this week, we won’t get that. Darn. I really like sitting here and watching the numbers change as we’re watching the game. I just checked, and it would be 10 bucks per player to do the live stats add-on. If it was 10 for the league, we would do it, but I don’t think we’ll be able to cough up $100 for the entire league. Oh well, it is fun while it’s working!

It Has Begun

Let football season, at least in our household, commence.

For those of you who know us personally, you know how important football season is to Tim, now by virtue of proximity, to me. Actually, in the 10 years that we have been together, I have actually come to really love and enjoy football. Of course, I’m not in the same stratosphere that Tim is, but still, I am not a football widow; I’m a willing participant.

I don’t, however, get as excited about preseason as Tim does. The Saints training camp started yesterday, so it has all begun for Tim. He pulled out an old Saints tape last night and started watching old games. This is something he does every year, as he gets back into his football mindset. I think he’s a great armchair quarterback/coach. From the amount of tapes he watches in preseason, as well as repeatedly during the week of the actual season, he ought to be! haha, just kidding sweetheart πŸ˜€

Tim is actually a little behind schedule this year. He normally starts watching his tapes earlier in the summer, usually a couple of weeks or more before the preseason starts. He’s been busier at work and working on Hambones more at night this year, and he’s behind schedule. Poor baby. He has been reading all of his football magazines though. We buy all of those in early June, and he devours them in the weeks leading up to preseason.

Anyway – it has begun. Let football season commence. Hip-hip hoorah!
