Question

questionI have a quick question and wanted to get a little feedback. I’m starting to enter our books into LibraryThing. A dear, sweet friend sent me a one-year gift subscription she had won (but she is already a lifetime member), so I am going to get busy and start cataloging our books. It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time, so this is just what I needed to get me jump-started on another project.

I had looked quite a bit into downloading a stand-alone program to my computer, and using that to catalog our books. I did that with our DVD’s (although it’s not totally up to date, boo-hoo). But then I thought — what’s the fun in that? Half of the fun of programs like LibraryThing, Shelfari and others is that you can share, see what others are reading, and it’s so cute with the covers added. I don’t think the standalone program I was looking at had cover art. 🙂

Anyway, I’ve started with one of our bookcases, and I have more to go. My question is – if you were entering your collection of books (or if you already have), would you enter your cookbooks? I have a LOT of cookbooks, a couple of shelves worth. I love cookbooks. I check some out of the library (see yesterday’s photo post here), to see if I like them and would buy them. I want a lot more than I buy. I mean, seriously, as much as I love them, I am realistic. I don’t use them as much as I should. I tend to find recipes online these days, either via Menu Plan Monday or sites like AllRecipes.com. But, back to my question, if you were entering your books in an online system, would you enter cookbooks too, or just fiction/non-fiction books?

OK, I’m off to fix me some lunch. I have some leftover brown rice, so I’m going to make myself some fried rice and fix an eggroll (some in the freezer, don’t think for a minute that I make my own!) 😀

Have a great day!

P.S. When I get most of my books entered, I’ll put my LibraryThing widget on my sidebar. I currently have a list on my sidebar that contains books I have yet to read. Under my sidebar, in my TBR List. I am trying to decide whether to keep that page or just use LibraryThing. Decisions, decisions 🙄

**UPDATE**: Ok, well I decided to go ahead and enter my cookbooks. I think I have most of my books entered now. I’ve placed the widget on my sidebar 🙂

  1. Gail Said,

I’m not sure I know what the library thing is or how you use it…..are you cataloging your books so you’ll know all the ones you have? If so, you might want to know what cookbooks you have and where they’re located.
When my girls cataloged all Don’s books, by the Dewey Decimal system like a library and on shelves thank you very much!…..we did list some cookbooks that we have in the library. At the time I didn’t have as many as I have now, our books have gotten all out of whack and order and we can no longer access the place he had them on an old computer. But it helped him to go to the computer, look up what book he wanted and see the catalog number for that book; then he could just go to the shelf that had 307 and find the exact book….so it might be good if you’re going to list where you keep them. We have like 900+ books I think though so it really helped that way! And you can come do ours when you’re done if you only have 2 bookshelves!
If I could, I’d convince Don to sell, give away some of these!
Not sure that’ll help you or not!

  2. deb Said,

I’ve entered my cookbooks into my inventory. I can’t remember how many cookbooks I have but I think I’m up to 831 books all totaled and I’m not finished yet. Since you’re using the LibraryThing, I believe other people would definitely be interested in seeing your cookbook collection ;~)

  3. Bev Said,

I’ve cataloged all of my cookbooks along with all the fiction and non-fiction. As my son says of his graphic novels, “They’re still books, Mom.” 😉

  4. Eden Said,

Thanks for stopping by!!!! So, how many books do you have??? Hope to hear from you soon.

  5. Karen Said,

COOL widget! I’m reading this after you added the update. I would’ve definitely voted for cataloging the cookbooks, too! I’ll bet this was fun to do. I’m going to check out the website, just for fun.

  6. Heidi Said,

I’m not going to be any help to you. I have no idea! Much luck and I hope you have fun with it!

  7. theresa Said,

I agree you should include your cookbooks- wow you have been one busy person, first cleaning and now organizing! Go girl.

I am a big picture person and I have all my pictures organized by family friend etc.. and then my mom gave me some really old pictures she had scanned, so I put a z in front of all of them which kept them all together at the end of my photo collection.

  8. Kara Reed Said,

You are obviously extremely organized and ambitious! I’m impressed!

  9. SnoopMurph Said,

Very cool idea, btw. I chuckled over the cookbooks because the only one I own is the Better Homes and Gardens red and white basic one. I get more recipes on Allrecipes.com now, but I just could never get into cookbooks.

    Hope you are having fun!

  10. mamichelle Said,

Ah, I was going to say, yes, enter the cookbooks since you have such a collection! That’s quite a task!!

  11. Bea Said,

I’ve catalogued ALL of my books. Including school textbooks. I love LibraryThing.

  12. Kim Said,

Hey Stacy, I have the Library Thing account too. I need to update it since I used their transfer tool to transfer books from my bookcrossing page, and I have since given many, many of those away.

  13. yolanda Said,

I have enjoyed visiting your blog.I see you love books.I have started an online book club and would love to have you participate if you would like too.

  14. Shawna Said,

I don’t enter my cookbooks because I don’t think I love them as much as you do yours!! And I don’t have that many although I’m starting to pick up more Pampered Chef books.
