Valentines or Chinese New Year?

I’m just a little goofy, because I got excited when I found out a few days ago that this year, Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day are on the same day 😀

If you’ve visited here before, you might remember me blogging about the fact that Tim doesn’t really buy into the “greeting card holidays” as he calls them. Valentines is his biggest pet peeve. And even though I love to get flowers or chocolates or even a card, I really do see his point.

In the beginning, when we were dating and first married, he pushed through his cynicism and did what I wanted – sent me expensive flowers, took me out to nice restaurants, etc for Valentines Day. One year, we waited at a local Italian place (Amerigo) for over two hours then had less than stellar food and service. We had been married a few years and I was starting to see his point, but that ill-fated date night out on Valentines Day sealed it for me. These days, we do little to observe Valentines. Tim is wonderful about getting me flowers or cards or happies any of the other 360+ days out of the year (anniversary and birthday don’t count!), so Valentines really is not a big deal for us. We normally grill out a steak and watch tv, no biggie.

This year though, I saw that the Chinese New Year is on February 14. So, I’m really excited! You see, Chinese food is one of my most favorite things in the whole world. And Tim loves to get take-out more than eat it in restaurants, so it’s a win-win thing for us. I’m hoping we can get some Chinese food this weekend; in fact, I’m already planning for it and looking forward to it 🙂 We do have some steaks in the freezer, so maybe the other night (Saturday), we can grill out a steak and just celebrate both with our favorite foods 😀

BTW, I’m a Dragon and Tim’s a Rooster on the Chinese zodiac… we always have fun reading about those on the paper place-mats at one of the local Chinese places we visit. Have you ever checked to see what you are? You can read about the Chinese New Year here at Wikipedia, or find out your sign here.

Do you have plans for either holiday this weekend?

  1. mamichelle Said,

Too funny! We don’t always do anything either. We definitely don’t get each other anything any more. I used to get chocolates and didn’t want them because I was always dieting. My hubby thinks flowers are a waste because they die. I tend to agree.

The other issue is that my youngest’s birthday is the 15th. This year his birthday is on a Monday. He works until 9:30 p.m. so we can’t have dinner which brings us to Sunday, Valentine’s Day. He works until 6 but we’ll have a late birthday dinner. Sooooooo….we will plan on going out to dinner on Sat. and I’m sure it will be packed everywhere we go. Either that or we can move it to Monday night. My mom will be away and we will be freeeeeeee! LOL

  2. Laura Said,

Our tradition on Valentine’s Day is to order in a pepperoni and olive pizza and eat it by candlelight. We started it years ago after we stopped going out to crowded restaurants – we both realized we’d rather stay at home anyway. I’m also going to make him a heart-shaped brownie. Nothing too special. But I do LOVE flowers – I always send my mom flowers for every occasion – and the husb will probably get me some flowers. 😉

  3. Deanna Said,

Ooooh! I love getting Chinese food too and we NEVER eat out on Valentine’s Day (or any other holiday for that matter). Our only real tradition on Valentine’s Day is to make chocolate dipped strawberries. We have done that every year we have been married.

I refuse to let my husband send me flowers. They just die! I would rather have the cash. Does that sound awful?

  4. Desert Songbird Said,

It’s a three day weekend for the kids AND for hubby, but we have no plans as of yet. My husband is a lot like Tim regarding the whole “greeting card holiday” thing, but for the past couple of years, my husband has been a slacker when it comes to flowers. In fact, for my birthday a few weeks ago, I had to REMIND him and the kids that I would like some roses and a birthday cake – sheesh!

So, I doubt we’ll do anything special except hubby may take me out to dinner w/o the kids this weekend. That would be nice. *smile*

  5. Sadie Said,

I’m a Tiger… which I always found interesting given my college basketball loyalties.

I have a girlfriend coming to visit this weekend, she’s taking a break from men too, so we will have a Valentine-less weekend. 😉
