Catching Up

Halloween
Well, it turned out to be a busy week for me, with jury duty and other stuff going on. I haven’t had a chance to blog, or to stop by and visit most of my favorite blogs. And it doesn’t look like I will have time today or this weekend, either, as we have a lot planned.

I ended up going 3 days for jury duty. I was never actually selected and impaneled on a jury, and I was very glad. This was apparently criminal week at our local circuit court, and no civil cases were on the docket. There were at least two murder trials going on. One was a man who, with two other men, allegedly robbed, shot and killed an elderly couple, then set fire to their home. The other two men had already pleaded guilty. We actually went through the entire “voir dire” process and heard opening statements on this case. I had to raise my hand when they asked if gruesome or gory photographs or evidence that would be introduced would bother us. Yes, it would. I was not selected for this jury, and I believe they ended up with a plea bargain before the jury actually had to hand down a verdict. The other murder case reached an agreement before we began the voir dire process. It was another murder, a father who shot his wife repeatedly with a bolt-action rifle, in front of their two small children. I’m so glad I didn’t have to be on either jury. It was an interesting process though. I just didn’t really like the hour to hour, day to day nature of not knowing if I’d be serving, was being released, etc. I like to plan my days and my week, and not knowing always throws a little kink in things 🙂

This weekend is going to be busy also. For some reason, I had it in my head until a few days ago that Halloween was on Saturday night, and not Friday night. Duh. So, a week ago, we made plans with Tim’s family for a bunch of them to come up Friday, for us to eat dinner, go to a movie (Fireproof), then they’d all spend the night (well, we’re having to send his parents to a new hotel near our house, since we only have one guest room!) and the guys would work on some stuff around here on Saturday. We have a window that Tim wants to replace, and so he’s been busy with getting together a new window, shims, screws, caulk, and some other stuff, as well as a new blind for that window.

So, anyway, it clicked a few days ago that Halloween is tonight, Friday, and not Saturday. So, we won’t be here to hand out the mound of candy I’ve bought to all of the trick or treaters. I will hate not seeing our neighbor kids dressed up and giving them some candy. But, I guess there’s always next year!

  1. Dawn Said,

Oh my goodness! What are you going to do with all that candy now?! One year I had to pick up a friend at the airport on Halloween. I had been handing out candy until I had to leave at which point I set the bowl on the steps with a note that said to take some but not to be greedy. I figured the first group of kids that came through would empty the bowk but oh well… When I got back, the bowk was about 2/3 empty & I was stunned. My neighbors said that they watched groups of kids approach the door, read the sign & take a couple pieces. Who knew that the “honor system” would really work?!

  2. Dawn Said,

Oh and yes, I do know how to spell BOWL. =P

  3. Stace Said,

Dawn – we’re going to try that. We’re going to put the bowl out front with a note. I have one kid that lives a street over that will probably take the entire thing, him and his “posse”. Ugh. I’m hoping the honor system works here otherwise though!

  4. JEN Said,

More candy for you and Tim and Beau….lol…

  5. Simply Dawn Said,

We were are we don’t get kids coming by but we did have Patt’s newphews come by last night to get their treats. (they did trick or truck at the churches)

But I think Halloween has been confussing for some. Some had it last night, some are doing it tonight and I’ve hard of others tomorrow night. So it’s hard keeping up with who, what, when and where this year!

Hope you guys have a great weekend. We have another beautiful weekend in store for us.

  6. annie Said,

I want to see that movie too!

  7. Karen Said,

You must feel drained after three days of jury duty. And then to have to think about those awful cases. I hope you enjoy the weekend, enjoy your family and take some time for yourself. Oh, and grab a handful of that candy before you give it all away!

  8. Lauren@Baseballs&Bows Said,

I am so glad you didn’t have to sit on those juries! Those would have been difficult!

Enjoy your weekend, and enjoy all that candy!

  9. Heidi Said,

I’m glad you didn’t have to be on a trial. Those sounded like very bad cases.

I hope you have a good weekend.

  10. mamichelle Said,

    Oooh, lots of leftovers!! LOL

    Have a great time!

  11. kim Said,

What terrible cases to sit on if you had been called! I have sat on only 1 jury–a very lame domestic violence case that basically just clogged up the system–and then I have been called to serve 1 other time but was never seated. My husband gets called almost every year. This past spring he had to report for a really HUGE case–biggest in the Seattle area in years. They started with a pool of a thousand potentials. Kerry’s final number was in the 200’s and thankfully didn’t have to serve. The trial lasted for over a month and still ended in a hung jury!

By the way, I love your new look!! It is beautiful and also, Happy Birthday. It sounds like you were treated like a queen–as it should be–on your day! We just got new phones too, but not fancy Iphones, that is for sure. 😉
Hope you have a wonderful weekend with all your family and that fall visits you again real soon.
    *smiles*
    Kim

  12. Barb @ A Chelsea Morning Said,

Kids are amazing. Rob and I were both really amazed Friday night that every single child who came to our door said thank you. After experiencing that, I’m not surprised that Dawn’s honor system worked.

You must be so relieved you weren’t chosen to sit in on either of those trials. I don’t think I could handle the photos either. It’s a shame it took up three days of your time though.

  13. Maria Said,

Yeah for you doing your civic duty! Did you get lots of reading done during the down time? We only had about 8 kids come by for candy. Way too much left over here! I’m hoping my sons finish it off today because I sure have had more than my share already.

  14. Gail Said,

I hope you got to see the movie! How did putting the candy out work out?
I’m not sure I’ll ever get caught up, with blogs or anything else around here!

  15. Kara Said,

Hope you had a good Halloween and I am glad you didn’t have to serve on a murder trial jury. I can’t even imagine how horrible that would be.
