Booking Through Thursday Meme

Monogamy

One book at a time? Or more than one? If more, are they different types/genres? Or similar?

(We’re talking recreational reading, here—books for work or school don’t really count since they’re not optional.)

Ok, today’s question over at Booking Through Thursday is an easy peasy one for me. I am very OCD about my books. I start one, I finish one. I absolutely, positively, cannot start a new book until I’ve finished the one I’m reading. I don’t have the kind of personality or attention span to be reading two books simultaneously, even of different genres. I’ve tried to read a fiction book, and also have a non-fiction type book going at the same time, and even that doesn’t work for me. I have to start what I finish. Even if I don’t like the book, I will almost always keep reading, struggling through, despising every minute (I have a problem with abandoning goals too, obviously), until I finish. Then, and only then, do I allow myself to start a new one.

I wish I could read more than one at a time. It’s an admirable quality, if you ask me. I wish I wasn’t so regimented, but alas, it’s just who I am 😀

  1. SmallWorld Said,

And you are the first out of 16 that I’ve read on BTT who is monogamous, as I am. We are certainly in a minority!

  2. Crafty Green Poet Said,

I only ever read one novel at a time, to have more on the go would be too confusing. But I also have poetry and non-fiction at the same time.

  3. stephanie Said,

Up until a few years ago, I was completely a one book woman. But lately, I’ve been starting way more than one at a time! But I can never cross genres. If I did, I would be so confused, and that’s no fun!!

I saw you first post….I’m reading Marley & Me now!! I’m only about 4 chapters in, but it’s so easy to read, and I just love dogs. I have a feeling I’m going to love it!

  4. DeN Said,

Same here! I do want to be able to read two books simultaneously but I can’t seem to put one book down unfinished and pick another one up… unless the first book has bored me to catatonia. Too each his.her own, I guess. Besides, I think not abandoning things (it be book or goal) is an admirable quality, too ^_^

  5. sherry Said,

I’d like to read one book at a time, but I just can’t control myself. I read several at a time. Same genre, different genres, doesn’t seem to matter!

  6. Amy(SleepyReader) Said,

I am the same way. One book at a time for me. And, although I like to finish a book so I can cross it off my list,(oops another obsession slipped out 😉 )I am learning to abandon the stinkers.

  7. Shawna Said,

I read more than one book at a time, but they have to be different — non-fiction verses fiction. I can’t read more than one fiction book at a time, but I’m in the middle of two non-fiction books, a devotional, and whatever fiction book I decide at the time. I finish the fiction book fairly quickly but take a lot longer with non-ficiton.

  8. Marie Said,

Reading one book at a time works better for me, however I will drop a book if I can’t get into it. Time is precious, I don’t want to waste it on books I don’t enjoy. Happy BTT!

  9. Heidi Said,

I currently am reading 3 books. I don’t usually do it that way, but one is a memoir that I got bored with but will probably finish later.

  10. Melody Said,

My reading depends a lot on my moods…but I do read two books at the same time, but that’s the most I can get! LOL.

    Happy reading!

  11. dawn Said,

I can do two at a time but not more than that. Happy BTT

  12. Lauren@Baseballs&Bows Said,

I only read one fiction book at a time. Sometimes I can read one nonfiction with a fiction, but only one fiction at a time.

  13. Debi Said,

I used to swear I couldn’t read more than one at a time. Rich always has, but I just didn’t think I could do it. But a few months back (due to all my challenges and homeschooling), I decided to give it a concerted effort. And surprise, surprise…I found I actually could do it. So now I’m generally reading at least 3 at a time. Who’da thunk it?

  14. DawnK Said,

Most of the time I’m reading just one book, but earlier this year, I was reading two at the same time, because I think I got one from the library and then a book on hold came in, and I just couldn’t wait to start reading it! LOL! With Harry Potter, there could definitely only be one book, because there wasn’t time for any other books!
