Challenger Anniversary

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 25 years since the Challenger disaster. I suppose there are events in ones lifetime, where you always remember where you were and what you were doing. I’m sure 9/11 is for all Americans, and for me, the Challenger accident is, as well.

I was in college. Every Tuesday, we had chapel (I went to a small Presbyterian college). I remember before they started the chapel service, they told us what had happened. We prayed for the astronauts and their families, and after a short time, they dismissed everyone. I lived in the newest dorm, which also happened to be close to our chapel area. Our lobby was packed after we were released from chapel. (Notice I said lobby, guys were not allowed upstairs in the girls dorms and vice versa.) We watched the coverage for a long time. I think I even skipped lunch that day, but had to leave after for either a lab or an on-campus job, I don’t remember. I just remember being numb and so shocked by what had happened.

Do you remember where you were or what you were doing when this accident happened?

  1. Dawn Said,

I remember it happening but I don’t recall the specifics of the day. I know I was in school. I was in the fourth grade at the time. I remembering knowing something terrible had happened, when they announced it, but I think at the young age of 9, I didn’t really grasp what it all meant.

  2. cam Said,

I was in 7th grade, we’d just returned to pre-algebra classroom after lunch, and our teacher told us (she cried).

  3. Laura Said,

It happened on my 4th birthday. And I don’t remember anything, but it’s near to my heart.

I do remember Columbia. For a space program/shuttle fan, it was a huge blow. Really hard.

  4. Shari Said,

I was in my 11th grade Speech class with my favorite teacher in high school. Still remember our principal coming over the intercom and telling us what had happened and going home to watch the coverage for the rest of the day. 🙁

  5. Debi M. Said,

I was in Bangladesh at the time, I was in 6th grade. I was walking to school and my teacher told me about it. I remember she joked like “don’t you wish I’d been the teacher that won?” and I thought that was macabre of her to say something like that when something so horrible had happened.

  6. Lauren@BaseballsandBows Said,

I was in sixth grade. We were changing classes, and my science teacher ran out into the hallway crying. We all went to the library to watch the footage on T.V.

On another note, my college had the same dorm rules–no members of the opposite sex past the lobby. I LOVED it! I remember visiting one of my friends at Wake Forest and being so paranoid about going from her room to the bathroom because guys were walking around everywhere.

  7. Karen Said,

I was working at a company that had provided some of the parts for the space shuttles, so it was quite devastating. I remember there were t.v.’s set up all over the building for employees to watch. Such a sad day.

  8. Gail Said,

I was at home, the old house, David was a little baby! I watched it live on tv and was kind of stunned, didn’t quite believe it at first. Don was working there and I called him in to watch it. It was very sad and it still makes me feel funny when I see it replayed all these years later.

  9. Desert Songbird Said,

I certainly do remember. It was my birthday. I was working a temp job that I hated filing medical records at a hospital. My then husband was going through treatment at the same hospital. I remember he dropped me off at work that morning and then went to his therapy session. It started snowing. When he picked me up from work that evening, it was still snowing lightly, and he told me what had happened. I was in shock the rest of the night.
