A Hit & A Miss

I probably won’t do this very often, but I thought I’d throw out a couple of quick movie reviews. As I blogged about a couple of days ago (here), we just started our new Netflix trial membership. We’ve received our first three movies, and have watched two of them. One hit and one miss 🙂

The hit was “Deja Vu” with Denzel Washington. We both liked that one. It does have some violence and language to it, but we both really liked the plot. The miss was “Catch and Release“. My sister Gail was here when we watched it, and I don’t think she liked it much at all either. I wanted to like it, as I really like Jennifer Garner, but it just wasn’t a good movie for us. Too quirky and too immoral for our crew. Tim really and truly disliked it. When I asked him to rate these movies (on a scale of 1-10), he gave “Catch and Release” a 3 and “Deja Vu” an 8 or 9.

We also checked out the second Pirates movie. I had wanted to watch that one again to refresh my mind on the plot, before we go see Pirates 3 in the theater. We’ve been seeing a lot of sequels this summer. We’ve seen Spiderman 3, Oceans 13 and the 2nd Fantastic Four movie. This weekend or next, we’ll probably go see Pirates. We’re both really looking forward to the third Bourne movie coming out in August, also.

Up next for us from Netflix (remember, you can check my queue out on my sidebar, courtesy of the neat plug-in I installed) is one for Tim (“Flags of Our Fathers”) and one for me (“The Queen”). Lots of popcorn in my future 😀

  1. Danielle Said,

We just watched the first season of “The 4400” through our netflix account. It’s a really cool show about 4400 people who were abducted who suddenly all get returned at the same time. Traces them trying to put their lives back together, etc. It’s a really fun viewing too, if you like that sort of stuff (which we do, “Heroes” and “Lost” are our 2 must see tv shows).

I love Netflix, I adore being able to just get stuff in the mail and not have to run to the video store.

  2. Heidi Said,

Well, we might just put Deja Vu on our list then. I wouldn’t have picked it up other wise…

  3. booklogged Said,

I really like Denzel Washington, so I’m going to add this to my Netflix que. I love Netflix.

  4. Southern Girl Said,

I want you to know I finally couldn’t stand all your talk about Netflix any longer, so I gave in last night and resubscribed. ;-D That’s what I do — sub for a couple months, watch as many movies as I can to get me caught up on the latest that I’ve missed, and then drop the subscription for a year or so. It was about time for me to pick it up again. 😉

I looked at Deja Vu when I was making out my queue, but didn’t put it on there….I think I’ll go back and add it. I DID put Catch and Release on there, but now I’m not so sure. We’ll see. I should get my first two movies tomorrow!

  5. Kelly Said,

    Great reviews : )

  6. Write From Karen Said,

Hey Stacy! Totally agree on “Deja Vu” – I thought the whole premise was interesting. “Catch and Release,” again, I agree. The movie was okay, it just didn’t go anywhere and yes, it was hard to swallow the fact that she could fall in love again so quickly after her fiance’s death.

LOVED “The Queen.” And I’m sort of surprised. I think the biggest reason for me was because I liked the actress playing The Queen.

And what a GREAT idea about watching Pirates 2! I want to take the boys to see Pirates 3 and that will be a great segway as I’m sure they have forgotten about it.

  7. Sonya Said,

I would rate those movies the same as you. I was disappointed with Catch & Release. Jeff and I watched Miss Potter last night and loved it! Very meaningful and clean.

  8. Stacy Said,

Nice to hear about Deja Vu. We have a friend who worked on the crew of that movie and we meant to watch it, but missed it somehow. Guess we need to rent it so we can tell her all about how much we like it when we see her next!!

  9. Susanne Said,

My daughter and I both loved Deja Vu. Good idea watching the 2nd Pirates again because it totally continues with the srory. I really enjoyed the Queen and gave me a whole new understanding of why they react the way they do.

  10. Kara Said,

I am going toput “Deja Vu” on my list right now – I always need another movie to add to my “super-long no way I’ll ever see al these movies” list!

We liked “Pirates 3″…I definitely wished I had watched “2” before I saw it. And make sure you stay all the way through the credits – there is a little more movie at the end of the credits.

  11. annie Said,

I rented catch & release and never watched it. I guess I didn’t miss anything.
Me & Amanda saw dreamgirls in the theater and we loved it… have you seen it yet?

  12. rach Said,

Hi Stacy. We saw Deja Vu too and we enjoyed the twist and turns in the plot. We haven’t seen Fantastic Four sequel yet. Probably this weekend or early next week. Have a fun-filled weekend!

  13. Debi Said,

Glad you like Deja Vu…that’s one movie I’ve really been wanting to see. Never even heard of the other one (must get out more often, I know).

  14. annie Said,

hey stacy, you rock! (come see! scroll down past amanda’s canada pics)

  15. Sparky Duck Said,

The queen was quite good, well Helen Mirren was quite good, hope you enjoy it

  16. Shayna Said,

We also saw Catch and Release, and while we loved Jennifer Garner, the love didn’t extend to the actual movie. Is that possible? We have Blockbuster online and watched all of Alias, and are now working our way through Buffy. Although I am a little embarrassed to admit that…. We need to add The Fountain, and I am dying to see Because I Said So.
As for theater movies, definitely Pirates 3, License to Wed, and Evan Almighty! Lets hope we get there before labor kicks in 🙂

  17. Karen Said,

Thanks for the movie reviews. I’ll have to remember DeJaVu — it’s hard to find movies that DH and I both enjoy. Love “The Queen”. I’d like to see Flags of Our Fathers, too.

  18. Gail Said,

I didn’t just hate the movie, wanted to really like it because I like Jennifer Garner but I don’t like all the immoral stuff and it was hard to grasp that she could fall for someone else so quick. We’ll have to see about Deja Vu maybe.
I think we rented Flags before but not sure either of us fully followed the whole movie, not sure if we’ll get it again or not.

  19. Amy Said,

I saw Deja Vu is the theaters and loved it and recently watched it with my daughter. She works at Blockbuster and gets five free rentals a week! I love Denzel Washington, but only when he’s playing a nice guy. I saw a trailer for some new movie and he plays a really evil guy. Won’t be seeing that one!

  20. Shawna Said,

I saw Catch adn Release. I liked it pretty well, but not enough to watch it again. The next sequel on our list is Harry Potter.
