Books, Books and More Books!

I went to get my hair cut this morning, and also made a nice long leisurely visit to the library. I have blogged about this many times before, but I’ll say it again. Oh how I love the library! I always have, as far back as I can remember. I love to read, love books, love bookstores, love libraries. I can remember spending a lot of my time growing up sitting alone, reading a book. It was either that or tv (I didn’t have a lot of friends my age in the neighborhood we lived in, and my sisters went away to college when I started first grade). Books have always been wondrous things to me. A means of escape or a comfortable friend I could sit back and get absorbed with.

I can remember getting in trouble lots of nights growing up. I would dig out my flashlight and make a tent with my sheet and stay up past my bedtime reading. My mom would come in and “catch” me, and she would always, always, always fuss at me and tell me that I was going to put my eyes out and go blind. “You better turn that flashlight off!” she’d say.

Anyway, back to present day. I finished both of the Harmony books I had checked out a couple of weeks ago and returned those. I found at least 8 books I wanted to check out, but was good, and only walked out with 4. I’ve added them to my sidebar.

One of them is the next in the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. I’m up to the 7th one (and yes, I must read them in order, I’m very anal retentive that way). I think I will read it first. These books, although a little off color in language and setting, are very funny and very light reads. I can always read them quickly. After that, I’m not sure what order I’ll read them in. I picked up the next one in the Harmony series by Philip Gulley, about my Midwestern Quaker pastor and his quirky yet lovable congregation. These are very similar to the Mitford books by Jan Karon, except that I have read all of those and am anxiously awaiting the new one that comes out later this year. I love to read about Father Tim! 🙂

On Gail’s advice, I’m going to try a Karen Kingsbury book. I have been trying for almost two months to check out “One Tuesday Morning”, her book about 9-11, but it is always checked out. I decided to try another of hers first, Christian women’s fiction, I believe. This one is called “Oceans Apart”. Hopefully they will get “One Tuesday Morning” back in soon, or else I’ll be forced to get down and dirty and put that sucker on the reserve list in my name! 🙂

The other book I got is by Debbie Macomber, whose books I have not yet read. I believe I read something about her and her books on another lady’s blog that I read, a girl who is an avid knitter. This particular book is about a ladies knitting group, and it’s called “The Shop on Blossom Street”. I was very pleased to see that the Ridgeland branch of my library had several books by Macomber, so if I like this book, I have more to check out, including a sequel or two to this book.

I have a long list for the next time I go, but in the mean time, I’m really looking forward to reading all of these. Normally my favorite time to read is in the winter, curled up in my big chair next to the fireplace. But with the weather as hot as it is (supposed to be 97 today, with a heat index of 105 or more), I’m just as happy to snuggle up (sans blanket) inside with the AC running full blast and read in the evenings.

P.S. I just entered a review of the Harmony books on our main website, Hambones.org. You can click here to go read it, and I also included a link to the author’s homepage, where you can read more about this series, and I believe, even read an excerpt from one or more of the books. Hope that helps! 🙂
