Just a word to the wise… I thought I’d share some tidbits of wisdom here tonight.
Please note – if it’s late at night and you’re tired, and you happen to be plundering around on your Vista laptop, trying to find out why it keeps locking up and giving you a big ole blue screen… Do Not, I repeat, Do Not, go into Explorer and start looking around. If you did, you might mistake two entries for Music as a duplicate of one another. Not one being a folder and one being a Link or some such Vista nonsense. By deleting one, you are not cleaning up disk space. When it says you are deleting nearly 8 Gig worth of music, stop and do not click “OK”. When it then says that this is too much data to be placed in the Recycle Bin, do not click ok, allow, yes, proceed or enter. Because then you will erase every.single.entry in your iTunes library. And be sure to NOT try to hook up your iPod to said Vista laptop afterwards in order to try to sync it back. Because iTunes only works one way and you’ll overwrite your iPod with your newly zapped, empty, nada iTunes library.
Just saying… you might want to take note of this in the future.
Me, of course, I would never do this. I wouldn’t feel like a total eejit if I did do something like this. I would not have to dig out my (hopefully) old backup copy of iTunes and try to restore it. Because you know, I would never go nearly A YEAR without backing up iTunes. Not me.
It’s a good thing I can put my hands on all of the music I have purchased in the last 8-9 months. Of course, any of the free songs that I have downloaded would be gone. Because I wouldn’t think to back up those. Just saying.
OK, that concludes your Public Service Announcement for today.
P.S. Originally I planned to blog a bit about our weekend, but that’s just gonna have to wait. I seem to be really busy with life and not with taking or posting photographs over at my Project365 blog. I’m {gasp} over a week behind over there. At least I’m attempting to get something posted here every few days. Hopefully I’ll be able to catch up some soon. Have a great weekend! 😀
I’m so glad that you DIDN”T do that! That would have been horrible and cause you so much work to re-do everything.
Hope you had a wonderful weekend with family.
Okay, I’ll admit it. I did that. Once. Thank goodness the Kid kept a list of all the stuff he had on there and I got a larger hard drive to store them on.
And now we know why my February-purchased Vista laptop has been out of its case only a half dozen times. Just turning it on gives me hives…I’ve already had to use the Restore function once and that’s not a good sign. Oh…and did I mention I’m afraid to get an I-pod?
Sounds like you sure know alot about what NOT to do,
Myhusband once used my second backup disc for something- and it turned out that I needed it- that was over 13 years ago but I haven’t let him forget it yet 🙂
I’m sure that was a great feeling!
If you aren’t able to recover everything, let me know. One time my iTunes went wacky and lost everything, but Philip was able to download a program that recovered it all.
Oh yikes. That sounds really scary!!
I hope whoever DID do that gets back what he or she wants! BTW, I thought of you yesterday b/c we were in a store and saw Life is Good stuff. My mom asked me if I liked it and said yeah but I never have a chance to wear stuff like that. She thought it was cute, too. I told her that you liked it a lot! 🙂
Sorry about your music!!
Yikes! So sorry….hope to hear about the rest of your weekend soon!
*hugs*
Kim
How dreadful! Sorry to hear about your music.
Oh, no! I am so sorry. I once deleted a twelve page paper in college and had to start all over, so I understand the feeling of deleting something important to you! I hope things are looking better now. How frustrating!
Oh, bless your heart, woman. Does Tim have an ipod that still has music? If so, I can tell you how to save it. If not, I’ll send you an iTunes gift certificate for Christmas. 🙂
Oh no… I think I would just put my head down & cry. Or scream.
I’m sorry……..I’m afraid that might be due to me, asking you about itunes…..I’ll send you what I have that you had of mine, just let me know what they were!
I’ve heard nothing but scary things about Vista. Hubby won’t even install it on his laptop (which he bought just at the Vista changeover). I understand they’re offering the old operating system for anyone who wants to go back.
Okay, computer moron here didn’t actually understand half of what your DIDN’T do there…but I did understand the results of these NON-actions. Can I just say “That sucks!” So sorry, Stacy!
I’m just now getting around to commenting on this, but you are the second person I saw that day who had some kind of iTunes/iPod disaster.
