The Food

We have tried some new foods on this trip. As Tim loves to say “I’ll try anything once. If I don’t like it, I won’t eat it again!” So, in the spirit of that, we tried several new things and places while on our trip. So far….

We went on Thursday night (our first night in town), with Kirk and Nichole to an Afghan restaurant in Arlington. It is called Moby’s and is a kebob place. I tried the lamb kebob platter and Tim had – of course – the chicken kebob platter. It was really good and reminded me a lot of Greek. We started off with some pita bread and two condiments – one a yogurt based dip that tasted a lot like tzatziki, which I love. The other was a small container of diced tomatoes and cucumbers, with some great spices. To my great surprise, the tomato/cucumber one was delicious and I actually ate it! No worse than salsa, after all. 🙂 Then, we got our platters – which had the meat kebobs, a lettuce based salad on the side, more pita bread, and some jasmine rice with saffron on the side. All of it very tasty!

We left the Afghan place and walked around, ending up at The Cheesecake Factory, for dessert. The Cheesecake Factory has been on my list for a while, of places I wanted to try in larger cities that we visit (also on my list is The Melting Pot and a PF Changs). I had wanted to go in Atlanta, but somehow we ended up at ESPN Zone (I wonder how that happened TIM!). Anyway, we went for dessert and it was delicious. I had the white chocolate raspberry truffle cheesecake and Tim had the Snickers cheesecake. Oh my, so delicious!

Friday night, we did the unthinkable and ordered a pizza delivered to our hotel. It was really very good though, a Chicago deep dish place called Armands. That worked out to be a good meal, because we heated up the leftovers in the little microwave in our room to grab a quick bite for lunch before we left on the White House tour.

On Saturday night, we finished up at the Smithsonians in town, then road the Metro back to our Courthouse stop in Arlington. Having just walked around with Kirk and Nichole on Thursday night, we thought it would be easy to find a place to eat. But we were both tired and couldn’t decide, so we started walking. By the time we got down to the NEXT Metro station, all on foot, we realized we had walked a long way and were VERY hungry and tired. So, we stopped at a place right across from the Clarendon metro station, that Kirk and Nichole had told us about on Thursday night, called Hard Times Café. They told us that this place had great chili. So we stopped and got food there. We both ordered chili dogs with fries. Tim ordered his with the Terlingua chili and I got Texas style chili. We both ordered the house root beer on draft and it was SO good!

Tonight (Sunday night), we went to eat Thai with Kirk. Nichole was not feeling well, and stayed at their apartment to rest. Kirk came and picked us up at the Archives and drove us to Pentagon City, to a little mixed urban place right by their apartment complex. We’ve seen these mixed areas in the area near our hotel – a little place with retail shops on the street level, stores and restaurants, and then above it, there are apartments and condos. In the middle, or common area, there are fountains, benches, trees, shrubs, flowers or something along those lines. Great atmosphere and very appealing to me. I love how they seem like little tiny neighborhoods, and that they seem like little oases in the big city. I love the concept.

Anyway, we went to a place called Thaiphoon. We started off with an appetizer of Crispy Tofu with a sweet and sour dipping sauce sprinkled with crushed peanuts. Good stuff. 🙂 Then, Tim ordered Ka Pow, a spicy chicken dish with rice, and I ordered Shrimp Pad Thai. Kirk ordered Drunken Noodles, which he had said he had before and liked. I have always wanted to try Pad Thai and now that I have, I can say “I knew I was right, I knew I would love it!!” 🙂 It was delicious and I was sort of upset that I got full and couldn’t finish every bite. It was soooo good!!

After we left the restaurant, Kirk drove us out to see the memorials at night. Again, I tried to take pictures, but my camera does NOT do well at night, so the pics didn’t come out good. But at least we got to see the Jefferson, Lincoln and Washington Memorials lit up at night, they are so beautiful and striking and grand at night, white shining beacons in the night. 🙂
