This N That

This N That

Let’s see, I haven’t written much lately about what all has been going on with us. Nothing exciting, but I thought I’d do a quick bulleted update 🙂

  • We’ve been watching a lot of movies and TV on DVD lately. We’re still getting movies from Netflix, and Tim has decided that he wants to keep up with it. Our free trial subscription runs out in a couple of weeks, so I think we’ll renew and {gasp} actually start paying for it! We watched the whole first season of Heroes via Netflix’s online option. We hooked my laptop up to our big screen TV and watched it that way, which was cool. We also found the first five episodes of Heroes online at Netflix for free, so we got all caught up and are now watching season 2 in real time. As for movies, lately we’ve rented Evan Almighty, Fracture, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and Transformers. We enjoyed them all, but we both had a blast with Transformers!
  • As for TV, we have picked up Heroes, as well as the show I was looking forward to (Women’s Murder Club on Friday nights). We’re also still watching Chuck, Cane and Bionic Woman. I was trying to tape and watch Dancing with the Stars, but I’ve given up on that. Tim is not interested in watching it with me and it has been hard to watch the tape before the results show on Tuesday nights. Oh well. Tim is also not interested in picking back up with Amazing Race, so I’m not sure that we’ll watch that one either.
  • Tim and I have been spending a lot more time together lately. He’s been really good about going places that I want to go and running errands with me on the weekends. I’ve gone to the golf course with him, and we are obviously watching a ton of TV and movies together. It’s been really really nice. We love being together 🙂
  • I’m looking forward to the time changing this weekend. It is SO hard to get up in the AM right now to walk. It’s dark and chilly and it’s so much easier to just turn the alarm off and go back to sleep. I know it will still be hard, with the temps in the 30’s or 40’s, but at least it will be light. I like it when it gets dark early in the evening. I’m weird, I know, sue me :D. Tim is REALLY not looking forward to it. It cuts down on the time he has in the late afternoons to hit golf balls. I’m hoping that Tim will have some time to help me with some other things once the time changes 😀
  • Ever since I got my new laptop in March, and realized how much I dislike not only Windows Vista but the programs that came with it, I’ve been moving away from Microsoft products. I had so much trouble with Windows Mail in the beginning, that within 2 weeks of getting the laptop, I had wiped it off and started using Mozilla Thunderbird for my mail. I then moved to Mozilla Sunbird for my calendar, and now in the last week, I have finally broken down and installed Firefox on my laptop. My Internet Explorer windows kept shutting down and closing and driving me nuts. I’m hoping Firefox is a lot better. I’ve got to spend some time figuring out what kind of cool and useful add-on’s I need to install for Firefox. Suggestions? 🙂 Anyway, just wanted to report that I’m definitely a Mozilla girl now – mail, calendar and browser!
  • We have new neighbors. Tim has met them, but I have not. They have a dog, and Beau feels the need to go bark at their dog through the fence every time he goes outside and their dog is out. I’m sure they think we’re not very hospitable!
  • I’ve been trying to play with my new camera some. I haven’t had much chance to go anywhere and take photos. I am finding that I’m going to need a telephoto (zoom) lens more than I thought. It doesn’t have as much zoom on the base lens as I would like. I thought I would want a macro lens first, but I’ve been pretty happy with the close-up mode built in on the camera so far. I have so much to learn though. I still feel really dumb when I’m trying to use it 🙂
  • And last but not least, I’m going to go shopping tomorrow and at the top of my list – picking up the new “Home to Holly Springs” book by Jan Karon. I can’t wait, I’m so excited! I have so many books I want to read, so many I want to buy and so many I want to get at the library. The only downside to Tim and I spending so much more time together is that my reading has suffered. We’re busy running errands, watching TV and movies, hanging out together outside with Beau, doing stuff around the house, etc, so that doesn’t leave any spare time for me to read. Boo-hoo. 🙁

    1. Kim Said,

What a great post Stacey–it is fun to read this-n-that type posts, I think. It helps us get to know each other better! 🙂
Heroes—yeah! Our Monday night pretty much revolves around this show!! I usually tune in late in our living room where the boys are watching, as I start out watching Dancing With the Stars in our bedroom and then join them when it is over–I wish that show would stick within the 60 minute time frame so I didn’t have this overlap. Didn’t the previews last night look great? And that Sylar? That guy just plain creeps me out!! I would hate to be that actor–he is so good in that role, but I wouldn’t want to be associated with such an evil character! I am anxious to find out more about Peter….hmm…what really happened to him?

Now, about that book you are going to buy….can I just say how jealous I am??? I WANT that book, but promised myself I wouldn’t buy anymore for myself until after Christmas. If I buy all the ones I want, my husband complains there is nothing left for him to get me for Christmas! LOL!

Hope you have a great Tuesday–
      *smiles*

    2. Dawn Said,

I would love some cooler temperatures. Where are the cooler temperatures??

I thought about trying out Women’s Murder Club but then forgot to set the DVR to record it. Will I be very lost if I start watching it now? And what do you think of it?

Did you get to watch Favre last night??

    3. Simply Dawn Said,

You’re not the only one looking forward to the time change. With it getting cooler and darker earlier the guys uusally don’t ride as late as they do which make Dawn happier 🙂

Have a good weekend and enjoy this beautiful weather we’re having! Did you guys ever try PF Changs and I know there’s another new place out there I’m curious about…not sure of the name…but I know it’s by PF Changs.

    4. Bev Said,

DST change this weekend? YooHoo! I’m one of those that would just like to do away with it altogether.

