Odds N Ends

No big news from this little corner of the blogosphere, just a few odds n ends 🙂

  • FREE BOOK: I received my free book from Karen yesterday, via Amazon. Wow, how I love to get presents in the mail, especially right before my birthday. For those of you who were asking, I asked for and received the second book in the Abram’s Daughters series by Beverly Lewis. It’s called The Betrayal, and I’m so looking forward to reading these books. Once I complete my Fall Challenge reading list, I hope to get started on these books. I can’t wait! Thanks again Karen 😀
  • TV: We watched NCIS and The Unit last night, two of our favorite shows, in HD. Geesh, what a difference that makes – it is so clear and vibrant and the image is just totally impressive. I love to watch whatever we can in HD. I had to tape Dancing with the Stars, and I hope to find time to watch the tape this afternoon before the results show tonight. Also up tonight is Lost – I hope they give us more info, but I have a feeling this week’s show will just be a continuation of last week’s. Last week they only showed Jack, Kate and Sawyer, and I feel like they’re going to show the other survivors in the same time frame, probably looking for them and trying to figure out what happened to them. Yawn. I want action and I want answers!
  • BAKING: I made some new cookies yesterday, a seasonal recipe, but it wasn’t a huge success. Not a total failure, but not a recipe I would ever make again. They are “Iced Pumpkin Cookies” and I got the recipe here. I halved everything, but I think I messed up on a couple of them and forgot and added double (I know I did it on the vanilla in the batter). The cookies themselves are pretty good, but we didn’t like the icing. We’re not drinkers and the rum extract flavor is really strong. Or else, I could have messed up there again and used the full amount and not half for the half batch I was baking. Either way, the icing didn’t do right. Maybe I iced them when they were still warm or maybe something from my pantry was old. Whatever, they were not winners in my book, so I won’t be posting the recipe here or at our main website (for recipes, click here).
  • If you’re looking for something to bake, a better choice would probably be the French Toast Loaf that my sister Gail made and posted about here. It looks yummy! I’ve got another recipe for more cookies that I’m going to try soon, so maybe the next batch/kind will be better 🙂 In the mean time, I’ve got plenty of candy corn to eat, hehehe!
  • BREAD: I’m still making homemade bread on Wednesdays and Thursdays. I feed the starter today, mix up the dough tonight to rise, and make the loaves tomorrow and we’ll have fresh bread, hot out of the oven, with supper on Thursday night. This is a recipe (and the starter) that I got from my sister Gail. We love this stuff, and I’ve discovered something new lately – I love using my Kitchenaid mixer to mix up the dough. I have been mixing it all by hand for several months, then decided to try using the machine. Wow, what a difference that makes! I won’t go back to doing it by hand, that’s for sure!
  • OK, how about another Question of the Day… yesterday, I asked if you liked Candy Corn or if you had bought any Halloween candy. Today’s question is along the same lines – do you decorate for Halloween or fall? On any level, inside or out. It could be pumpkins and mums outside, carving pumpkins, decorating with fall colors inside your house or apt, etc. Leave a comment and let me know 🙂
  • Have a great day everyone!

    1. Laura Said,

Your baking adventures sound so great! Yummy. I just haven’t had any energy lately. My husband has been making us dinner since I got back. 🙂 I do decorate a little bit for fall. This week we put up orange lights in our window, hung up our witch and skeleton outside, and put a Halloween sign in the window. Inside, I burn fall-scented tarts (I consider that decorating!) and I put fall leaves on the table. So far that’s all we do!

    2. Laura Said,

Oh, and I did buy a few pumpkins this year – little tiny ones and gourds for the tables inside, and two bigger ones. We haven’t ever carved pumpkins so I might just set them outside on Halloween. Not sure what else I could do with them! 🙂

    3. Dawn Said,

Not so much for fall. I use to, but I’ve asked for some hay bales and still waiting on them. I usually put out some hay bales with pumpins and mums around them. Now I can’t wait until you ask that question for Christmas…..

    4. Dianne Said,

Wow, you’re making me tired – or possibly that’s just cuz i’ve been at work since 5:30 this am. Anyways happy birthday; mine is Saturday. I love fall but haven’t done much decorating this year beyond a few placemats and table runners. I just noticed I still had my 4th of July door thingy up – yikes! I’ll buy Halloween candy cuz i get a kick out of the cute kids coming by. One year I dressed up like my dog (makeup to look look like a Boston Terrier); it was a hoot seeing the kids’ faces! hafe a good one!

    5. Gail Said,

Well you know I do some decorating, b/c I’ve already sent you my pictures of what I’ve done so far! Still got a couple other things to do.
I’ve got to feed my starte too but I might throw my extra cup out this week since I still have so much bread here and in the freezer!

    6. Stacy Said,

No decorating here. But, I am buying a costume to wear to the Haunted Backyard this year. That’s a first for me!!

    7. Cam Said,

I always put a fall wreath on the door (in fact I need to make that today!), and I usually buy a pumpkin for the front porch.

    8. Claire Said,

The only decoration I do is a “wreath” on my door with fall colored flowers/leaves in it.
