Puzzle Mania

Crossword PuzzleI realize my little blog has been more boring than normal lately. I seem to just be posting memes, and of course, I do post a photo every day (usually with a little story or blurb) over at my Project365 blog. Go check it out if you haven’t lately (shameless plug!). 😀

I thought it was time for another Question of the Day… today’s question is all about puzzles. Do you work any kind of puzzle- crossword puzzle, other word puzzles, Sudoku puzzles, or any other kind? If so, what do you do and what do you like? Do you work them online, in the newspaper, in books, or what?

Here’s my answer – puzzles are sort of a happy thing for me. I like them and go through phases of doing them myself. I went through a huge Sudoku phase last year, where I worked a lot of Sudoku puzzles. Mostly online, or ones in the newspaper. I know my sister Gail bought a book, and I think my sister Suzanne bought a book for our dad. We are trying to get him interested in something! Puzzles are a happy reminder to me of my mom. My mother got up every morning and worked the crossword puzzle in the newspaper. She worked the “Jumble” too. She loved puzzles and she was really really good at them. She knew all of those obscure “crossword puzzle words” that they use that the average person doesn’t know. It’s an omnipresent memory I have of her, working the puzzle every morning, drinking her coffee and smoking her cigarette. (I won’t jump on that bandwagon today. Cigarettes are nasty things and they took their toll on my mother before she passed away).

Lately, I’ve been doing these “word-seek” puzzles. You know the kind, where you find them forward, backward, vertical, diagonal, in a block of letters. I used to do those when I was younger, and I’ve been on a little kick with them again lately. I’m sure this too, shall pass 😀

So, how about you? Do puzzles of any kind interest you at all? If so, what kind, where or how do you work them? Leave me a comment and let me know!

[…] Today’s photo ties in with a post on my regular blog.  Today’s “Question of the Day” is all about puzzles.  Crossword puzzles, word puzzles, Sudoku puzzles – do you work them, and if so, how and where.  You can click here to hop over to my regular blog and play along, if you’d like. […]

  2. Heidi Said,

Hi Stacy! I’ve been busy lately so I’ve haven’t had much time to blog. You know I always love your questions. However, I don’t really do puzzles. I like word searches, but that is just something I do in the car on a trip or while I’m on vacation. Not something I do regularly. And I just don’t see the craze with Soduku.

    🙂 Have a great day!

  3. Laura Said,

I love that you “work” puzzles. That is a phrase my grandmother says. You Southern ladies, always reminding me of my grandmother. Same with a photo being “made”. You just wouldn’t use those terms out here in the west. I love it!

Okay, on to the answer. This question also reminds me of my mother because she does puzzles all the time. She is a Sudoku master, and she loves the jumbles. I like jumbles and wordfinds. I will do those occasionally. I’m not as good at crosswords but my grandmother (yes the Southern one) is a PRO. She would know every answer there ever was, and all of the possibilities too. 🙂

  4. mamichelle Said,

Hi Stacy! I like crosswords and word search but never do them any more. My mom steals all the crosswords (People, TV guide, newspaper). I never seem to have enough time to read my magazines and books so I do that instead of puzzles.

They’re great for the mind though!

  5. Susie Said,

I love puzzles and games and such. I feel like it keeps my brain in tune. 🙂

  6. Lynne Said,

I was on a logic puzzle kick for a couple of weeks. I could do medium-difficulty ones, but the harder ones threw me for a loop. Not very logical, I guess.

My mom used to do a certain type of puzzle that I can’t find anywhere. You had to fit words from a list into spaces. No definitions, just fit them in by length. I wish I could describe them better. They were fun and she did them by book-loads.

  7. Gail Said,

Sudoku baby! I’m still on that kick but some days more than others.
I used to have an online site I liked for crossword puzzles, maybe it was because I could actually do most of it! I like them in the paper BUT, I feel like I never know many of them and get frustrated easily.

I’ve been boring on my blog too, can’t think of what to write so I just did more pictures, which is probably boring to everyone but me or you!

  8. Lisa Said,

I love puzzles. My current favorite are kakuro (?) which I think are also called cross-sums.

  9. Lynne Said,

The puzzles my mother used to do are called fill-it-in puzzles. I’ll have to look for some – they were fun to do.

  10. Carrie Said,

No! I’m a snooze. Puzzles don’t excite me, LOL!

  11. CMChristine Said,

I love puzzles! When I was a kid I was the dorky one that checked out brain teaser books from the library, and I am happy to say I am still that same dork, LOL! Puzzles of any kind will do – crosswords, word finds, etc. Am I the only one who takes the kiddie menu from the actual kid to do the puzzles????

  12. twiga92 Said,

I went through a phase where I did a bunch of jigsaw puzzles. That was fun. I even glued and framed some of them.
I like those word search puzzles. I’m fairly good at them. But I’m terrible at figuring out crosswords.

  13. Shawna Said,

I caught on to Sudoku last year. I bought a book, and Beef also bought me a digital Sudoku handheld game. I mostly use the book because I can see the numbers better. I love word searches and do those at my grandmother’s. She always has 2 or 3 books laying around.

  14. Cam Said,

My MIL is much like your mom was; crossword puzzles make me think of her, sitting on her recliner working her daily crossword. She still does it, but for the past year or so she’s been into Sudoku. Whenever they come over, she always brings her Sudoku book and she sits and works it while we’re visiting.
I like crossword puzzles, but only the hard ones, like on Sundays. I used to do them often, PHilip & I together, but we just don’t have time anymore. When I was a teller I used to keep a crossword book stashed in my drawer for slow days.
I also like Crostics…those are very challenging.

  15. Debi Said,

I love, love, love puzzles! Just about any kind. Well, except for the word search kind. Don’t know why I don’t like doing those…though I love seeing them because they remind me of my grandpa who ALWAYS had a word search puzzle book within reach. My favorite are definitely logic puzzles.
