Today’s Question of the Day is another “quick and easy” one – do you consider yourself musical? Can you sing, read music, play a musical instrument? If not, which would you like to be able to do, or do better? Are you the only one in your family like that (musical or non-musical)? In other words, if you’re really musical, is your spouse and children the same way or just the opposite?
As for me, I can’t carry a tune in a bucket. I love music and I sing all the time – if no one else is around. I don’t have a good voice and I know it. I can’t read music and I can’t play any musical instrument. One of the things I wish I had been able to do growing up was take some kind of musical lesson. I would have liked to have had the chance to learn to read music, or to learn to play an instrument, or even sing in a choir. My mom knew that I loved to sing. I think she even wrote in my baby book that I was singing at an early age, and memorizing song lyrics long before I got to kindergarten. I love music, and I listen to it — a lot. My iPod has tons on it and I listen to music a lot on my computer. Surprisingly, I never think to turn on our TV and tune to the dozens of Music Choice channels we have. But I do love my iPod and I do love singing when no one can hear me!
How about you? Leave me a comment and let me know! 🙂
I’m like you Stacy – can’t carry a tune in a bucket. But I have a good ear and can hear if someone is singing off-key. Dom is the musical one in our family. He played sax in a small band and can play piano by ear. I can read music and can doodle around on the piano (we have one). I wish I could really play though. I just can’t get my two hands to do different things at the same time. Susan can carry a tune, but Donna has taken after me. That doesn’t stop us though. On car rides, we can really belt out the tunes – especially old Elvis songs. Our masterpiece is I Was The One! Shelby has a great voice, Ashlie not so great – but she’s still young.
Maggie can’t sing, but Teddy can howl with the best of them!
Haha, we are alike in that I can’t sing well either, but I do it all the time! I’m all about music, too. My “talent”, if I have any, is in playing music rather than singing it.
I can play piano because I had lessons for a few years growing up. But I haven’t practiced in years so I can’t play well. I would love to know how to play elec. guitar…one day I hope to learn. Philip knows how but hasn’t done it in years.
G is very musical; I suppose he gets it from both of us. He loves to “play” the piano and it’s very interesting because he doesn’t bang on it like most kids do…he “plays” it softly and thoughtfully and actually makes tunes sometimes. I expect he’ll take whatever music lessons interest him, in the future. Currently he says he wants to play the elec. guitar and the drums. I forsee lots of noise and a garage band in his teen years! 😀
I took piano as a child, but it has been years since I played. My mom plays the piano at the church I grew up in and my dad is the music director there. I sang in the school choir from 4th grade(When it began) until 11th grade(When my school sadly closed 2 weeks before school started). Sadly that same summer a couple of guy friends were riding a small motorcycle and got into an accident, one of them perished. We were a small school, and his family was very involved, and they asked a few of us to sing “Wind Beneath My Wings” at his funeral, per his older sisters request. That was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do, and I stopped singing publicly after that. I just couldn’t do it anymore, and now my voice is not the same (when not practicing so much every day). I still sing to my kids, in the car, house, etc…just not publicly.
I took piano for 11 years and now can’t play a note…well maybe a few but not like someone that took lessons for that long. Now as far as singing girl I love to sing but must confess not everyone likes listening to me sing 🙂
I consider myself musical in the sense that I know how to turn my Ipod/Itunes on and off
Big music person here. Studied it in college for fun (because getting a computer science degree wasn’t busy enough…). Have played 2 different instruments. Love to sing and can carry a tune but don’t have the vocal cords for it. 🙂
I don’t consider myself musical at all. Even though I can play the piano a little and read music, thanks to a few years of lessons when I was growing up, it’s definitely something I had to work at learning. Music doesn’t come naturally to me. Now, my husband is a musician. He played trombone in a jazzband in college, can sing and harmonize. He tells me I can carry a tune if someone else is taking the lead, I’m a good follower! My oldest son plays the piano well/can’t sing, #2 son took trombone lessons until he decided it was too heavy to carry so he switched to the trumpet and gave that up when he got braces. He’s not musical. And my daughter just started piano and is very motivated to learn. She sings nicely, too!
I can sing, and I can read music, but I have little to no instrumental abilities. I can pick out a melody on the piano, but nothing more than that.
hahahahahahaha ~ oh, that’s funny …….. NO! I can’t sing worth a hoot. But, it doesn’t stop me, LOL. I’m always singing and I love music. I played the clarinet in school. I doubt I was any good, LOL!
Nope. Not musical at all. Can’t sing, can’t play, can’t read music, can’t work an iPod.
Bwahahahahahaha!
You just KNEW I was going to make a snarky comment, didn’t you? Lessee…
I am a classically trained mezzo soprano. I can read music passably, but my stone cold reading skills are weak. I do NOT play an instrument, but I could play I would play piano, electric guitar, flute, and French horn.
