QOTD – Rinse and Repeat

Shampoo in the ShowerAnnie, from “My Life as Annie” emailed me a great idea for a “Question of the Day” – thanks Annie!

Annie said she was in the shower, and was wondering if she was the only one who did the “shampoo, rinse, repeat” cycle that is on so many shampoo bottles. She wondered if most of us just shampoo, rinse and condition and go on about our merry way, or if we do it twice. Great question, Annie!

I’m afraid I’m in the less is more category. I shampoo, rinse and then condition and rinse. I know, I know, I should be following the directions. Well, oops, I am! I just went and looked and my bottle says to shampoo, rinse and condition. It is probably because it’s a shampoo for color-treated hair, and maybe they don’t want you to overdo it and strip your color out. Plus, I think it’s a time issue for me – I already wash my face, shampoo, condition, wash my body and shave my girl stuff in there, so it takes me a while in the shower. I think if I did the double time on the shampoo, I’d be in there an awfully long time 🙂

OK, so Annie and I and all of the other inquiring minds out there want to know – do you shampoo, rinse and repeat or not? And while we’re on the subject, if you’d like to share what kind of shampoo you like and use, I’d love to hear that too 🙂

  1. Lynne Said,

I do the shampoo, rinse, condition, rinse routine. Unless my hair is really, really dirty and doesn’t lather much – then I’ll do a second shampoo. That’s rare. I use Pureology shampoo and conditioner. My former hairdresser used these products and I love them. The conditioner smells like mint. I found a deal on gallon sizes of each on e-Bay, so I’m stocked for a while.

  2. Lynne Said,

Oh, the Pureology I use is in the purple bottle. There are about 4 different kinds. This one is the hydrate system. It helps hold the color and keeps hair from getting too dry.

  3. Carrie Said,

LOL@ *shave my girl stuff*! Like you, I only wash, rinse, condition, and rinse.

  4. kathie Said,

I rarely do the repeat the bottle suggests, unless my hair is super dirty. Who has time for that! LOL Shampoo brand….. whatever the last visiting missionary team left behind usually.

  5. sherry Said,

Wash, rinse, condition, rinse. I read somewhere that the 2nd wash doesn’t do anything but strip your hair!

    Sherry

  6. Cam Said,

I don’t wash my hair every day so when I do wash it, I wash it twice before I condition. In the event I do wash my hair 2 days in a row, I only lather up once.

  7. Lauren@Baseballs&Bows Said,

I used to do it twice, but I only do it once now. I wash my hair every day, so I decided I really don’t need to do it twice.

  8. Gail Said,

I don’t wash twice…..shampoo, rinse, condition, rinse. Right now I use either Redken or Matrix for color treated hair! There’s another one my stylist wanted me to try but I still have tons of both left so it might be a while before I change.

  9. Susie Said,

I think the only time I’ve ever washed my hair twice was after my high school proms when my hair had so much hairspray in it that I had no choice! I usually shampoo, rinse, condition, rinse. But about 50% of the time, I use a shampoo/conditioner, so then I only lather/rinse once. I may try washing twice next time to see if it makes a difference in how my hair looks.

My favorite shampoo is Garnier Fructis (I think that’s how you spell it); it does a great job and I love the way it smells!

  10. Bev Said,

I figure that if the people in the hair salons don’t do the shampoo twice thing, then I don’t need to do it either. 😉

About the closest I come to shampooing twice is when I kind of semi-rinse by stepping under the shower head a second and then building up the lather again before finally rinsing all the soap out.

As an aside in a series of books I’ve been reading the main character has a belief that the reason women don’t rule the country is because they spend too much time shampooing their hair. 😉

  11. deb Said,

I shampoo, rinse, condition, rinse. I also wash my hair every day with the exception of weekends. If we’re staying in, I don’t shampoo but if we’re going out, I have to shampoo and style my hair. I’m using Aveda hair products right now and I really love them. My daughter’s salon sells them so that’s what she gave me for Mother’s Day.

Great question! I’m interested in those Pureology products. I’ve never seen them around here. I love trying new things 🙂

    Happy weekend!

