Ugh.

The proverbial good news – my laptop arrived home today, from the repair center. The video was out and they apparently replaced the LCD bezel (whatever that is), and the system board. It arrived safe and sound, and appears to work.

The proverbial bad news – for some unapparent reason, they felt the need to wipe my hard drive and restore the PC to “system defaults”. Which means like new out of the box. So, all of my programs, all of my data – GONE. For no apparent reason. I can understand that they might have needed to load new drivers for a different video card, but come on. They erased everything. My programs, my emails, my photos, my documents, everything for the last 10 months. All gone.

I am SO not a happy camper right now. It’s going to take me dozens of man-hours to recreate most of this. Some of it I won’t be able to get back because I didn’t have it all backed up. I had the biggest stuff (photos, etc), but because it broke just a day or so into the new year, I didn’t have the previous month’s worth of stuff backed up. Or my email folders, which is my bad, but still. Who thinks to backup their email folders on a regular basis. So, if you’ve emailed me in the last 10 months, sorry. It’s gone too.

Ugh. Send happy thoughts my way, please. I desperately need them. 🙂

I think I better go find some chocolate, before I get started. It’s all gone. All of it.

Oh Stacy, I’m so sorry! That’s awful. Ours crashed once and we lost everything so I know just how you feel. Hugs!!

  3. Rach (Heart of Rachel) Said,

I’m glad your laptop is fixed but I’m sorry about your lost files. Wishing you better days ahead my friend. Take care.

  4. Lynne Said,

That’s too bad, Stacy. I’d be miserable if my entire hard drive was wiped out. That reminds me to back up my Quicken data and my pictures.

  5. Heidi Said,

You’ve got to be kidding me! That is TERRIBLE!!! They should have at least warned you!

  6. Desert Songbird Said,

I feel your pain. That has happened to me in the past, and I was NOT a happy camper.

    Buttheads.

  7. Stacy aka Vaders Mom Said,

They just don’t think like that. It blows my mind.

    Sending you lots of cyber-hugs!!

  8. Melody Said,

Aww…that sucks, Stacy! I can imagine what a pain that would be. Sending you lots of positive vibes!!!

  9. BookGal Said,

That happened to us recently. We now have an automatic backup attached that backs up the whole system every day. More money but totally worth the piece of mind.

  10. annie Said,

I feel your pain. I lost all my old emails. I lost so much stuff. I was able to recover some from my old hard drive (off my dead laptop)… but it’s so frustrating! I just really hope (and pray) that this computer will live a long full life and go on to live in the arms of one of my children when I determine the need for an upgrade. amen.
Sending good thoughts your way (((hugs)))

  11. Debi Said,

Oh Stacy, I want to cry with you! That just stinks! But I’m sending you oodles and oodles of positive vibes…and hoping that it all goes as smoothly as possible!

Oh my word. That is terrible. Hugs to you!

  13. twiga Said,

Oh that just royally stinks! Blech, blech, blech!

  14. Dawn Said,

Oh Stace. =( I am so sorry. That really stinks. After my computer crach last year, I got an external hard drive & that’s where all my important files are now. That way if my computer goes SPLAT, my stuff should all still be safe.

  15. Sadie Said,

That does indeed royally stink. I wish I knew some tricks to tell you.

If nothing else, your recent adventures in computing have taught me to back up everything. Frequently.

  16. Laura Said,

    *hugs* It’s awful.

  17. Fresh Girl Said,

    Stacy, I am SO sorry! I definitely know the pain though — remember? I lost EVERYTHING (because I was silly and backed up nothing) when my Macbook had a complete hard drive failure last August. The techie guys wiped it clean when they sent it back to me. Made me sick every time I thought about it. Nothing to do but pick up and go forward, backing up religiously from now on. {{{{{Stacy}}}}

  18. Barb @ A Chelsea Morning Said,

Oh no Stacy. My worst nightmare, losing everything it’s taken so long to put on my computer. I’m completely shocked that they did save it all to disc for you before they took it back to factory condition. I truly feel bad for you.

  19. Gail Said,

Ugh, I’m so sorry! No fun………and I’ll have some of those cd’s you need for itunes the next time I’m there, just remind me to bring them! Can’t help too much on emails, except to try to find the recipes I might have sent you to send again.
