QOTD – Christmas Movies or TV Show

Christmas QOTDToday’s “Question of the Day” is all about your favorite Christmas movie or TV show that you look forward to seeing every year. What movie or TV special do you like, or what’s your kids’ favorite? Do you have any traditions associated with this movie or TV show? Do you own any Christmas movies on DVD?

Here’s my answers – I love Christmas movies and I have several that I really like. I tend to like the older movies, the classics. My favorite is probably “It’s a Wonderful Life” and I own a copy on DVD. I also love the old Cary Grant movie called “The Bishop’s Wife” and own it on DVD also. I tend to pull those two movies out and put them on while I’m wrapping Christmas presents. I try to put something Christmas-y on the TV while decorating the tree, but that never goes over very well. This year, when I was decorating the tree, Tim was either watching golf, football or basketball on TV. I clearly remember our first Christmas together. I was so excited about decorating the tree together. Tim’s idea of “together” is to put up the tree, put on the lights, then turn the TV to basketball and watch TV while I do my part, hanging the ornaments. Not much togetherness, we each have our own part to play and there’s no Christmas music or shows on the TV that even remotely resemble the holiday spirit! Are you starting to see that Tim, while a wonderful guy, is not a huge fan of the whole Christmas thing. In fact, he loves to say “Bah Humbug” and I love to call him a Scrooge this time of year! Anyway, back to the movies. “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “The Bishop’s Wife” are my favorites, but I also like “Holiday Inn”, “Christmas in Connecticut” and to a small degree, “White Christmas”. I also have a really worn out VCR tape of a movie I taped off TV years and years ago, called “I’ll be Home for Christmas”. It starred a very young Courtney Cox, Nancy Travis, Peter Gallagher, Eva Marie Saint and Hal Holbrook (ok, found it here on IMDB). It’s a nostalgic look at a family during WWII who loses a loved one, good movie. Anyway, I don’t tend to like the newer stuff like the Griswold movies, Elf and movies like that. They’re ok, but at Christmas, I love my black and white classics!

How about you? What movies or TV shows do you look forward to watching at Christmas? Do you have any rituals or traditions about watching them? Leave me a comment and let me know!

I thought we were alike! jk

I tend to like the funny ones like the Griswolds or The Santa Clause (T. Allen). Or the kiddie ones like Rudolph, Frosty, etc. We have a bunch of those on VHS and a few on DVD.

I only watched one so far On Demand. It was a sappy one but cute, “All I Want for Christmas.”

  2. Amy Said,

Since we have kids we have to watch A Charlie Brown Christmas, How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Rudolph. Those are a given. But we also love the black and white version of Miracle on 34th Street and Meet Me in St. Louise, which is really not a Christmas movie, but that’s when we watch it!

    I love QOTD!

  3. Sadie Said,

We have a bunch of Christmas movies on DVD! We always start with “Scrooge” starring Albert Finney, and I also love “Holiday Inn” and “The Polar Express.” We also have: It’s a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, Scrooged (Bill Murray), Elf, White Christmas, Grinch (both cartoon and Jim Carrey), A Christmas Story, Christmas Vacation… I think there are more, but I can’t think of them. My husband LOVES Christmas movies. I have a similar, but different, problem with Christmas decorating. He wants to decorate, but he doesn’t want it to be fun and festive and musical, etc. It’s a chore that needs to be done. I’m working on that….

  4. jen Said,

Oh my gosh….we watch alot….the kids love Mickeys Twice Upon a Christmas….and Elf….I love A Christmas Story..which I have not watched yet but will on Christmas Eve. Scott likes Jingle all the Way and I also like Little House on the Prairie Christmas…I enjoy the old ones. I also liked a Very Brady Christmas….Good question.

  5. JennaG Said,

We have worn out our copy of White Christmas. It’s very much part of our Christmas traditions to wath it. We also enjoy It’s a Wonderful Life and The Bishop’s Wife. I haven’t seen Holiday Inn, but I would like to–anything with Bing Crosby at Christmas is wonderful.

  6. Heidi Said,

I love Charlie Brown Christmas and Frosty. I guess I’m a kid at heart. My husband claims that putting up the Christmas tree lights is all he has to do with the tree too!

  7. Lynne Said,

For movies, we like White Christmas, the original Miracle on 34th Street, and Christmas Vacation. Dom loves A Christmas Story, but I’m tired of that after 1 watching. But my absolute favorite – which isn’t on any more but I have on DVD – is Christmas Eve on Sesame Street. I know it by heart, but love watching it each year.

You know, I just might put it on right now!

  8. Cam Said,

We MUST watch “A Christmas Story” every year! Usually TNT plays it non-stop for 24 hours over Christmas Eve & Christmas, and we usually have it on starting Christmas Eve, and then we leave it on all during our gift-opening on Christmas morning & all Christmas Day…we usually watch it at least once all the way through, but mostly it’s just on in the background and we watch snippets here & there. It’s a hilarious movie and part of our tradition for years now!

I like to watch sappy Christmas TV movies while I decorate the tree. Really mindless stuff…I just enjoy it while I decorate.

  9. Lauren@Baseballs&Bows Said,

I have always loved the original Miracle on 34th Street. I just LOVE it!

  10. Karen Said,

My all time favorite is White Christmas. I also love Holiday Inn and the new Miracle on 34th Street. And The House Without a Christmas Tree is one that I just love. The time period takes me back to my childhood.

  11. Dianne Said,

I do like the Grinch. And we usually watch Christmas Vacation. OTher than that, I’m not reallly much into Christmas movies. Weird, huh? Mike likes the cartoon classics – Santa Claus is Coming to Town, etc. so we usually watch them if they’re on TV.

  12. theresa Said,

I own It’s a wonderful Life- love it. I like watching the Sound of Music during the holidays too, although not really a holiday movie.

  13. Debi Said,

I honestly can’t think of a single one I don’t love! The oldies but definitely goodies, the funny newer ones, the sappy made-for-TV ones, the kiddie ones…gosh, I just love them all! (And for Rich and I, Die Hard is a must-see every Christmas season…even if that is stretching the Christmas theme a bit.)

  14. Susanne Said,

My fave has got be It’s a Wonderful Life, also. The black and white version of course. And I like A Christmas Carol with Patrick Stewart. But I have to say I like a good Christmas comedy like “Christmas with the Kranks” or “Santa Clause” too.

  15. sherry Said,

I try to watch “March of the Wooden Soldiers” every year. I also usually catch “It’s a Wonderful Life” every other year or so. Mostly I LOVE LOVE LOVE the sappy movies on Lifetime and Hallmark channel! I watch one almost every night all December long.

For tv shows, I like all the old fasioned Charlie Browns, the claymation from the 60s and 70s — they are awesome.

Oh, and The Christmas Carol is a great one too — almost all of the versions I’ve seen!

    Merry Christmas!

    Sherry

  16. Maria Said,

I was cracking up at your description of your and Tim’s parts on decorating the tree. It totally reminded me of this book I just finished reading, On Strike for Christmas by Sheila Roberts. It was a fun read you might want to check out.

We have a few of the newer Christmas movies on DVD. None of the old ones. My boys aren’t really into watching them with me though my hubby will. The whole family did watch “The Holiday” with Jude Law and Cameron Diaz together on Christmas Night. I’m not sure how the Christmas season went by so quickly without me watching more of the movies.
