I posted a few pictures I had taken in our yard yesterday, but I didn’t post one because I have no idea what this is! I was hoping someone could help me out.
We have a small line of trees behind our fence, in our extra back yard. Tim hits golf balls there, and Beau runs around having a blast smelling all the trees and shrubs. There’s a tree that has been dropping these huge green ball things the last couple of weeks. I have absolutely no idea what they are. If you do, please drop me a comment and let me know! Thanks 🙂
Anyone know what this is?
It’s a lazy Sunday afternoon. I have tons of free time to goof off on the computer while I wait on my husband and my laundry.
It’s Osage Orange.

I just asked my mom and she concurs…Osage Orange.
Thanks Stacy and Claire – that’s exactly what it is! I looked it up and read more about it, and that definitely fits what we have back there. And we do have a lot of squirrels too, and they seem to like these things.
Thanks so much for your help 🙂
I think I’ve actually seen one of those before, but I’m not sure where or when. Thanks Stacy and Claire for the info!
I’m impressed with the books you’ve read…that’s more than one a week! I’m lucky if I get to read one a semester. I dont’ know if this is the same story, but I’ve seen 1776 the musical (for extra credit in AP US History for 11th grade, definitely wouldn’t have picked it on my own) but it’s pretty funny.
Interesting. I have never seen anything like that.
The look like “hedge apples” to me…or at least, that’s what we’ve always called them here 🙂
Hi Stacey – I’m new to your site. You commented on one of my menu plans and I decided to browse your site too. Anyway, thanks for posting this picture…We have lots of these “fruits” in our yard and I always wondered what they were. Now I know. Great info!!!
I haven’t seen one of those here. Looks very interesting.
I’ve learned something new today. Thanks.
I’ve also heard them called horse apples. I had heard or read that they keep spiders away. When we were up in MN they actually sold these in one of the grocery stores saying they kept spiders away. Who knows??
[…] I know what these are, because I posted about them last year on my regular blog, here. It was much later in the year, in November, when they were falling last year. I bet it’s because we’ve had this horrible drought. Anyway, they’re technically called “osage orange”, but commonly referred to as “horse apples”. You should hear one come crashing down, it’s loud! I was sitting out back with Beau, reading a book, a couple of days ago and when one dropped, it scared both of us! There’s over a dozen on the ground back there.
