I have “acquired” a few books in the last month or so. I was pleasantly surprised to find some good Christian fiction at Walmart, of all places. I came home one week from grocery shopping with these three books (and yes, they did fit in with my groceries in my three reusable shopping bags!):
I also made it to a local library sale in May – I just love going to the book sales at the library! I live between two good branches, and between them, they have 3 or 4 book sales a year. They are spread out too, one every 3 or 4 months. I don’t NEED any more books. I haven’t read the dozens that I have bought and are sitting on my bookshelves. If you look at my LibraryThing account, you’ll see over 60 books tagged with TBR – to be read. What’s more, I am about out of bookshelf space, and have taken to stacking them on the floor in corners, next to my nightstand, etc. 🙂
However, I can’t resist. I got all eight of these books for $4.50:
I will read them, and more than likely, my sister Gail will read most of them. After that, I’m still undecided about the whole PaperbackSwap or BookMooch type thing. If you use one of these programs, do you like it? Is it worth the effort and expense to mail them? And mostly – are books like the second stack, those from a library, that still have several stickers affixed to them as well as the library info stamped on an inside page of the book, are they eligible for PaperbackSwap? Do they need to be in more pristine condition? Three of the four larger trade size books in this photo are from their library shelves, and have stickers (with big X’s on several of them), as well as labels with bar codes and other things affixed to them. It doesn’t bother me at all, but I didn’t know if they would be a good candidate for the PBS type program. Inquiring minds want to know, so leave me a comment if you have any feedback! 😀
I don’t use any of those programs… I check out books at the library, but haven’t been reading much these days.
Ooh, ooh, I’m interested in what you think of Miss Match! That is a book that I’m interested in reading at some point.
Life Support by Gerritsen is good, I’ve read that one.
I haven’t used BookMooch at all but I used to do PaperbackSwap quite frequently. I think it’s okay on the stickers – I think you can mention the condition on the site. People know that they’re not brand-new. It is a pretty good program – a book for the cost of postage is pretty cheap. I haven’t been doing it much lately but it is worth the price – though not if you have to go to the post office a lot – that gets to be a drag.
Like Annie, I also just check books out at the library. I almost never buy a book. With all the books I read, I’d go broke! Even with using PB Swap or something like that.
Like Twiga I am also interested to hear what you think of Miss Match. It’s on my TBR list.
I wish so much I could sit and read books. I will read one book a year isnt that sad? Your books look interesting though,
I love getting good deals on books! I never thought about the library book sale I’ll have to keep that in mind 🙂
I can’t believe how inexpensive your library book sales are. Ours are definitely not that cheap.
What a fun looking stack of books. In my opinion you can NEVER have too many books–just visit my book blog and see my weekly geeks post from last Saturday–oh my-do I have stacks. Hope you like all the ones you got–I think one of the libraries by me might be having a sale tomorrow but I don’t dare bring any new ones into the house right now–we are trying to de-clutter do to the room switcharoo we did last weekend.
Just wanted to say that I have purchased re-usable shopping bags recently also and really like them-they have great handles. The city of Seattle’s mayor was talking about a instituting a law which would ban paper and plastic bags!
Oh, and one more thing. I belong to paperbackswap.com and have always loved it. But now I that I am working I have a hard time keeping up with filling requests as it involves a trip to the post office and the lines in our post offices up here are always L…O…N…G!
Happy Weekend to you and big smiles!
Kim
If it makes you feel any better, I’d be thrilled if my TBR pile only had 60 in it! Nothing quite as fun as a good library sale, is there? Our library has 2 each year, but the spring one is always much better than the fall one.
I don’t think the library stickers would be a problem at PBS. Books with missing front covers and books with water damage aren’t allowed, but otherwise just so the book is in good condition it should be fine. If someone requests a book from you that you’re a little worried about, I think you can e-mail them about it before sending it out. And some people who have special requests, like books from non-smoking households or something like that, can make that as part of the terms. So I’m guessing if they don’t want ex-library books they could simply state that. I’ve gotten a couple of library books with stickers before, and I sure didn’t mind.
I use both services – and the stickers aren’t a problem. Just mention it in your “book condition” notes. I have to admit that although BookMooch is less structured, I have a LOT more action on there. So I would actually recommend it over Paperback Swap. I haven’t had a swap on PBS in a long time… and I’m active on BookMooch weekly. Let me know if you have any questions about them – I LOVE those sites! I have a HUGE stack of books waiting to be read. 🙂
I forgot to tell you it’s fine with me to swipe my “review of library books” idea. In fact I think it would be fun to see your posts about it. The only downside is I still have several books to read from my last visit and it seems like I’m never going to get to post about it. Maybe I shouldn’t check out so many books at once. 🙂
Oooh, new books! And how fun that I will get to read them too! You know eventually I’ll want to read most of them.
I have not heard of book mooch but was interested to see what your comments said…..have you decided anything definite? I could probably add a few to your stack to trade.
I wish my library had all the books that I would want to read but they don’t so I do buy them from time to time as well…but much prefer to check them out if I can!
PBS is such an awesome program, isn’t it?! Your books will be just fine for it. Just mention their condition when you post them. I have received “library” books in the past. I’ve been a member of PBS for two years I think, or longer, I love it!!
My local library always has books on sale and I rarely make it out without a few bargains 🙂
