Spam & Recipes

But not recipes for Spam!

A couple of random thoughts this morning:

1. I don’t understand people who leave spam on my little blog. I mean, it’s not a high traffic blog, nor does it have anything controversial or even overtly interesting on it. I’m SO grateful for Akismet though – the spam filter I installed a while back to catch all of this nasty spam. I’m constantly amazed and disgusted at the kinds of spam that Akismet catches. Ugh. At least it doesn’t get out there, but I hate seeing it all on my moderation page.

2. I’ve been trying to get back into a cooking groove. For a while now, I’ve just been making things that are easy, or things that I’ve made many times before. I’m making a concerted effort to try new things. Most of them have been winners, although some have been better than others. All of these are new to me, and all are from places online. I have tried to give credit from the website where I found the recipe, but sometimes I don’t always write it down or print it out. I have just entered several recipes on our family website, in the Recipes section. Here’s a sampling of them:

Sausage Calzones, with homemade dough – here

Pizza Pot Pie – here

Butter Honey Wheat Bread – here

Homemade Taco Sauce (here), which I used in this Skillet Taco recipe

I am going to try a new recipe today for a homemade spaghetti sauce. I’m on a kick lately to reduce sodium and cut down on the processed food I buy and use. So many additives in the canned stuff, packet mixes, etc, as well as that nasty high fructose corn syrup. I hope it turns out ok, because I sure do like using jarred spaghetti sauce, it’s so easy!

  1. heidi @ ggip Said,

Good luck with your cooking! I do used some processed foods (cream of soups, cake mixes, etc) I do appreciate cooking with real food. I think this new awareness will be good for people.

  2. Maria Said,

I’ve always used the jarred spaghetti sauce and would like to make my own. Let us know if you find a great recipe.

I’ll have to check out the other recipes you’ve tried. I can’t wait for cooler weather to cook soups and such again. This heat is horrid here. And with no a/c in our house, I dread turning on the oven and stove. My husband cooked ribs twice in the last three days (at 350 for 2 hours) and I think the house is still recovering. LOL

Glad to see you updating the blog. I updated mine too. Got a few more ideas for posts. Take care!

  3. Kimmy Said,

The pizza pot pie sounds great!

I always like to find new recipes. It’s easy to get into a rut making the same things over and over. I don’t like to use processed food either. I do so sparingly.

Looking forward to the cooler weather so I can really get back into the groove of cooking/baking. This summer has been horrid!

  4. Dianne Said,

I don’t get the spam thing either. I know it’s beyond just individuals with time on their hands; people have created programs to do nothing but suck up addresses and post spam. Yuck!

I need to make some spaghetti sauce too. Mike is so picky, I can’t use garlic like I like it. But it’s so much better making it myself than buying the canned stuff. I will start with canned tomatoes, unless I get some at the farmer’s market. Ours were not too productive this year and I forgot to plant plum tomatoes.

We picked up 1/2 peck each pears and apples on our trip, so I need to figure out something to do with them as well. That’s a lot of fruit! I’m thinking apple butter, etc.

  5. Laura Said,

Oh I love your recipes…. I so wish I had more time to cook. Recipes have to be SUPER easy for me to even attempt, and even then I usually file under “not worth it”.
I don’t have a stand mixer (I don’t even have a food processor) and I have no idea what a “dough hook” is, lol.
For me, spaghetti WITH the jarred stuff is “cooking”! And even that’s too much for me most nights.
    🙂

  6. Lauren@BaseballsandBows Said,

Thanks for sharing the recipes! The calzones look WONDERFUL!

  7. mamichelle Said,

hehe, I was a little worried when I saw spam and recipes. I don’t understand why anyone would leave spam either. I think it’s only happened to me once. Weird! Do they have nothing better to do?!

Your recipes sound great! I’ve been cooking more too….which means I’ve been eating more – NOT good since I have a wedding to go to Labor Day weekend with my skinny cousins. Ugh….

  8. Dawn Said,

I have a pact with myself to try at least one new recipe a week. Sometimes I get up to 2 or 3! I have so many draft recipes waiting in the wings on my recipe blog that this is great motivation to get them tried & make a decision! I am all about the anti-clutter lately.

  9. Karen Said,

I get so much spam from companies and foreign countries. But, since blogger put in a new spam control, not as much.
