It’s a little thing, but I’ve decided to go with more glass and less plastic in my kitchen. For quite a while now, I’ve been thinking about trying to get rid of most of my Rubbermaid / Tupperware / Misc Plastic containers. I have read (or as Tim thinks, bought into the hype) that there’s stuff in the plastic that can leach into your food. Plus, plastic gets stained with tomato products like spaghetti, chili, etc. Now, I like plastic for the no-breakage option, but I’m trying really hard to be careful and not chip or break my glass containers.
I bought a couple of 3 pack Pyrex glass storage containers at Walmart to give them a try. A few days later, Tim and I were at Sam’s, and he found this. He came and got me and said, “Let’s get this for you, I think you’ll love it!”. Such a sweetie 🙂
I told him, I really don’t need that many containers, nor do I have room for them. But, I started going through my cabinets and decided I could purge some other things that I had. I had a set of stainless /coated storage containers, some ramekins, as well as all of my Rubbermaid containers. Once I cleaned all of them out, I had enough room for all of my red Pyrex glass containers.
I’ve had them a few weeks now, and I really like them. I can mix up something like chicken salad in one of the containers, then just store it in the fridge. I can scoop up leftovers from supper, then when we want to warm them up for lunch the next day, I don’t have to worry about taking them out of the plastic and putting them on something else to warm up (that’s mostly what I had read about plastic, don’t microwave in it and heat them and the contents up). I can pop them in the freezer, I can put them in the dishwasher and they come out looking brand new. I really like this set from Sam’s Club, because I have some rectangular / oblong ones in addition to different sizes of round ones. Lots of variety and lots of storage sizes. All good things 🙂
So, here’s a quick question – do you do leftovers at your house? Do you store them in plastic or glass? Do you freeze leftovers?
Have a great, happy, joyous day 🙂
I still use the plastic ones – not the good ones like Rubbermaid or Tupperware, but the cheap ones that can get thrown away if they get too yucky looking. But I’ve thought about switching to glass for the same reasons you gave.
The set that Tim got you at Sam’s – what are the different sizes? I’d have to think about a big set like that because it might have sizes that I don’t really need. I’ll have to look in Walmart and see what they have there.
Glad to see someone else doing this. I switched completely to glass storage two years ago. I bought two multi-pack boxes at Bed Bath & Beyond with their 20% off coupons. I also replaced all the boys’ bowls & dishes with corelle stuff (less likely to break when they knock them down) instead of the usual plastic kid dishes. Plastic is particularly toxic when heated in the microwave. It’s not hype, BTW. 😉
I also replaced all my nonstick pots & pans with stainless steel (there is an a-ma-zing tri-ply clad set sold at Walmart by Tramontina that is identical to the pricey All-Clad, that I’ve used for two years and LOVE!). Nonstick is incredibly toxic when heated.
I am thinking of making the switch to glass as well. HATE the plastic!
I hate leftovers. We have a lot of them, but truthfully the husband eats most of them. I’m just not a leftover person AT. ALL.
We use very little glass. Wish I had the time, money, and will to care otherwise, but I don’t. I’m more worried about not having room in my kitchen to store the glasses and bowls we use and trying to save up for a new fridge that doesn’t run up my power bill. 😉
I made this switch a little over a year ago and I *love* my Pyrex. Especially because (cooking for only two) I always have leftovers & I use them for my lunch at work the following day. I’ve been really pleased with the quality & durability of the Pyrex and I don’t think that they are even that much more costly than plastic. And? No more staining from red pasta sauce!!
We don’t usually have a lot of leftovers around here (mostly because I’m a cooking slacker!) but I have to agree that glass is better…..and all those rumors of plastic being bad for you probably are true!
Oh no, don’t make me switch!!! LOL Yes, we do store leftovers and I use whatever is the right size. It could be a regular bowl from my Fiestaware, a tupperware, a toss-away plastic one, etc. I got rid of all the ugly stained tupperware and rubbermaid when I moved. I dont’ know if I believe all the hype. I go back and forth!!
I mostly use tupperware. I am not real concerned about the hype. I know A LOT about plastic having worked in that industry, and I think if you have newer microwave-safe plastic and do not heat at high power all the time you will be fine. I also prefer to drink out of plastic cups (which I know is not common).
I do use my pyrex a lot but my set did not come with lids! If I were to buy new pyrex (if I break them) all the new sets seem to come with lids.
Your set looks really nice!
I do still store leftovers in plastic sometimes, but we have mostly switched to glass (and I very rarely reheat things in plastic). I am glad to read about the Wal-Mart stainless steel pots and pans that cam mentioned. I may consider them when I get new ones. I use non-stick now, but I never set the eyes higher than medium b/c they are considered toxic when heated on high.
I have a few glass storage containers, but mostly plastic. You are making me want to make the switch though! We usually have leftovers and pack them for lunch the next day.
I have been thinking about switching for a while…I think you might have just motivated me to finally do it! Every time I put something in a plastic container I feel weird about it, so I am guessing that is a sign!
