I blogged a couple of days ago about the 2 coons (raccoons) that we have caught in our live animal trap (read about it here). We still load the trap every evening, thinking we might have more coons that are knocking over things and eating all the bird’s and squirrel’s food.
Last night, it was not a coon that got caught in the trap. It was a possum. What a hideous little creature (I’ll only post one picture here because the thing is so nasty and ugly; more on the extended page). The coons were rather cute in comparison and not nearly so disgusting. Ick.
I also failed to mention earlier that even though we’re glad to catch these things (and release them in woods several miles away), they are still doing their best to tear up my yard. Isn’t there something in Murphy’s law about “if it ain’t one thing, it’s another”?!!
They are digging up all the grass underneath the cage, trying to get out:
We learned after the first coon not to position the cage near the fence – they claw and scrap and chew on the fence boards, trying to get out:
If you can stand to look at the butt-ugly thing, there’s a couple more possum pictures on the extended page. It really grossed me out early this morning to see this thing and it was hissing at me too (oh, and in one picture, you can see the blood on the cage where the thing was gnawing, trying to get free)….
Ugly, Nasty, Hideous Possum (look at the blood by his mouth):
Gag – a close up!
GGGGROOOOOSSSS! I hate critters and yeah, they will tear up stuff so doesn’t take long to know to move it AWAY from the fence!
Ick, I’m sure we could catch some too if we tried, but you know, ignorance is bliss sometimes.
Gail – you’re so right. You have no idea how much that thing grossed me out this morning. Early. Still sleepy and hungry and that thing was sooo nasty. I wouldn’t have minded if Tim wanted to get rid of that one. The coons were almost cute. This thing was revolting. But I kept telling myself, this is one of God’s creatures (yuck, like a snake). Noah put them on the ark for a reason, although I have no idea why!
EWWWW! I do not like your pictures today. YUCK!
I don’t like coons or possums, but especially not something that would hiss at me. And I’m still waiting one day on some explanations of why we have certain creatures, mosquitoes being one of them for me! And yes snakes too.
GROSS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>I hate these even more than Coons……..they are nasty and mean, and ugly, how do these creatures get under/around your fence?? I can understand if they were outside it…………..you need a new fence??
I don’t remember whose site I followed to yours but I’m glad I did. You must be in MS judging from the upcoming preseason game and the fact that Nevada Barr is a “local” author. Keep reading her books. They are good. Deep South is actually set in Clinton and on the Trace! It’s pretty interesting reading her descriptions of the south. Have fun at the game!
awwww, he’s kinda cute, in a freaky sort of way! I LOVE Nevada Barr, don’t see where you mentioned her, but notice the commentor above me mentioned her!
Opossums are the scourge of the earth. They are ugly, and nasty and vicious and the carry rabies. You can eliminate as many as you like as far as I am concerned.

Oh, yuck, ick…why did I look at the extra pictures? 😀 I hate those nasty things, too! There were lots of them around the house where I grew up, and my dad always had those cages to catch them. He’d take them out and shoot them.
I’m glad you’ve gotten rid of the coons and that possum, and I’ll have to read further to see if you got any rats yet.
