Stamps – QOTD

StampsI just posted my entry below for this week’s Blog Talkers, where I refused to talk about what is on the front page of my local newspaper (local politics, the mayor, the city council, the legislature, all politics, ugh), and instead I talked about stamps. I didn’t realize until I saw in the newspaper earlier this week that postage stamps were going up in May.

I actually don’t use a lot of stamps anymore. I pay a lot of our bills electronically, and that has really cut down on the number of bills and letters that I mail every month. Some bills do still get put in the mail, along with birthday cards, rebate forms, and various other forms of communication. But, overall, my stamp usage has gone way down since I started doing so much online. The main time of year I buy stamps is at Christmas, to mail out Christmas cards.

So, that is today’s Question of the Day: Do you use a lot of stamps? How often do you go and buy new stamps? Do you go to the post office to buy them, or another place? Do you get them through your mail carrier? Did you know that postage rates were going up in a month or so?

Leave me a comment and let me know 🙂

  1. Southern Girl Said,

I rarely use stamps. Well, I should say, I rarely use stamps that I personally purchase. 😉 Once in a while I fetch one out of my father’s desk drawer. heee! But even that’s rare. Like, only two or three times a month. I think Thursday was the first time I actually put a stamp on something in two or three weeks. We buy our stamps at the post office, yes. Once in a while at the grocery store. And yes, I knew about the rate increase. *sigh*

  2. Write From Karen Said,

    Morning Stacy!

We don’t use a lot of stamps here, either. We pay our bills online and if I ever have to get in touch with anyone, they are just an email away. 🙂

I think it’s outrageous that the rate is increasing – AGAIN. And so soon after the last hike. Before long, stamps will be $1.00. It’s nuts. And did you hear about the “forever” stamp, or whatever it’s called? I still don’t understand how it works but if they have to implement such a program, then you KNOW the price is going no where but up from this point on. *sigh*

  3. deb Said,

We don’t use a lot of stamps either. I do most of the bill paying online these days which saves a tremendous amount of time. I may buy a few of the forever stamps just to have on hand 🙂

  4. JennaG Said,

I use about twenty stamps a month. Mostly to send out cards to people. I knew stamps were going up, but not so soon! I guess the postal system is trying to stay afloat what with all of us using electronic methods for communication and bill paying! I’m sure it has taken a toll on them! 🙂 Oh, and I go to the post office to buy my stamps.

  5. Carrie Said,

I had heard they were going up but I wasn’t sure when. That really burns my britches, LOL! I don’t use nearly as many stamps as I used to. The last time I bought stamps was the week of Valentine’s Day. I used my last one yesterday. We have a post office in our Piggly Wiggly and that’s where I go. It saves me a 15 minutes trip to the main post office.

  6. Lynne Said,

I hardly ever use stamps any more. My bills are paid electronically and I rarely send cards. When I do need stamps, I just put out the orange envelope for the mail carrier with my check, and the next day the stamps are there waiting for me. I think 41 cents for a stamp is ridiculous. And I’ve heard talk of cutting back delivery, so there’s no Saturday mail any more.

  7. Judi Said,

I am an on-line bill pay junkie. I mean really, how much more convenient could it get???? So, my stamp useage is almost non-existent. The bills I don’t do online are usually ones that I drive to and drop in a payment box. When I do need them I go to the post office for them. I did know they were going up. I heard it was due to so much being done on-line. Whatever…it seems like they go up once a month!

  8. Lauren S. Said,

I just buy a roll of 100 so we don’t have to buy them often. We do so much electronically that it takes forever to use 100 stamps!

  9. Laura Said,

Until the end of last year I paid all my bills with checks and mailed them. We went through quite a few stamps every month. Now the only time I write a check is for a personal payment or K’s car payment. Everything else I pay online. 🙂

Incidentally I think the “forever stamp” is a crock and unless the PO starts doing some serious competition with other carriers, they are going down.

  10. Heidi Said,

First off, i didn’t know that stamps were going up again! Thanks for the info. I buy stamps about once every 4 months and of course, more at Christmastime. There are a few bills that we have to mail, plus, I like to send actual cards to people for no reason. I love mail!

  11. Kim Said,

    Hi Stacy,
I’m glad to see you back online. Gail told me you were having internet problems again. I don’t buy stamps often at all. When I do, I pick them up at the post office. I had heard on the radio that the price was rising again. They also mentioned looking at some type of one rate stamp in the future, but I didn’t hear the whole story.

Have a great weekend. I’ll be off and on over the next week or so while we are vacationing.

  12. Cam Said,

We don’t use a whole lot. Most of our bills are paid online and email has taken over my real letter-writing (for better or for worse). We buy 20 stamps a couple of times a year, and a bunch of them at Christmas time.
I’m almost speechless that the rates are going up again, so soon. Grrrrrr…

  13. Stacy Said,

I buy a lot of postcard stamps. My birthday cards are “homemade” postcards so that’s the main thing we use stamps for. I am trying to mail a card to our three sets of grandparents once a month, that’s the only real stamps we use.

I try to keep up with postal news. I hate the rate increase and have discussed it in length with the postal workers near work…it was a slow day for both of us.

I do look forward to purchasing the new Star Wars stamps coming out in May though. They will never be mailed. I’ll save them to frame in the future.

  14. booklogged Said,

I hardly ever buy stamps anymore. I did buy some the other day to put on some books I was sending out for bookmoochers.

  15. Gail Said,

We do use and buy stamps, get them at the post office and buy 100 at a time. Don still pays some bills by mail….we’d like to change that! Of course at Christmas we use a lot more b/c of sending out cards, or if I’m involved in giving a party and am in charge of invitations like this month, then I use more!

  16. Rob Said,

We have stamps from the price increase several price increases ago. Most of the stamps I buy are for collecting purposes. Strange, huh?

  17. twiga92 Said,

I don’t use stamps very often anymore. We only have a couple bills that we still pay by snail mail – most of it is done electronically. If I get in a jam where I need to go buy stamps and haven’t gotten to the post office I can always use my work’s postal meter and just pay my work place for the cost. And no, I didn’t know stamp prices were going up again! Urggh! I used to buy stamps quite a bit when I was doing more with paperback swap – but I’ve cut down on that to save money.

  18. Karla Said,

I use stamps quite often. I send birthday, anniversary, get well cards quite often.
Yes…I did hear they are going up. What I wonder is…why are the prices going up when the customer service seems to be getting worse? Maybe it’s just here in Memphis, but everytime I go to the post office it seems there is only one or two windows open out of 6 or 7 so there is always a long wait. And…when I do finally get to the counter, the postal worker is not friendly and moves like molassses. (veeeerrrrry slow!!) Just a little vent…

  19. Sparky Duck Said,

nothing like being late for a question of like 3 days ago! But, we do not use many stamps here, because I have finally gotten Mrs Duck to pay her bills online!