There’s a lot of neat things for Firefox. AdblocPlus for one. No more of those pesky ads loading on web pages if you don’t want them to. Launchy which allows you to open a window in Windows. It comes in handy now and then. Session Manager which saves open tab info when you close out Firefox or have a crash for some reason. Or when I find out when my laptop has rebooted for an update. Toolbar Cleanup and Update Notifier for a couple more.

I’ve actually changed browsers to Flock. I don’t know why really. 😉 It’s practically the same as Firefox with all the Addons, etc. Just wanted to try it out and stayed with it.

I’ve had Netflix for several years now. I really enjoy it because I have a bad habit of returning movies to places like Blockbuster and Hollywood late. It’s really nice knowing I don’t have to hop in the car to return movies anymore and I’m fairly patient. I can wait for the movies to show up in the mail. 😉

Glad to hear you and Tim are doing so much together. It’s always nice. 😉

    5. jen Said,

We enjoy watching tv together too. We dont have hobbies in common….I mean we like to travel and we have the same goals in life but something about tv we enjoy together. Sounds like you two are getting ready for winter months early.

    6. Heidi Said,

I saw the new Jan Karon book in target yesterday and put it on my imaginary Christmas list:)
Good luck with your new neighbors, it can take a long time to get to know them.

    7. Momma Said,

I love FireFox. I will never use IE again. It’s good that you and the hubs are spending time together. At least someone is!

    8. Michael-Lover of Amy Said,

I’m with you on Heroes, having watched all of the first season on the DVDs my brother bought and I am now current.

I am watching Chuck and liking it, though two episodes were a little weak, the past two weeks have been good.

I’ve been a little more motivated to do nice things for a week or so, extra work cleaning and cooking in particular. I’ve made breakfast twice in the past 3 days as Amy got home from work, and we’re settling in to watch some TV on a day that started out pretty cold (mid-30’s) and is heading up into the high 60’s this afternoon.

Our only problem is the dog being a pain in the butt as she keeps trying to take things down from the kitchen table and then starts barking while we are watching TV. Sigh.

    9. Susanne Said,

I’m looking forward to Amazing Race. I’ve started to watch Numb3rs and have been enjoying that. So cool that you are spending more time together.

    10. Sadie Said,

I use Mac stuff for everything BUT internet. I heart Firefox. You will be happy, I promise!

I like Chuck, too. And Heroes. And Friday Night Lights!

    11. Debi Said,

What a nice post, Stacy! I love getting caught up with all you’ve been up to.

    12. Gail Said,

I watched Evan Almighty and thought it was pretty good, cute…..we rented 2 this past weekend, the 1st ones we’ve rented since the 1st of June! We might keep Netflix too, what plan are you getting?
Yay for the new Father Tim book! Where are you shopping, going to Sam’s by any chance?
Been craving a laptop bad again but I waver after I read that you don’t like Vista at all! Can’t get a laptop w/out it I don’t think.
And I’m like Bev, do away with daylight savings altogether! I get tired of switching back and forth!

    13. Desert Songbird Said,

I love Firefox. I’ve been using it for over a year now. The best thing for bloggers is that when you are typing comments or posts, Firefox will automatically point out your spelling errors; when you right click on the word, it will give you alternatives.

    14. theresa Said,

We were really hooked on Net Flix, I burned myself out, but my husband still get his moneys worth- he likes to rent back seasons of shows that he came late too. We also watch a lot of the indy films.

Beau might just be welcoming the new dog 🙂

I got a new computer in June, and it has windows vista, I am not crazy about it either- my hubby who is a techy says since it is the first version it still has a bunch of bugs.

Always nice when you can spend more time with hubby- I am really enjoying the walks with mine.

    15. sarahjane Said,

      Fun post!
I got a laptop in the beginning of this month and am also not a huge fan of vista – but I am getting used to it. I am not terribly tech-savvy, so my gmail/yahoo email accounts work for personal email when I’m not using outlook at work.
As far as the dark pumpkin pics on my blog – we have a “candle” setting on ours but that didn’t work very well. We ended up turning the flash off and using the “image stabilization” feature on our camera. Not too difficult, I was surprised they turned out as well as they did – we had some difficulty at first (my hubby didn’t know how to turn off the flash, hehe)

We loved Evan Almighty when we saw it at the drive-in. I loved the themes of family and the idea of God being in control. It was just enjoyable and I can’t get enough of steve Carrell… we’re big fans of “The Office.”

    16. Cam Said,

I love your catch up posts. 🙂
I’m so glad y’all are spending so much time together. I envy you right now, especially!
Hurray for you ditching Microsoft…you’re almost there. 😉

    17. Southern Girl Said,

I’m so behind on my commenting! But I’m glad you’ve decided to stick with Netflix and *relieved* you’ve gone Firefox! 😉 Vista is evil, there’s no doubt in my mind…it killed my brother’s computer just a month or two ago.

    18. Kim Said,

Hey! Guess what?? I went out and bought Home to Holly Springs last night (Friday). I am not very far into it yet, but am already hooked. Oh how I have missed reading Jan Karon. I forgot how engaging her writing style is. Have you finished it yet?
      *smiles*
      Kim

    19. Dianne Said,

I too love Firefox. I’ve gone to gmail though for mail and calendar – with me working, it’s so convenient to have the same info available everywhere I am. I’ve heard nothing good about Windows Vista.
And that’s so sweet about you and Tim just enjoying being together. I really hope that starts happening for us again soon, now that we think Mike’s about done with school!
Love these “this and that” posts. Oh and I made your baked oatmeal recipe again this morning . . . mmmm!

    20. sherry Said,

I really like “Women’s Murder Club”! I wasn’t planning on watching it, but then I did one night and was hooked!

We love Netflix. I’ve been paying for it for about 3 years now. 🙁 Oh the shame.

      Sherry
