Sprinklers

I just posted this photo over on my Project365 blog for today… not a great photo, but representative of my day:

Sprinklers

It’s really hot and dry here, and I’m having to drag out the sprinklers and try to water the grass. Tim and I are both hoping that any new house we get in the future has an in-ground sprinkler system. Tim offered years ago to dig up part of our yard and install one for me, but the el-cheapo side of me didn’t see the need to spend the money. After all, I can get outside and drag sprinklers around as needed. Of course, the first few times I do this every spring or summer, I don’t mind a bit. As the summer wears on and the hotter and dryer it gets, it really gets to be a pain. ๐Ÿ™„

I remember growing up, I used to love it when my dad ran the sprinklers. I would put on my bathing suit and go outside to play in the sprinklers. I love getting wet and cooled off and playing in the water. I always thought if we had kids, that would be a fun summer thing for them to do. And along those same lines, I was hoping that our new dog Beau (who we got late last year in the fall, after we had put up the sprinklers for the year), would enjoy playing in them. Nope, no way. The dog does not like the sprinklers or the water hose. All fall and winter and early spring, the only time he was exposed to the water hose was to get a bath, which he detested. Now, consequently, he won’t go anywhere near the hose or sprinklers. We’ve both been working with him, trying to get him to drink water out of the hose. And he is getting better about that, but he still won’t go anywhere near the sprinklers.

So, how about a “Question of the Day” about sprinklers – do you have an in ground sprinkler system for your yard? If not, do you drag out the sprinklers or does someone else in your house take care of that? Do you have water restrictions where you live? And as for the kids and pets – do they like to play in the sprinklers? Or do you? ๐Ÿ™‚ Leave me a comment and let me know!

[…] P.S.ร‚ย  I “cross-posted” this photo over at my regular blog, and also asked a “Question of the Day” about sprinklers.ร‚ย  Hop on over and play along, if you’d like […]

  2. Stacy Said,

Right after we got Vader we re-did our backyard (pulled out a bunch of bushes and trees) and installed an in-ground system. We love it! Vader loves it!! We only let him out when Jeff is home to dry him off, but he loves to run from sprinkler head to spinkler head trying to drink it dry, then he runs wildly through the yard with his ball. It’s a hoot to watch and we have as much fun watching him as he has playing in it!

Restrictions – We can’t water from 10 am to 6 pm. Other than that we are good to go.

  3. twiga92 Said,

Ah the beauty of apartment living! We don’t worry about sprinklers but our apartment complex does use them. If I leave the apartment too early in the morning I have to try not to get wet cuze one of the sprinklers sprays over our front sidewalk (go figure!). No water restrictions that I know of but I don’t follow them since I don’t worry about the yard.

  4. Karla Said,

Hi! Thanks for visiting my blog. My kids love the sprinklers! They would play in it every day if I let them.

  5. Karen Said,

We have an in-ground system and my hubby extended it so that it waters our large brick planter and the rose garden. I do like to water all the smaller planters around our house. I go out in the early morning or evening and just circle the yard, barefooted and admiring the flowers. Of course, it’s only May, so it’s still lots of fun to do! Ask me in July!

  6. Susie Said,

We unfortunately don’t use sprinklers. Because we have so much grass (way too much, if you ask me!) and only a few small trees, our water bill would be $100 if we watered the grass regularly. I can look out my window now and see that our grass is slowly but surely turning a really ugly brown. ๐Ÿ™ No rain in our forecast, either!

  7. Carrie Said,

No, we don’t have an inground system. My husband waters the lawn everyday and he just moves them around. The girls would play in them everyday if I let them. No water restrictions here, thank goodness.

  8. Desert Songbird Said,

In the older parts of the city here, in order to water your lawn, you flood it. Most the lawns are concave so as to hold water when it’s flooded/irrigated. Out here in the newer suburbs, we have built in sprinkler systems.

My kids love to play in the sprinklers (especially since we don’t have a pool like most everyone else around here), but we have them on timers, so in order for them to play, we need to manually turn them on. When we had Pandora, she hated water, but she’d always manage to walk through a sprinkler or two when it was over 100 degrees.

Me, I’m all for playing in the sprinklers!

BTW, no rain here for months. Sigh.

  9. Simply Dawn Said,

No sprinkle system for us. It would be so hard to water our lawn and it would cost too much so I just do a rain dance (which hasn’t been working as you know…hehe) But I do go out in the afternoons and water my plants.

  10. JennaG Said,

We had an inground system in Washington state–loved it! I hate watering the yard–and would give up long before summer was over if my hubby would let me. I hate the large water bills!

  11. Heidi Said,

We rarely water our grass, only if we are reseeding or something like that.

That being said, we do have sprinklers for playing outside. My little boy is a little dubious about them. He likes to watch them from afar, but so far he’s not so happy about running in them.

Like you, as a girl, I loved the sprinkler to play in!

  12. Debi Said,

We’re like Heidi…the only time we water our grass is if we’re reseeding. We don’t have water restrictions, but we do try to be very conscious of our water use. That being said, we do still own a sprinkler and let the kids play in it occasionally.

  13. Claire Said,

If only our “dry” really was dry with no humidity…then the heat wouldnt be quite so bad.

