QOTD: Bagged Lettuce

I was surfing around a day or so ago (or maybe checking Twitter, I honestly can’t remember!), and I saw a link to this article, about washing bagged lettuce.

I normally watch The Today Show, so I didn’t see this segment on The Early Show. But, I must admit, I don’t always rewash those bags of pre-washed lettuce. I might think twice now! I try to buy heads of lettuce, or heads of romaine more precisely, and then wash them myself, run them through the salad spinner, and store in a gallon ziploc bag in my produce drawer. I have been buying some of those big plastic tubs of organic lettuce at either my grocery or at Fresh Market (our favorite spot to stop after church on Sunday and pick up food for lunch). I tend to not wash those either, but just pick out the lettuce and make a salad or whatever.

So, how about you… do you wash those pre-washed bags or tubs of lettuce again? Or do you not buy those and just buy heads of lettuce that you do wash yourself? Vote in the poll and let me know!

  1. Dianne Said,

Like you, I rarely buy bagged lettuce, but when I do, it’s usually because I’m in a hurry and so of course, I don’t wash it! I much prefer leaf lettuce, washed and stored in my salad spinner (I clean it, then tear it into bite sized pieces and store in the spinner in the fridge). I am a tentative fan of the bagged spinach though – because the alternative bunched stuff is often so filthy.

  2. cam Said,

I rarely buy pre-bagged lettuce (but I do buy pre-bagged spinach for salad), but when I do, YES, I wash it, no matter what they say about it being washed! I will never trust that whoever (or whatever) washed it or handled it would do it like I would do it, or would have clean hands, or whatever. There are too many ecoli (and etc.) outbreaks to take that kind of chance. And it only takes a minute to put it in a colander and wash it, or in the spinner to wash & spin it.
With lettuce, I prefer to buy iceberg and cut it, then wash it. Otherwise, I buy bagged spinach and WASH it. lol!

  3. Deanna Said,

I definitely wash. I hate to say I don’t trust them, BUT I don’t trust them.

  4. Heidi @ ggip Said,

I have started buying heads of lettuce again. Not only might those bagged ones be unsanitary, but I often am disappointed that they are already getting brown before the expire date.

  5. mamichelle Said,

Are you telling me I should?! I love grabbing a quick handful or two and mixing it with my iceburg lettuce (yes, I do wash that).

I made a nice salad today with pecans, craisins, bleu cheese, celery and pears. It was from a bag with mixed spinach and field greens. I put Marzetti’s Honey Vinegarette on it. YUMMO!

  6. Gail Said,

I just saw another story on this very thing this week! It said to always always wash bagged stuff!
I rarely buy bagged lettuce, usually it’s spinach if I do and I don’t always wash it. Guess I’ll have to start.
