QOTD – Nativity

Today’s Christmas-themed “Question of the Day” is about nativities. Do you have one that you put out every year? Or more than one? Is it a small one indoors, or a large one outdoors? Does it have any special meaning or memories for you?

The reason I ask this question is because I do have a small nativity that I love and put out every year. My mother-in-law has wanted to visit the Holy Land her entire life, and she did go (prior to 9-11) when Tim and I were first married. She got each of us an olive wood Nativity in Bethlehem. It is all hand-carved and it’s just so special to us because she bought it for us in the Holy Land. I had never had a nativity before, and I love this one. I secretly wish for the Willow Tree nativity, but I just hate to ask for it because it is so expensive. I know that one year I will finally break down and tell Tim that I want it, and I know that he’d buy it if I really wanted it. Luckily, I don’t have room for it in this house, so it will have to be when we move to a bigger house. Whew! Anyway, I love my nativity and put it out every year:

So, how about you… do you have a nativity at your home? Or some other really special decoration that you put out that has special meaning for you? Leave me a comment and let me know!

  1. Fresh Girl Said,

We have several nativities (I’ll probably have photos of them up for BooMama’s Christmas Tour of Homes on Monday), but like you, I really want a Willow Tree one. All of ours are indoors — I don’t much like outdoor ones — and they range from a very tiny one in Thomas’ room to a pretty good sized one in the living room. All totaled, we probably have five or so sitting out, including a fabric, stuffed one that my mom made years ago. : )

I LOVE your olive wood nativity! What a special gift.

  2. Cam Said,

I love that nativity set. How special! I actually remember it from last year.

We have one that is from the “Jane” collection. The pieces are really artsy and are sculpted from resin (I think). They’re beautiful! Philip’s sister gave it to us a couple of pieces at a time, over a period of years after we were married. We now have the full set and I think it’s really special. Sadly, I haven’t managed to get it out and set up yet this year. I’m so behind. But its box is sitting out and I’m hoping to get to it tonight or tomorrow.

  3. jen Said,

We have a nice one I bought for me and Scott a long time ago……then we bought Miller one this year….it is a toy one….he plays with it all the time. He carries Baby Jesus around kissing it…so sweet.

  4. mamichelle Said,

I love your nativity set! I do have one and it’s one my aunt made a very long time ago. It’s so cute but I don’t have any space that I can put it up. It would need a table somewhere so I haven’t put it up in two yrs.

  5. theresa Said,

    A very special navity scene.
I have 2 one is a very simple one with just Mary, Joseph and Jesus and a star that my dad made.
The other is a barn my dad made, then the three wise men came from my parents house, Mary, Joseph, and Jesus came from another navity scene, then I have glass figurines of animals from my childhood, a dog that looks like lassie, a cat with its tail missing so there is a piece of straw in it, a horse with a leg missing, donkeys, and camels, It takes up some space, but it is really fun to put together each year- It is the first thing I do. If we go away for the holidays and I don’t decorate much, I always at least put this up.

  6. Kim Said,

What a beautiful set you have Stacy…truly a treasure to keep forever! I answered your question, but in a blog post on my blog. Mine is no where as unique as your set!

  7. Kim Said,

I love your nativity Stacy! We have a couple of sets. One is made of chunky pieces of wood. We got it when Brenna was little so she could handle it without fear of breaking it. I don’t have either out this year with Stephen away. I was afraid to get the totes off the top shelf of the garage. I’m too clumsy to do ladders with him gone for so long.

    Have a good weekend.

  8. deb Said,

Stacy, I do not have a nativity scene although I’d love to have one someday. I have several “special” Christmas decorations that I set out for display or hang on our tree. The most cherished ones are the ones my kids made when they were little and the ones given to them as presents when they were babies. I also have crocheted snowflakes that my mother made for me and my sister several years ago that I always hang on my tree. Your nativity is beautiful!

  9. Sadie Said,

I don’t have one. My mom had a Precious Moments one that I loved, and every year we’d add something to it– a shepherd or an angel.

I would like to have one, and I like Willow Tree… hmmm.

  10. Gail Said,

I have a Fontanini one, and I love it! My MIL gave it to us, it was indestructable for the kids and it’s still being used. I think I could covet that Willow Tree one too! We did have some small ones that the kids played with but I think some of the pieces of those are gone.

  11. Maria Said,

We have one nativity set that we bought up in the mountains when we first got married nearly 20 years ago. Hubby sets it up each year for us and Baby Jesus goes in on Christmas morning.