My iPod is my best friend!!!!
I’m definitely musical, my family is also. Jono is also musical. We’ve actually sung a duet together before. I took piano and flute lessons growing up but am not very good on the piano and couldn’t play a flute to save my life anymore. 🙂
I can’t sing very well at all but that doesn’t usually stop me! I love music, can’t really play an instrument……I do sort of “play” handbells at church but I have to mark my music and count to know when to play it. I took piano for about a year as an adult but at the time we didn’t own a piano so it didn’t help the situation; plus, I just always wanted to be able to play without putting in all the years of practice! lol
E was the only one of our 4 to take lessons, T played clarinet briefly…..Don is not musical at all!
Singing and play piano & sax. Jeff’s the string instument guy. We just can’t “play” together. My style annoys him…
I played the clarinet and oboe briefly… so I can somewhat read music, enough to sing along to an unknown church song anyway…
I love to sing, I used to think I could sing pretty well but have since decided I sing very average, but I still love to sing especially at church.
Took piano lessons as a kid. Wish I’d have stuck with it. Really wish I could sing…but DEFINITELY can’t! I think I was a horrible disappointment to my mom. She not only plays several instruments, but she has a beautiful voice. In high school, she didn’t just make the state choir, she made the state quartet! But I think Annie may have got the old musical gene…she has a beautiful voice and according to her flute teacher she’s an absolute natural and can do things that most of her students can’t accomplish until about 9th grade. Rich plays guitar and drums. Still don’t know which way the boys will go…but I’d bet Gray won’t have a lick of musical talent since he eerily seems to take after me in every way.
Love to sing-unfortunatly a well can’t even carry my notes-but that doens’t stop me!
Sometimes I even scare my self when I try to hit high notes. My mother wanted us to play musical instruments, I have played the violin, piano, trumphet and guitar-although I can hit the correct notes I just don’t have the rythm-it is a sad story .
I love most kinds of music excpt rap and opera.
No musical talent here! Love music, but can’t carry a tune and have no instrumental ability (I figure if a decade of piano lessons didn’t do it, there’s no hope!).
I like to think I can sing. I did church choir for years and a production of You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown in which I played the lead.
I can read treble cleff only.
I can play the trumpet and the basic chords on a guitar, and again for treble cleff only, the keyboard.
I’m exactly like you. I only sing out loud in the car or if my Ipod headphones are on and I don’t think there’s anyone around.
I can’t play a musical instrument either. I thank God my boys took after dh in that respect. I have three musicians in the house anyway so how could I find the time to play when they’re not?! LOL
I was a dancer when I was younger. I took ballet, tap and jazz for 13 yrs. Does that count? 😉
I wouldn’t consider myself musical. But, I did play the sax in school. I loved marching band but hated practicing. I can sing kind of ok, but mostly out of tune. And I can read music, not that it helps me any! I love to dance to music, but once again I can’t dance. Not even coordinated at all or limber! It’s a pretty silly sight, but I have fun!
And no one in my direct family is musical. Although Beef can sing much better than I can. He can impersonate voices really well especially when playing karaoke. Any talent in singing would be on his side of the family.
I cannot sing but love too. I was in choir in the 7-10th grades….I do however love to dance and think I’m a good dancer…..but I dont see Jennifer Lopez sining me anytime soon…LOL!
I happen to be a music teacher, so hopefully I am pretty musical! I love to sing, played clarinet and bass clarinet from 4th grade on. I am working on learning guitar, which is challenging for me! My husband is a percussionist, he is much more of a performer than I am, but we have a lot of instruments about the house and our boys really enjoy music too. My 3 year-old just got his first snare drum, so it is a noisy musical household for sure.
I love to sing (but only in the confines of the bathroom where no one can hear me). haha! I cannot carry a tune at all. But I appreciate music and love hearing people sing live in concerts.
Well it’s been awhile since I’ve visited. No excuse really. Mostly laziness.
I had one of those mothers who believed that learning how to play a musical instrument was an integral part of childhood. I think I was around 9 or 10 when she found a really good deal on a violin so she also signed me up for lessons at one our music stores and off I went. My memory isn’t all that good but I don’t think I lasted a year. I wanted to play piano but we couldn’t afford to get one until after I was in high school. Next I played the clarinet for four years and probably would have gone on except our band teacher (who was also the instructor for the high school band) wanted me to switch to bass clarinet. He needed one. I, however, wanted to switch to oboe but he nixed that idea. So I gave up altogether. I did take a few years of piano after we got one as well as a couple years of guitar lessons when I made enough money to buy my own. In college I took voice lessons for several years, too. I loved that.
Now all I do is listen to music and sing along while I do housework. Makes it go a lot faster. 😉
