Magazines

I have a love/hate relationships with magazines. I love to subscribe to them, love to get them in my mailbox, love to flip through them when I first get them. But then…. I don’t read through them completely, and so I end up putting them in a magazine rack in my den. You know, to read more thoroughly later on. First I had one magazine holder, then I had to get a second one. So, you can imagine how many magazines I have sitting around here. Some of them go back two years, gasp! 🙂

I’ve found through the years that as I’ve aged, I’ve changed the kind of magazines I read. I guess we get to be more like our mothers the older we get!

I don’t tend to pay for most of the magazine subscriptions that I have, so I guess that is good. I do pay for one or two, but the majority of them I get through point programs that I do online. I get several from MyCokeRewards (since Tim drinks so much Coke Zero, we have a lot of codes from Coke Zero 2 liter bottles and cases)! I also get one of Tim’s golf magazines through e-rewards.

Here’s some of the ones that I have gotten in the last year, or are currently getting. Several of them are running out and I’m debating about renewing the subscription. I think I’m going to let Taste of Home go, although I do like it, but I’m trying to cook with less processed food products and also low-sodium, and that magazine is not strong in those areas.

Some of the magazines I get are:

Southern Living (Amazon deal)
Everyday Food (points)
Taste of Home (letting expire)
Good Housekeeping (points)
Redbook (points)
Better Homes & Garden (points)
Ladies Home Journal (points)
Everyday with Rachael Ray ($10 sub, but letting expire)

So, how about you… do you read magazines? Do you buy them at the store or subscribe? Do you read them and toss or recycle them quickly, or let them pile up? What’s your favorite magazine? Leave me a comment and let me know!

  1. Laura Said,

I love magazines too! I buy People Style and InStyle every month at the store, and the rest come to my mailbox. InStyle is my absolute favorite followed closely by ESPN Magazine (Kyle and I fight over who gets to read that one first). I also get either LHJ or BH&G plus Parents but I don’t care for any of those as much. They just serve to make me feel bad about my life or worried, and that’s definitely not something I need.

With most magazines, I feel like the articles are just recycled, so I get tired of almost every magazine after about a year.

I always throw them away pretty quickly; don’t have room for them to pile up!

Even more than magazines, I LOVE catalogs! I will keep those and look through them over and over again.

  2. cam Said,

I used to get them, but I finally realized they were just clutter in my brain–I could not let one go unless I’d read every article, so I always had stacks of them sitting around, waiting till I had time to go through them like I felt I should. Ugh! I finally let go of that and stopped buying any magazine. I have never missed it. 🙂 Now I just look for blogs/online articles on topics that interest me, and I only read what I really want to read.

  3. Deanna Said,

I receive the Mississippi magazine because it was given to me as a gift subscription from a friend. The only magazines that I actually buy a subscription to are Popular Mechanics and Popular Science for the boys. Other than that, I usually read any magazines I want to read at the library.

  4. Lauren@BaseballsandBows Said,

When my kids were babies, I read magazines a lot because I could read them in short periods when I have time. Now that I can read for longer stretches, I prefer books. I do, however, get Southern Living and recently subscribed to Runner’s World. I also get Taste of Home, but like you, I may let that one go because I can’t use a lot of the recipes.

  5. Sandra Said,

I love magazines too, I get so giddy when I pick up a new one to read.

  6. mamichelle Said,

I get Paper Crafts Magazine, BHG Scrapbooks, Etc. and Redbook. I got a really good deal on SB, Etc. and Redbook. I think they were both around $20 for 5 yrs. We also get Yankee Magazine which i love. It’s so pretty!

I love getting them but then wonder what to do when I’m done. I pass along my Redbook to a friend but my paper crafting ones I flag and think I’ll use an idea later. Do I EVER?!! Nope. They’re sitting in a basket in my room. I occasionally go through and toss though.

I never buy them at the store.

  7. Dawn Said,

Oh do I love my magazines too!! I get Everyday with Rachael Ray, Real Simple, Redbook, Ladies Home Journal, Good Housekeeping, Better Homes & Gardens, and Taste of Home-Healthy Cooking. If we lived closer, I would share mine with you! I am pretty good about staying on top of mine. I have all the current issues on my coffee table for casual browsing. When a new issue comes, the old one goes into the basket under my end table. That is my cue to flip through it one last time, enter any interesting recipes onto my recipe blog as drafts, remove anything I want to save for future reference, and then right into my recycling basket!

  8. Karen Said,

I love magazines! I used to subscribe to several, but — like you — I found them piling up, so I let all of my subscriptions lapse except for Good Housekeeping. Also, two of my favorites went out of print — Mary E’s Home Companion and Cottage Living. I find myself picking up new ones at the store now, mostly sewing and knitting magazines. I have some cards in my pocketbook right now, to send in for subscriptions. Yes, I’m a magazine junkie.

  9. Desert Songbird Said,

We don’t have time to read magazines fully, but my husband and son subscribe to Popular Science and National Geographic. I subscribe to Sports Illustrated. 🙂

  10. Gail Said,

I have subscriptions to 3, Southern Living, Better Homes and Gardens and Good Housekeeping and they are stacked up! I realized I don’t look at them soon enough to take advantage of the coupons in them so am trying to attack the stacks again to see if I can whittle down. I decided not to get the Rachel Ray 10 dollar deal that came in the mail 🙂
Maybe if I can get these under control I can pick up something else.
