Well, I got lucky again this afternoon. Like I did the day I took this picture. 🙂

I was sitting down in the den to read the newspaper and check out Oprah (yeah, I know, it’s a tough life, bon bons and all!) and I saw a squirrel on the deck railing. He looked like the same squirrel who had come here before that I took pictures of. He has a sort of notch in his right ear, like he got hurt or bitten or something. I saw him eyeballing the bird feeder from the deck, but he kept jumping below the feeder (as he did before), and eating seeds and hulls from the ground. Just to be sure, I went and grabbed my camera and snuck back over by the window, in case he did something photo-worthy.

Now, for those of you who don’t know, NO, we do NOT have a pet squirrel. No, we don’t feed this squirrel. I promise I’ve just been really lucky and have been in the right place at the right time with my camera. The other day, when he jumped on the windowsill, I was astounded, because I have lived here 12 years and never, ever seen a squirrel on any of the window sills.

That said – he tried this afternoon to get on the squirrel-proof bird feeder. Apparently, it’s not squirrel proof if you’re a really, really smart squirrel. Check it out:

And, then he twisted around and went at it from more of an upside-down position! 🙂

Upside Down

  1. Wendy Said,

I saw a squirrle do the exact same thing on that same feeder we have. We also have ours on a shepherds hook. Some one told me to put oil on the shepherds hook and they can’t hold on. I haven’t tried it yet.

  2. Gail Said,

Like I said, you have to get the kind of squirrel proof one sort of like mine 🙂
And squirrels have hung upside down and come at mine from all angles too….but mine closes when they get on it because of their weight. Their weight pulls the bar down and they can’t get the seed when the bar comes down and shuts the opening. Before I had this one, I saw squirrels do some pretty weird things to get seed out of a feeder!

  3. Wendy Said,

Stacy – isn’t that the one you have. It’s the one we have and they manage not to hang on the pole (like in the picture) so their weight isn’t on it and munch away.

  4. Stacy Said,

It was labeled a squirrel proof feeder, and it does slide down if you put any kind of weight on it at all. I have a fun time filling it up, because I press too hard and am always slamming down the bar 🙂

Everyone’s missing the point of this blog post – I am very proud of my capturing this squirrel doing these things with my camera. Not that he’s doing them, just that I’m able to see him the one time he does it, sneak over and get my camera, then sneak back without scaring him off, and getting the shot in the split second he does these things. Wah. 😥

  5. Gail Said,

I guess it’s because……….I don’t like squirrels is why I commented! Sorry……ok, good pics, if you like squirrels! 😆

  6. Stacy Said,

That’s ok, I didn’t much like squirrels before either. But this one has been coming here so much, I recognize him from his ear “notch”, and so I’ve gotten kind of used to him! I normally think that squirrels are rats with big long fluffy tails 🙂 Sort of like I didn’t like cats, much less black cats, in my yard until we had a rat visitor… then the cat was my new best friend! Geesh, we really need to get a new dog. Then I wouldn’t be so hung up on birds, cats and squirrels! 🙂

I am rather proud of all of those pictures. Tough to catch and not scare him off!!!! 😀

  7. deb Said,

Love these pics! I can never get a picture of a bird OR a squirrel…either they’re too fast or I’m too slow lol!
