Washing Dishes is Fun Again & a QOTD

Or at least, washing dishes is fun for a few days, LOL!

The sprayer on my kitchen sink broke in early December, and I told Tim we should just wait till after Christmas to replace it. That led to early February, but it all worked out really well for me. We looked at Lowe’s and didn’t see just a replacement sprayer (although Tim told me later he did find one), so we decided to get a whole new faucet set. My sink and faucet are original to the house, so they are over 15 years old. One of us said something to the effect of “it sure would be a shame to put a nice, shiny new faucet on that old, scratched up, rusted sink”. I can’t remember who said that at the moment 😀 Anyway, I picked out a new sink too. I really like being able to pick out fixtures and lighting and stuff to replace what we have here. Everything put in by the builder was the lowest level possible, so now I have a nicer sink, two inches deeper, and a nicer faucet that doesn’t leak, with a sprayer that works. Ah, washing dishes is fun again!

Here’s the old one:

And the nice shiny new one:

So, that leads to an unusual Question of the Day: Do you have a good cleaner for stainless steel? Or any tricks to keeping my new sink as clean and shiny and protected for as long as possible? I have always used BarKeeper’s Friend (a powder, sort of like Comet) or SoftScrub on my sink, but I’m wondering if I should be using something else. Something for stainless or something special for sinks. It sure has a lot of water spots all the time!

Leave me a comment and let me know if you have any tips or suggestions on keeping a stainless steel sink clean. And have a great day!

  1. Lynne Said,

The new sink and faucet look great. I love having a nice deep sink.

As for cleaning, I’ve use BarKeeper’s Friend and like it, also BonAmi cleanser. But I found the best thing is to dry the sink completely EVERY time you use it. That will keep it from getting water spots.

Oh, I also heard that wiping it down with alcohol (the rubbing kind, not the drinking kind!) works.

I have a porcelain sink and always, ALWAYS, dry it when I’m finished.

  2. Gail Said,

It looks great! I think that barkeeper’s friend would be good to use, vinegar might work too b/c it works for lots of things. I think Lynne is right about drying it out, they do show spots. I think I read too that you can use like olive oil to make it shine!

  3. mamichelle Said,

I can’t remember the manufacturer, but I use a tub of stainless wipes. I think it begins with a C. They also make cooktop wipes which I also use.

    Nice new sink & faucet!

  4. Dianne Said,

Hm. My eyes must be bad. Did you say “washing dishes is fun?” Thought so! Just kidding . . . it’s not that bad. Although I don’t have a dishwasher so i do quite a few of them!!

We got a new faucet a few months ago – Moen i think. I convinced Mike I needed a higher one and I love it. I did not get a new sink though. Will hold out for new kitchen instead . . .

I use an SOS pad on mind every few nights. Maybe that’s not good though; I’ll have to check back and see what the others say. Yours looks nice though.

  5. Karen Said,

I use Soft Scrub or an SOS pad. I think the SOS pad really makes it shine, and I agree that drying it out completely keeps the water spots away. I thought your QOTD was going to be, do you like handwashing dishes? When it was just Dan and me, and even through baby #1, I always handwashed the dishes. I enjoyed doing it and knowing that they were done, not sitting dirty in the dishwasher. But you didn’t ask. So forget that last part.

    🙂

  6. annie Said,

I buy mr clean and mix it in a spray bottle with water… i spray out my sink and around the sink and dry it with a towel. I agree that keeping it dry makes it look clean. I get a little crazy about it though and don’t want anyone to get the sink wet which is not reasonable with six people here 🙂 … but a dry sink is a clean sink.

  7. Sandra Said,

Love your new shiny sink 🙂

I just use SOS pads to keep mine clean, it really does make it shiny and it doesn’t scratch either.

  8. Meredith Said,

Very nice! I have a porcelain sink so not much help here though I do LOVE Barkeeper’s Friend!

I think drying it is the best thing to do. And I recently bought a stainless steel spray cleaner for the spots on our stainless coffee maker but I don’t think it works very well.

  9. Desert Songbird Said,

I have no clues as I don’t have a stainless steel sink. I did, however, recently get a new faucet and sprayer, and I was told to clean only with a damp soft cloth and glass cleaner.

  10. Lauren@Baseballs&Bows Said,

It looks great! My sink is white, so I have no tips for the stainless. Sorry!

  11. JEN Said,

There is a cleaner at Lowes i cant remember the name of it. But someone will know what it is. I dont have stainless anymore….sorry.

  12. Heidi @ GGIP Said,

I would be so excited too. One of the first project we did was to replace our kitchen sink. There was a SINGLE BOWL shallow sink in this big kitchen and it was insane. We got a deep double bowl sink and I got ceramic, which may or may not have been a good choice. It washes up good with soft scrub with bleach, but I’m not sure about stainless steel.

    Have fun!

  13. DawnK Said,

I got a new faucet in the last year or so, too. My other one just died. I didn’t get a new sink with it, though! LOL! My moms’ theory for keeping a stainless steel sink looking nice is to always dry it off, when it’s been wet. She is very religious about doing this, too! I don’t really know what she uses to clean it with, though. I’d have to ask.