  14. Laura Said,

No system here – we have the move the sprinkler once in both yards. We can only water Wednesdays and Saturdays (and we’re on meters, so it’s not like we don’t pay for every drop). It’s not a terrible situation, but the grass will starting struggling later in the summer.

  15. mamichelle Said,

I don’t personally put the sprinklers out. My dh does only if it gets REALLY dry. We have well water so no restrictions here (others in my town have town water and do have restrictions).

My dh claims to have the greenest lawn in the neighborhood. I tell him, “of course you do”!!!!

  16. OC Mom Said,

We are in Southern California and have automatic sprinklers. I think most newer houses have them…otherwise, SoCal wouldn’t be nearly as green & lush as it is!

  17. tiany Said,

We drag out the sprinkler and our boysรขโ‚ฌโ„ข looove to play in it when they can. We do have water restrictions here and we are only allowed to water first thing in the am (which is the best time to water anyway) or after 5pm (a horrible time to water due to mold) I really wish we did have a sprinkler system installed it was save us lots of time and energy! Hubby ids usually the one that is in charge of watering the grass and flower beds.

  18. deb Said,

We don’t have sprinklers, nor have I ever lived in a house that had a sprinkler system outside. We’re also not on any kind of water restrictions and I can’t ever remember having to deal with those either. Not that it doesn’t get terribly dry because it does.

We water the flower containers and beds every night unless it’s rained. It hasn’t rained in a week and it doesn’t look like we’re going to get rain any time soon. No telling what my water / sewer bill is going to be!

Scott does all the watering in the evenings and it takes him about 30 minutes. We don’t water the grass.

Hank, our Labrador, LOVES playing in the water that comes from the hose!

Hope we all get some rain soon!

  19. Gail Said,

Bring those sprinklers to my house, I need the help watering. ๐Ÿ™‚

Inground sprinkler system? That would be a big NO! We’re only in the irrigation business you know ๐Ÿ™‚ can’t really have that stuff at home!
Oh wait, the irrigation system is me……I have to drag the hoses/sprinklers all around the yard and my yard is WAY bigger than yours, that’s why I want you to come help me!
    No water restrictions.
Kids used to love playing in the sprinklers, so did Caleb, the best dog evah!

  20. Suzanne Said,

I would LOVE to have an automatic system at the house. Many of our neighbors do, and my boss has at his last 3 houses. That would be me, the watering person. My only problem(s) are:
    not home enuf
not at right time of day to water(morning) instead of at 9:00 p.m.
bring on those irrigation systems, Gail

  21. Write From Karen Said,

Nope. We don’t have an automatic system and we don’t drag our sprinkler out – we prefer the dry, crunchy, brown grass, quite frankly. (I’m teasing, by the way. *grin*)

Seriously though, we don’t water very often. But when we do, the boys have (and still do, shh) play in the sprinkler. In fact, I have this adorable picture of them having a “sword” fight in the water.

Though I don’t play in the sprinkler, I DO have moments of weakness (usually when it’s dark outside and my neighbors can’t get a good look at me. *grin*)

  22. Cam Said,

Definitely no automatic system; we do have a couple of plain old sprinklers, though. We don’t use them often at all except for G to play with. He loves the sprinkler and it’s a great way to keep him cool whenever he’s outside in the heat for a long time. Reagan loves the sprinkler, too. He likes to attack the water right as it comes out of the holes. It’s hilarious. He’s very careful when G is playing in the sprinkler, to wait till G isn’t near it before he attacks it.

  23. Mandalyn Said,

Yes, we have to drag the sprinkler around to water our grass! Since we live in the deep South, there are no water restrictions–thank goodness!

How we would love to have in ground sprinklers!!

  24. rach Said,

It’s hot and dry here too. There are days when we water the plants twice a day to keep them from drying too much. We don’t have sprinklers in our garden. We just use a regular hose. I’m glad we don’t have any water restrictions in our area. In some areas in Manila, there is scarcity of water. I’m glad we’re not affected by it. It’s so hot, I like to take a bath twice, sometimes thrice a day to feel refreshed.

  25. CoachJ Said,

We don’t have an inground sprinkler system in our front yard at all, but we do have something in the back. We just found it this summer after being here for 10 1/2 years! It’s a pipe that goes from the faucet on the house to the back of the yard. It just happens to come out right beside our back garden. ๐Ÿ™‚ Go, us! So the hubby, an electrician, put a small pipe in the ground and positioned it just so, and now we can water our garden very easily. We have to prioritize around here: water the garden first, then the grass. Unfortunately our grass in the front yard is dying around an oak tree because of our priorities. But we have great tomatoes, and cucumbers, and green beans, and peas, and watermelons, and corn. And sunflowers. Would you like to come by for dinner? We could go down memory lane together ;0)

  26. Sherry Said,

I have a dollar store sprinkler. LOL It spins around and Emme gets in her bathing suit and jumps through it, just like you described!

I spend 20-30 minutes, 1-2x a day going around with the hose watering all my flowers.

    Sherry

  27. Susanne Said,

We have an underground sprinkler but it’s still a pain. It still misses a couple spots and if you have anything like a swingset that will interfere with all the grass getting watered so I still have to get out there and water spots. We don’t have water restrictions here.
