Are you old enough to remember this old nursery rhyme? I think I remember my grandmother telling it to me…
Sing a song of sixpence a pocket full of rye,
Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie.
When the pie was opened the birds began to sing,
Oh wasn’t that a dainty dish to set before the king?
So, I thought I’d steal that nursery rhyme for the title, as my sister Gail does at her blog, More Than a Song. We’ve been having tons of blackbirds here lately (a lot more than 24, more like 124 at a time!) I must admit – I love birds. I have several birds feeders and a suet feeder and I love to watch the birds in my backyard. We have a lot of cardinals, wrens, mockingbirds, sparrows, finches, chickadees, woodpeckers and other backyard birds. I saw a robin on the way to church last Sunday, but I haven’t seen any in my yard yet. Hopefully, soon! Lately, we’ve had tons of blackbirds. One day a week or so ago, I was inside the house, with the TV on, and I could hear them outside. I got my camera and got a couple of photos as some of them were moving over. It’s funny how they move in such a swarm:
Believe me, the photos don’t do them justice! They were everywhere. I think they are my least favorite bird.
So, how about a Question of the Day: Do you have a bird feeder in your yard? Do you enjoy feeding the birds and watching them? And, are you nerdy like me and like to take photos of birds?! 🙂
Have a great day!
We have a big bird feeder in the back yard, and Dom has put 2 little birdhouses in the trees in front. We seem to get a few birds in the back, along with a few chipmunks and squirrels. Maggie loves to watch them. She’ll sit in the yard and stare for the longest time, then all of a sudden she’ll charge. Usually when there’s a chipmunk there – she doesn’t seem to bother the birds.
We’ve had a bird nest in the tree next to our back porch for the past couple of years. I don’t know what kind of bird, but the eggs were blue and speckled. The mama bird flew down and pecked at Maggie once when Maggie was sitting at the base of the tree. We just call them Maggie-birds.
We don’t usually have big flocks of birds like t hat. If we do, it is swallows.
I do have bird feeders but I have trouble keeping them filled. They are right outside the kitchen window and it is fun to watch them. My grandparents love birds and that is where i get it from.
Well you’ll already know my answers! But here they are:
I have a squirrel proof bird feeder in the tree by my kitchen window and usually get lots of cardinals and other birds there. Don gave that feeder to me years ago one Christmas. I have that suet feeder, small simple hanging thing, in the crepe myrtle tree right off my back patio windows/door, and I told you no birds had found it in forever! Until I noticed Sunday that the evil blackbirds had found it, I do NOT like them at all! And I bought another feeder while shopping with you last week 🙂 and it’s just like yours b/c y’all always say I want to be “just like you” when I grow up! I got that seed put in it yesterday and don’t think I’ve seen any birds back to it or the suet one since then.
I have been known to take a few pictures of birds too, but I don’t have a fancy camera like yours.
You are so not nerdy…..we have the same amount of birds up here in Ky. They go from the back yard to the front. I think they here lil Miller beating on the window at them. LOL. I dont have my feeders hung up yet but we have pie plates outside (disposable ones) and they eat from those. I love to feed them….we had 4 Cardinals out there this morning. I hate it when they get too close to my deck though,..the poop.
Those pictures make me feel like I’m in a Hitchcock movie.
LOL Perfect question for me! I’ve been taking pictures of birds in my backyard all morning! I caught the first red-winged black birds of the season, Mr. and Mrs. Cardinal, our friend the Downy woodpecker, bunches of blackbirds (boy, do they ever like popcorn!) mourning doves, starlings, song sparrows and house sparrows.
I have several feeders in my backyard and I cater to squirrels and other critters as well! I have a couple suet feeders, a sunflower/peanut feeder, and several other feeders as well. then I have a couple that are just open for the squirrels. I give them apple cores, popcorn, and all the bread that is going to get thrown out. It’s guaranteed to be enjoyed!

That is a lot of birds! I don’t have a feeder, but my mom does. She loves to watch birds!
No bird feeder for me since I live in an apartment. But I did want to say that that second photo is very eerie looking!
Whoah, that’s a big huge swarm of birds. They do that here, too, and it always kinda creeps me out.
We have robins! You will probably have them soon. I’ve noticed them for a couple of weeks now. I also have noticed hearing birds singing over the past couple of weeks. It’s funny how I never notice the absence of bird songs during the winter, but when they come back, I definitely notice the new sound…it’s such a fresh, happy sound!
We have a bird feeder in our front yard. It’s a special treat when a cardinal or woodpecker comes to visit. But mostly, the squirrels use it. LOL
Matt loves bird feeders. We have several and he keeps them full. He’s always calling me to the window to see a bird 🙂
Ooooh, that’s creepy! It reminds me of the movie The Birds! I get them outside my office window at times but not like that! I get the creepy hawks!!
No, I don’t have any bird feeders. My hubby likes them but never got one because of the squirrels and chipmunks (we have tons).
We have a bird bath in the yard and I love to see the bird splashing around in it. I watch them through binoculars and they’re so darn cute. We also have several bird houses and get two or three families a season that come and go. They’re right outside the screened in porch and it’s fun to listen to the babies and see the moms and dads come and go. I don’t have any bird feeders, but that would be nice. Unfortunately, my dog is quite the hunter and somehow gets a bird or two every spring, so I hate to encourage them. I don’t know how she does it.
My dad is a bird watcher and we grew up with feeders in the yard, going on hikes and driving for miles to see the sandhill cranes that come through Nebraska each year. I love the big birds — hawks, eagles. We get lots of them around here. But, no cardinals and I think they are the prettiest birds:)
Hi Stacy–
First of all, while your picture of the black birds is awesome, it also creeps me out. I think it is a Hitchcock thing!! 😉
Bird feeders…hmmm. No. As I commented on your blog a while ago when you posted your cardinal in the snow picture that we don’t have any pretty birds up here. The prettiest is maybe a blue jay, but they are rare and are a very mean bird. The most common around here are ugly crows and starlings. Once in a while we get tiny little wrens but they are pretty tempermental where they will make a nest. The other common bird around here is the robin which I don’t really like either.
So, you see, bird watching up here does not hold much appeal. Plus, bird feeders around here just attract squirrels, chipmunks and the occasional rat!!!
Keep posting your pretty birds though and I will live vicariously through you.
*smiles* 🙂
Kim
