Black Thumb

I often post photos here on my blog of the flowers blooming in my yard. I plant just pansies in the winter, but I do plant a lot more in the spring. I have some perennials, but I do plant a lot of annuals. The older I get, the more I realize that I want more perennials, so I don’t have to keep doing this every year. I don’t enjoy the planting and I don’t enjoy the watering (watering pots of flowers here is a daily thing, because of the heat and the humidity), but I do enjoy seeing everything bloom. I don’t mass plant one flower – I like a lot of variety when it comes to type and color. My flower beds and planters don’t have a color theme. I have everything from red, yellow, purple, pink and orange 🙂

Lest you think I have a green thumb, I thought I would go outside my comfort zone and post some photos that I normally wouldn’t post.

This year, I have planted petunias 3 times. Two colors, from different stores (Lowe’s and Walmart, nothing from a nursery) – red and purple. The first set I bought lasted almost two weeks. The second set lasted about 6 days. Less than 3 weeks total, and now…. Here’s what they all look like now:

Yes, I apparently have a black thumb. At least where petunias this year are concerned. Believe me, I’m over petunias this year. Disgusted with them. So, I’m replacing some of these with “moss rose” because I love that little flower and usually have really good luck with it. No more petunias for me. No way. 😀

  1. Desert Songbird Said,

ANYTHING I plant looks like that. I have a black thumb all around. I’ve been known to kill cacti.

  2. annie Said,

    I never met a plant I couldn’t kill!

  3. jen Said,

You know what? I bought petunias last year and I have NO luck with them either…that was when I was living at mom’;s last summer..remember? I bought hot pink and put them in pots. I watched them all year. Watered them….daily…and picked the dead stuff off them every night. We moved them to my house when we moved in and they lasted until October…they were so beautiful…I replaced them mums…lol. Anyway. we put the pots with dead petunias under house. I pulled them out in April and left them in the sun and fertilized them and I’ll be darn they have come back just beautiful. I dint have tot do anything…kind of weird.
I always plant geraniums though…I love those.

  4. Karen Said,

I wonder if something got into those petunias? It looks like an animal might have been marking its territory. That’s what happened with my daisies last year. I finally went out and sprinkled black pepper all around. Mistake! It was right by my front door and it smelled like pepper for weeks! So dumb of me.

  5. Gail Said,

OH that is SO not like you at all! You do NOT have a black thumb…either the plants or something got them maybe like Karen said. Usually everything I see at your house always blooms so well.
    Me, that’s another story indeed!

  6. marianne Said,

I’m sorry you’re having such bad luck with them but eh, they’re a pain in the tush anyway. Pretty as can be initially but need constant dead-heading to stay showy. Your pretty little portulaca moss rose are more satisfying, I think.

I’ve been doing the same thing with more and more perennials – got lots of lilies. much as I love annuals, just don’t have the energy for all of them anymore. 🙁

  7. Kim Said,

I am with some of your other posters, less annuals and more perennials. I just don’t have the time or patience to deal with all that dead-heading. Petunias do well up here though–I would think maybe it is too hot by your for them?

But hey–look at the bright side, you have at least had weather to encourage gardening. I bought 2 flats of bedding plants 2 weeks ago and they are still in their little pots, plopped down where I plan on planting them if we ever get some weather that includes the sun, warmth and lack of rain. Go read my last post for a weather laugh!
*smiles* and hope you get your boxes looking pretty soon….
    Kim

  8. Susanne Said,

I’m moving to more perrineals too, because I cannot stand to fork over that much cash each spring. They have gotten crazy expensive around here. I’m horrible with gardens. Love the look, but hate the work and bugs and bees. My petunias are doing okay. But my coleius are having problems. I’ve lost half of them and I haven’t a clue why. Frustrating.

My mom, who has a green thumb, swears by the nursery flowers because they take better care of them there right from the beginning. Places like Walmart and Lowes depend on employees who don’t care and aren’t trained in flowers and they’re lucky if they get a watering before they’re wilted. Her garden is always beautiful. Sigh, she obviously did not pass that green thumb along in the genes to me. LOL.

  9. Dawn Said,

It’s funny, I can keep animals & babies alove, no problem, but don’t entrust a plant to my care. I forget to water & fertilize. Unless it has a voice, I just don’t seem able to maintain life force in something. =P
