My sister Gail was cleaning out some stuff at her house recently and ran across two books that had my name on them. I think they were in her girls room, so I probably loaned them to her daughters to read when they were younger. One of them wasn’t as familiar, but when I saw this one, I immediately remembered this book!

The Finches Fabulous Furnace

I even found a link to it, here at Amazon.com. I would have thought this thing was out of print or unavailable, as it says in the front that it is part of the “Weekly Reader Children’s Book Club.”

Anyway, seeing this book and remembering I liked it is really a feat in and of itself. My memory is atrocious, especially in regards to anything from my childhood, even through high school. I don’t remember people, places, things I did, places I went, etc. So for me to remember this book means something 🙂 I’m going to reread it soon and see if I enjoy as much as a forty-something year old as I did a whatever-year old. The book is dated 1971, but I’m not sure when I read it. I hope it’s good 🙂

How about you – do you have a favorite book from childhood? One you remember reading and loving as a child, or one you read to your own kids? That’s today’s Question of the Day, so leave me a comment and let me know 🙂

I was really surprised when I saw the books here with your name on them, I have no idea how they got here! Like you said, I guess you could have loaned them to the kids.
And of course you know, I loved Nancy Drew books from childhood! We can look next time you’re here at mine, but I don’t think any of these have your name on them. 🙁
Kathryn wants to have all my old ones but I don’t think I’m ready to get rid of them yet……but I probably need an idea about storing/displaying them better!

  2. Dawn Said,

I don’t really remember it but I remember the story about it. When I was 3, I got a book in my Easter basket called “The Egg Book” and I wanted it read to me all.the.time. I drove my father crazy. I wanted it all Spring… and Summer… and Autumn… Even at Christmas. He would hide the book in all sorts of places, but I would find it. He would buy me new books & still it was the only one I wanted. And then one day it disappeared & we couldn’t find the book. When the snow melted that next Spring, my father actually *buried* the book to escape it! LOL!

  3. jen Said,

A favorite book? As a child? Hmmmmm. I really liked all the Little House series……I as obsessed with Laura Ingles…lol.

  4. Lauren@Baseballs&Bows Said,

As a small child I liked Where the Wild Things Are. I also loved Charlotte’s Web, all the Ramona books and Little House books in early elementary school. Around 4th grade, I loved The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.

  5. deb Said,

My favorite childhood book is “The Velveteen Rabbit”. I love it so much that Scott bought me a “vintage” reprint just a few years ago because I didn’t have a copy. I also loved the Bobsey Twins, Trixie Belden, and Annette (Funicello) series. Nancy Drew, of course. And anything to do with horses. I was obsessed with horses ;~)
My mother used to buy me one Little Golden Book every Saturday when I went grocery shopping with her. That was my treat each week. I think she still has them all!

  6. Karen Said,

My favorites were Charlotte’s Web, the Nancy Drew series and another series about a nurse, Cherry Ames. I also loved the original Bambi by Felix Salten. Recently, I re-read A Lantern in Her Hand, the story of a pioneer woman. I was delighted to find out that there’s a sequel and also other books by the author.

  7. Debi Said,

Oh Stacy, how cool…I’m so glad you have your book again! What a treasure!

I had this huge set of books as a kid called The Children’s Hour (I think there’s like 16 big books in the whole set), and they were loaded with tons and tons and tons of stories. They contained my favorite story as a little one–The Velveteen Rabbit. Annie has the set now. She also has my Little House books, but I never really loved them all that much as a kid. My favorite pre-teen book had to have been Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. Bet I read that book ten times as a kid. I loved From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, too. Spent a lot of time daydreaming about hiding away and living in a museum 🙂 To this day, I’ve never read a Nancy Drew, but I loved Trixie Belden!

I’m awful….I just don’t remember!! I used to read to my boys when they were little and I used to like, “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein and also those little critters – one in particular was “I Just Forgot” and one more that comes to mind is A Boy for a Dog (or something like that).

  9. Kim Said,

What a treasure! I have been re-reading several books that were my childhood favorites as part of various book challenges I have joined this year. Some of my favorites:
    The Crystal Tree
    Harriet the Spy
    Island of the Blue Dolphins
    A Wrinkle in Time
    Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
    The Hobbit
The Little House on the Praire series

Help……… I can’t stop listing! I hope you enjoy your treasure as much as you did as a child.
    *smiles*
    Kim

  10. Shawna Said,

I remember having the Boxcar Children (at least the first book) read to me as a child, and I loved it. I also loved Babaar the Elephant and would check that book out over and over in elementary school. Plus I loved all the Ramona Quimby books.

  11. Lynne Said,

Books from my childhood? Let’s see, what books were written in hieroglyphics?

I loved Nancy Drew books. That’s about all I remember reading. When my girls were babies, I bought Little Golden Books for them. I must have had a hundred or more. Our favorite was THE TINY TAWNY KITTEN. I wish I still had those books. I don’t have a clue what happened to them.

  12. twiga92 Said,

I liked reading the Bobbsey Twins books when I was young. Also the Little House books and Anne of Green Gables. Also books by Enid Blyton – St. Clare twins. Not sure if these count as books – they’re more comic books, but I really liked the Tintin comics growing up.

  13. DawnK Said,

The Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. We have a well-loved, and read, boxed set of them, but I’m ready to buy a new set, just to keep them nice! My girls read them all and I read them again! It was different reading them as an adult and I’m glad I don’t have to work that hard, just to survive!

Also, the Marguerite Henry horse books: Misty of Chincoteague, etc. I loved them as a kid and encouraged my kids to read them, too.

Nancy Drew is another one, although I didn’t go crazy over them as a kid and my kids read some, but didn’t go crazy, either! LOL!
