QOTD – Donors

I read online over the weekend, that in addition to Saturday being Valentine’s Day, that it was also National Donor’s Day. Apparently, this was started in 1998, but I think it might have been the first time I’ve heard of this holiday. I imagine it’s hard to get more press than Valentine’s Day, with its flowers and candy 🙂

Anyway, I thought this would be a good Question of the Day. I’m not a blood donor (I have a serious needle aversion), but I am an organ donor. And I have been for many years. I don’t know when I’m going to die or how, but when I do go, I hope that I have something or some part that would help someone else live a better life. I’ve told my family that they can have any and every part of me that they can use. If there’s not enough left to bury, they can just cremate me. After all, I’ll already be home in heaven, so it won’t matter much to me.

So, how about you? Are you a blood donor or an organ donor? Vote in the poll or leave me a comment and let me know what you think. Hope you have a great day!

P.S. Today is my sister Gail’s birthday! Not a very cheery post today from me on her birthday, so hop on over to her blog and wish her a Happy Birthday 😀

Unfortunately, I could never be a blood donor. I am absolutely terrified of needles!

I should be a organ donor though. I need to change that. You are right, I won’t need them when I’m gone.

  2. mamichelle Said,

Well, I answered Yes to both, however, the blood donating was in the past. I gave four times and passed out all four. They don’t take me any more. I passed out AFTER giving so it wasn’t just me being chicken. So a gallon is my limit.

I am an organ donor and I want to be creamated after that. I want my ashes to be spread at the beach.

    Great question, Stace!!

  3. Desert Songbird Said,

I’ve never been able to donate blood; I have a blood disorder. I’m signed up to donate organs, but of course, they won’t be using my heart or lungs, sadly. I’m not sure if any of my other organs would be usable given my condition and its unknown cause, but I figure, salve what you want and can use ‘cuz I won’t need them where I’m going!

  4. cam Said,

Both Philip and I are organ donors. Philip donates blood (but hasn’t in a while), but I don’t.

  5. Gail Said,

I now know one of the things I should have had y’all help me with last week! It’s not holding my info for comments on your blog! No biggie I guess but maybe your great mind will remember next time I’m there.

And AWWW, thanks for the birthday shout out on your blog! Very sweet to do. Now if it would only not rain here today, I’d be a happy camper. It doesn’t look like it’s quitting though.

  6. JEN Said,

You know I became an organ donor 10 years ago. It is on my drivers license. I’m also a bone marrow donor…i have never given anyone my bone marrow but have been tested to see if I can help someone. Its very easy..swab of the cheek and that is it. A friend of mine had leukemia a year ago and we all went down to get tested…a few months later our dear friend was healed with a match and she lives today..cancer free…another friend of ours uncle is very sick and needs a match….he is still searching. But to know I could help God save a life….what a remarkable miracle that could be.

  7. Amy Said,

I wish I could donate blood, but my veins are so tiny and roll that it is impossible to draw blood from me. I am a donor though when they can get anything out of me and I hope to donate my organs someday when that time comes.

    Great discussion!

  8. Karen Said,

I’ve been a blood donor for a few years. They love my blood, since I’m a universal donor. It’s nice to be loved:)

  9. Maria Said,

I am an organ donor. As you know, I was tested to be a living donor for my sister’s kidney but wasn’t a match. We are still praying for that situation.

I should check if I can be a blood donor. Thanks for the topic!

  10. Jane Said,

I enjoyed visiting your blog. I am an organ donor but can’t donate blood because of thyroid condition.
I think it is important to be a donor. SO many people are helped.

I checked out your reading list. We have VERY similar tastes!! I hope you will visit me again!!

  11. Heidi @ GGIP Said,

What a great question. I had never heard of that holiday either. I am an organ donor. I won’t need them! I do not donate blood at this time because although I don’t test it, I feel borderline anemic and like I need all my blood to function. My husband donates blood regularly. Blood donations are very needed!

  12. Lynnet Said,

I used to donate blood all the time, but after having children, my iron has been too low for them to accept. I was thrilled when my 16 yr. old (who recently got his driver’s license) indicated on there that he wanted to be an organ donor!

  13. Lauren@Baseballs&Bows Said,

I vote other. I am an organ donor, and I have been a blood donor in the past. Unfortunately, my blood pressure is very low, and last time I passed out while giving blood. My husband was with me, and it freaked him out. He doesn’t want me to give again!

  14. Sandra Said,

I’m an organ donor, never been a blood donor though I think I really should look into it.

  15. Susanne Said,

I’ve talked to family about my wishes to be an organ donor but a blood donor I don’t do. Simply for the fact that I can’t make it their during their office hours.

  16. Desert Songbird Said,

    Got something for you here:

    Sixth of the Sixth

  17. YellowRose Said,
