Stunned. Simply Stunned.

USM

Tim and I are both simply stunned, outraged and speechless right now. Our university and alma mater has just fired their football coach. He’s been our coach for 17 years and is one of the longest tenured coaches in the country. He’s ONLY posted 14 consecutive winning seasons. We’re ONLY going to a bowl game right before Christmas – our ninth bowl game in ten years. And they fired him. We’re both just really upset right now. What on earth are they thinking? Bonehead athletic directors and presidents. Utterly idiotic.

Ok, I know most of you are not football fans, but we are in our house. We pull for USM and the New Orleans Saints year in and year out and have for eons. It’s hard to see them lose or not play as we’d like, but we stick with our teams. For them to fire our beloved coach is just unheard of to us right now.

And on top of that, our senior senator from Mississippi, Trent Lott, resigned this morning. What is up today? Ugh.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled blogging. 😀

  1. Gail Said,

WHAT? I haven’t heard that and why would they do that when they’ve done so well? I knew they’d gotten a bowl bid so I figured they wouldn’t be in that firing mode that went on Saturday….it’s not like Ole Miss where they probably should have fired him but Bower, no way.

And I heard about 6ish this morning about Lott, am VERY bummed about that too!

  2. Heidi Said,

They do silly things like that sometimes. Like how they fired that Yankees coach. I’m not a fan of the yankees, but seriously, he was a good coach.

    Sorry!

  3. Laura Said,

Let’s trade scenarios…. we have been waiting for our coach to be fired for YEARS. He is awful and we are spitting mad. If you can get your coach back, and get rid of ours, we all win!! 😉 *hugs*

  4. Claire Said,

Um…yeah! Super surprised. I don’t know what they were thinking. Maybe they just wanted someone new to begin a new era in Southern football…hopefully it will continue in the winning ways.

  5. Sonya Said,

It is surprising. I can’t believe they haven’t fired Phil Fulmer yet. He’s had some mediocre seasons and usually after a couple of those, the coach is chucked. I’m not going to complain too much though because we are playing LSU this weekend in the SEC championship game! Wooo hooo! Sometimes a coach is ousted when he really shouldn’t be but there’s nothing we can do. It stinks for y’all because this guy seems like a great coach.

  6. Amy Said,

I have to admit I’m not into football even though we were Superbowl champs last year, but this is just so wrong! Coach worked his little tail off and sounds like he did an outstanding job. Doesn’t deserve to be treated that way. I am so sorry. I’m sure it hurts.

  7. Kim Said,

Oh what a bummer day you have had Stacey! I think there are plenty of people who would like to see the coach of our school get fired! (UW Huskies)

I am bummed right along with you about Trent Lott. I haven’t heard any of the details yet why he resigned–but it is definitely a loss for all of us. 🙁

    Hope your Tuesday is happier–
    *hugs*
    Kim

  8. Coach J Said,

I didn’t realize USM had fired their coach. I was stuck on Coach O from Ole Miss-he got Croomed 🙂 Anyway….who knows why ADs do what they do? Sometimes, it just doesn’t make sense! Wonder who they’re looking at hiring?
And, I’m wondering about Trent Lott myself. There’s got to be a reason behind this. Senators and Reps don’t just retire. Being in the public is too much of who they are. I’m wondering if it’s health related, or if something’s going on up in Washington, and he was pressured into resigning. Haven’t heard anything about that pressure, but it would make sense. One thing is for sure, time will tell!

  9. mamichelle Said,

Wow, what a shame after all those years!!!

  10. Michael-Lover of Amy Said,

There are a lot of job openings for college coaches this week. I was surprised that GA Tech fired Chan Gailey as he has lead them to 6 consecutive winning seasons and 6 bowl games. However he has not been able to beat the University of Georgia in the 6 years he has been head coach.

I am happy with my colleges coach. I expected UCF to be 4-8, maybe 5-7 this year, instead we are 9-3, with only one of those loses being unwarranted (ECU after we had 5 turnovers in the 3rd quarter). We only lost to Texas by 3, and we got killed by USF. We are playing in our second conference championship game in the three years we’ve been in CUSA, and hosting it in our brand new on-campus stadium.

BTW – our coach is former GA Tech and former Notre Dame (for 36 hours) coach George O’Leary.

  11. Sadie Said,

It’s in the air, I guess. You know how they get– maybe they want to win the C-USA championship or something. Some other sort of goal he hasn’t met. I wonder what’s up, I bet they have someone already set to come in. I am surprised that Memphis hasn’t gotten rid of Tommy West, but I don’t think they have the dedication to the program necessary to bring someone new in– and he did pull us back from 2-4 to finish 7-5, so I’m not complaining.

  12. Simply Dawn Said,

Yesterday was full of surprises. The big talk around here was all the football firings. I was shocked about USM….not so suprised by Ole Miss though….

And the news abot Senator Lott was an even bigger shock. Didn’t see that one coming at all. I really hate to hear about that.

  13. Kara Reed Said,

The firing football coaches thing makes me ill…it seems if they lose a few games everyone starts screaming for a new coach. No loyalty, I tell ya! Although college football is big business anymore…I think it is sad. I think it sends a bad message to the 19 and 20 year old athletes who should be thinking about schoolwork instead of having everyone so focused on firing coaches.

  14. Fresh Girl Said,

That firing is a strange one, all right. I’m thrilled they kicked Orgeron loose — did you see that Ole Miss has hired Houston Nutt?! This has been the craziest football season, on the field and OFF! 😉
