I had hoped that by the time today got here (the day before we leave on vacation), that I would have gotten a lot more done and ready for our trip. WRONG. I am still way behind in everything I need to have done before we leave, and I’m starting to really doubt how much of it I can get completed before we pull out of the driveway tomorrow morning.
Oh well.
Part of the problem is that I’m more interested in playing on Hambones, reading blogs, surfing my favorite sites – and mainly – playing with my new iPod than concentrating on laundry, cleaning, packing, list-making and scratching off, trip planning, etc. Oh well. I’m sure we’ll get there, hopefully have clean clothes, find our way around, see the sights, and get home in one piece.
Anyone have any last minute advice before we leave on our weeklong summer vacation to Washington DC? Any travel pointers? Any tips on what “not to miss” in DC? Anyone? Bueller? Anyone?
I just posted a news story on the home page of Hambones – that we hope the site stays up and running while we are gone (it should, unless we have a power outage), and that our internet access is working in the hotel we are staying at. If all goes as planned, then check back here in a couple of days as I plan to blog from the hotel about our vacation. Hopefully on a daily basis. So check back later on this week and over the 4th of July weekend. Hopefully we will have lots to report! I plan to use this blog like an electronic travel journal. Keep your fingers crossed!
i say, don’t try to do too much work BEFORE you leave home! it will be there when you get back, and there will be more laundry then! so, just relax and enjoy the trip……..see everything that you have time for.
don’t carry a purse, maybe use a small backpack instead–purses are too much trouble while sightseeing to keep on your shoulder. carry some water around with you.
and i’m sure you are trying to see the “big” things:
white house, capitol, smithsonian, washington monument from afar probably, lincoln memorial definitely, jefferson memorial, vietnam one, arlington, archives maybe and library of congress maybe, mount vernon, ford’s theater.
that’s probably already more than you will have time for! more: supreme court building, union station, the holocaust museum we LOVED, bureau of engraving and printing, we toured the fbi, i think it is the j. edgar hoover building and they have a firearms demonstration that tim might like or they used to.
as far as smithsonian, the american history, natural history and air and space are my favorite-and those could easily take 3 days! so you will have to hurry thru some of it! take tours when they are available, like library of congress had a good tour and the capitol has one too. i think we even ate once somewhere in the capitol, bean soup is traditional there! and see the senate or congress if they are in session, they have a gallery to view from.
i should have given you my d.c. travel book or maybe you could have gotten an updated one, mine is a little old, but it has 7 walking tours in it, where to go and what to see and approx times and we did 2 of them i think. so, it has good info in it. and there are great places to eat, ask locals maybe and don’t do chain stuff since you will want to do something local.
just go, go, go til you drop!