  12. Heidi Said,

I just wash & condition once. The other commenter had a good point that if at the salon they only do it once, then why should we repeat?

I have had to shampoo more than once to wash out the hairspray the few times I ‘ve ever had my hair done.

  13. Desert Songbird Said,

I’m a wash and condition once, too. I didn’t look at the bottle, so maybe because I’m a color-treated gal myself, mine says once too. Dunno, don’t really read. I’ve always done just the once, even with super long hair; it takes too long otherwise! Unless my hair is really dirty, or I’ve gone a day without washing it, or I’ve been in a pool — then I’ll wash twice.

  14. Southern Girl Said,

I am usually a wash, rinse, and then dry sort of person, unless my hair is just exceptionally dirty for some reason or I’m about to not be able to wash it for a while. Mostly I don’t do the rinse and repeat thing because it seems like my hot water never lasts long enough! I have very thick hair, so it takes awhile to get it rinse good even just one time.

I’m not married to any one particular brand or scent of shampoo, but lately I’ve been using and enjoying Herbal Essense…some sort of Rosewood scent.

  15. CoachJ Said,

I shampoo, rinse, then decide if I need to use conditioner based on how tangly my hair feels. If it’s really tangled, I condition; if not, I don’t. I have very oily hair, so I have a hard time with shampoos and conditioners weighing my hair down. I loved Biolage Energizing (I think) but they quit making it. Now, I’m using Bath and Body Works Aromatherapy shampoo with some Biologe detangler, when necessary. That shampoo sometimes weighs my hair down, so I use the aromatherapy body wash for shampoo for a day or two until I feel the need to go back to shampoo.
I’m just realizing how much thought I put into my hair. No wonder I don’t want to get in the shower–I have to think toooooo much!! 🙂

  16. Claire Said,

I use a combo shampoo contiditioner and only shampoo and then rinse. I try not to wash my hair everyday b/c if you do, your hair tends to respond to that by getting greasy if you miss a day. My brother is evidence of this. When he doesn’t wash his hair everyday it is a greasy, icky mess.

  17. Susanne Said,

With my short hair one wash is plenty. If I do it twice my hair tends to speed up the oil supply and then well, it’s just a never ending cycle.

  18. annie Said,

Thanks for posting my question, I’m a little surprised at the answers …
I shampoo, rinse, shampoo again, rinse and condition. My hair feels so much cleaner when I shampoo two times.
I use biolage & love it!

  19. Jill@ Who Could Ask for Anything More Said,

I am so glad you asked this question because I’ve always wondered what others do. I used to shampoo twice and didn’t use conditioner. Now I shampoo once, rinse, condition, and rinse. I will still shampoo twice if I’ve been at the pool, or otherwise feel really grungy.

  20. Sparky Duck Said,

you think I even bother with conditioner? Let alone rinse and repeat??

  21. kailani Said,

Since I wash my hair daily, I don’t do the repeat thing. I use Paul Mitchell’s Awapuhi Shampoo.

  22. Cam Said,

Oh! I forgot the other question. I use Suave for blonde-highlighted hair. I’m cheap, and it works quite well.

  23. mamichelle Said,

All I do is shampoo and rinse. My hair doesn’t need conditioner. I only have that done once a month when I go to the hairdresser.

  24. Dawn Said,

I shampoo, rinse, put in the conditioner, do whatever else I need to do in there, then rinse the conditioner out. I figure they don’t wash-rinse-repeat when I got to have it cut, so how important can it be? =P

And I use all different kinds of shampoo & conditioner. Right now I am using Sauve for Blondes.

  25. Sonya Said,

Shampoo, rinse, done. I’ve never thought to shampoo twice. I wash my hair everyday so it never occured to me to do it twice! LOL! I use TRESemme 2 in 1 (shampoo + conditioner) and that works well for me. If I use regular conditioner alone, it tends to make my hair too soft so that’s why I do the 2 in 1. I do try and rotate shampoos every few months so I have used almost everything there is in Walmart! LOL!

  26. trista Said,

I shampoo, rinse, condition, rinse. A previous hairdresser recommended to me, long ago, that I not shampoo twice, b/c it tends to build up on the scalp, at least it did for me.
