Light on Snow by Anita ShreveI finished my third book in Annie’s “What’s In a Name Challenge” a couple of days ago. This is a book that I picked up on a bargain table at Barnes and Noble quite a while back, so it was good to finally get it off my TBR shelf and actually read!

I must admit, I was a bit worried about reading this book. The only other book I’ve read by Shreve (that I can remember) is “The Pilot’s Wife”. A couple of tidbits of trivia about this – it’s one of only a couple of Oprah’s book club books that I’ve read. The most notable bit of trivia is that, as best I can remember, “A Pilot’s Wife” is the very first book I ever ordered from Amazon.com. If I remember, it was back in 1999 and I had been thinking about ordering from Amazon and finally did and ordered this book.

Ok, back to the current book. I didn’t just love the other book I read by Anita Shreve, but the blurb on the back of Light on Snow looked promising. I won’t type it all up here, but you can read the blurb or reviews here at Amazon. I worried for nothing, though, because I really enjoyed this book. It hooked me right at the very beginning and it was one of those “hard to put down” kind of books for me. I read it very quickly and was very happy with it! I enjoyed the writing, the beauty of what she was describing, the characters and how she developed them, and the overall plot. Very engaging book 🙂

Have you read any of her books? If so, do you have one to recommend? As I said, I wasn’t thrilled with “The Pilot’s Wife” and so I stayed away from her books for a long time. I know I’ve read some reviews and blurbs on other blogs about books of her that are good, and not so good. If you have read one by Anita Shreve that you liked, leave me a comment and let me know. I imagine my local library has most all, if not all, of her books. Thanks!

So, for the record, I’ve completed 3 of the 6 books I picked for the “What’s In a Name” challenge. As far as this year goes, I’ve read 11 books, for a total of 3,571 pages. Up next is “Playing for Pizza” by John Grisham. I’ve read a lot of girlie books lately, so it’s time to switch it up a bit. 🙂

Happy Reading!

  1. Lynne Said,

Stay away from THE LAST TIME THEY MET. I HATED that book. No, hated is not strong enough. When I finished I threw it against the wall (had to repaint) then into the trash. I’m not thrilled with Anita Shreve, but SEA GLASS was pretty good.

  2. Susan Said,

I personally loved “Fortune’s Rocks” by Anita Shreve. Also, I’ve got “A Wedding in December” on my TBR shelf, and I’ve heard it’s really good. I am glad you liked “Light on Snow” – a thumbs-up from you makes me want to put it on my list of books-to-get-later. 🙂

  3. Heidi Said,

I’ve never read one of her books. That is so funny that you remember the first book you ordered on Amazon.

  4. Karen Said,

I didn’t care much for Pilot’s Wife and, like you, it took me a long time to read another one of her books. When I did, it was Light on Snow and I really like it! I think I enjoy books that have winter settings and where the author can truly capture what winter feels like. I loved Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton — it’s one of my all-time favorite books. Loved Snow Falling on Cedars. I’m not sure if I’d try another of Shreve’s books or not. It would have to come highly recommended.

  5. Lauren@Baseballs&Bows Said,

We were literally on the same page! I read this book last week as well, and I really enjoyed it. I, too, was hooked from the beginning. I liked Nicky so much. Also, It was refreshing to read a secular author without the bad language and other scenes. Glad you enjoyed it!

  6. booklogged Said,

I don’t think I’ve read anything by Anita Shreve. Putting this one on my list.

  7. Gail Said,

I haven’t read anything by her, maybe because I heard you say something about the other book…but really can’t remember why I’ve not read anything by her. It’s good to know that this one is better and I liked Lauren’s comment about it not having so much bad language and stuff.

  8. kathy m Said,

Isn’t that funny, but I’m not a big Anita Shreve fan either. I don’t think I read the Pilots Wife, but another of her books about a couple with their child on a boat. I hated it.

  9. mamichelle Said,

Funny, I tried one of her books before, A Wedding in December, and gave up on it. I don’t like her writing style. Anyway, someone on SBA just recommended and sent me, Body Surfing, and I loved it!

I may have to try this one too. I’ve heard a lot of good about it.

I’m currently reading, Eat, Love, Pray. I’m not thrilled but I don’t have anything else right now.

  10. Jill Said,

I guess I’m in the minority here as far as Anita Shreve. She’s one of my very favorite authors, though there are a couple of her books that weren’t stellar (like the Pilot’s Wife). Her earlier writing is better. My favorite is her first novel, “Eden Close”. I hope you consider reading it at some time. I don’t think you’ll be sorry. Another I really liked is “Strange Fits of Passion.” I have Light on Snow and Body Surfing on my bookshelf waiting….

  11. Kara Reed Said,

Can’t say I ‘ve read any of hers except “The Pilot’s Wife”…glad you enjoyed this one and good job on keeping ahead on the challenge!

  12. Debi Said,

I’ve never read anything by her…but just like you I picked this one up off the bargain table at B&N because it sounded good. It’s my weather book for Annie’s challenge, too. 🙂 I’m so relieved to hear you enjoyed this one…makes me confident that I will, too.
