QOTD – Pillows

PillowsMy blog buddy Heidi, over at God’s Grace in Practice, asked if I had asked a “Question of the Day” about pillows – and I have not. Great idea, thanks Heidi!

How many pillows do you sleep with on your bed? What kind of pillows are they? We’re sort of particular about our pillows. Tim has a problem with feathers and down, so I never buy down pillows and we can’t sleep under a down comforter. I buy synthetic pillows or down alternative. I always try to get some that say “hypoallergenic”, because those seem to do better for us. I don’t have a problem with feathers or down, but if Tim is sneezing all night and miserable, then I do have trouble sleeping! Anyway, we just sleep with two plain, regular sized pillows. No extra pillows, no body pillows. I do wash them fairly often, at least every few months, and more often in the summer when it’s hotter. I probably wash them every month or so in the hot part of the year. I replace them when they are looking bad. Which, for Tim, is sooner than me. He scrunches his pillow up when he sleeps, and his gets broken down and lumpy a lot faster than mine. I don’t keep track, but I probably buy new pillows every 12-16 months.

Oh, and for the record, since I was blogging about this, I just went and put our pillows into the washer. Hehehehe! 😀

So, thanks to Heidi, that’s today’s Question of the Day: How many pillows do you sleep with, and what kind? Anything out of the ordinary? Do you wash them regularly or replace them often?

  1. Heidi Said,

Thanks for posting my question! I am interested in everyone’s answers. I use two pillows, though sometimes I sleep with no pillows at all. When I use two, I usually lay my head on one and put my arm over the other one. I am having a horrible time finding a pillow that I like. We have used memory foam pillows, those foam ones in all the different shapes, down pillow and the regular pillows. Our guestroom like like a pillow graveyard for the ones we don’t like!

The foam ones are too hard, and the regular ones seem like they lose their shape too fast.

Maybe I should try a down-alternative one. Or maybe I’m just fickle!

  2. Shawna Said,

Oh, I’m so behind reading your blog. Good question. I sleep with 2 pillows, one regular and one body pillow. I sleep on my side and use the body pillow for support. Beef sleeps with at least 5 pillows. He literally builds a wall of pillows to support himself.

I have not been able to find a good pillow to replace my head pillow. I have bought at least 3 pillows to replace mine, but I can’t ever make it through the night with a new one. I tell Beef to smash it down for me by sleeping on it, but I don’t usually get it back after that.

  3. Gail Said,

Well we sleep with only 1 pillow each……..there are extra pillows on the bed that get tossed off for the night but just one for me to put under my head when sleeping! And I have no idea what kind it is! Which means maybe I should buy some new ones! But when I get one like I want it, it’s hard for me to want to break a new one in.

  4. Cam Said,

    Another good question.
We just have regular pillows. I don’t like flat pillows, and I don’t like them too tall, either. The ones we have say they’re extra-stuffed, but they don’t seem like it–they seem just right.

We each sleep on only one, with these exceptions: If Philip is snoring, using two helps him to stop. And if I’m feeling stuffy or nauseated, I like to use two and prop myself up a little…that’s been happening often lately.

I probably don’t wash them often enough. I bought the set of four, four years ago, and have washed them once. But, I use zippered pillow covers underneath the pillow cases, and those get washed whenever I wash sheets.

Little G sleeps on one pillow, the flattest one I could find. I wash his bedding and his pillow more often, because he’s a drooly sleeper. 😛

  5. Laura Said,

We sleep with two pillows each. They are combo down/feathers, they’re expensive, and they very rarely need replacing/washing. (I wash the pillow covers instead.)

  6. Lynne Said,

We just bought some new pillows. They’re kinda like memory foam, but not as expensive! Dom used to sleep with two pillows – called the stinky pillows – that he had for a gazillion years. I was SO glad to throw them out!

  7. Kim Said,

Hey Stacy, fun question. We just got two new memory foam pillows with our new mattress last week. I can’t decide how much I like it though. I am a big fan of down pillows and the more pillows the better for me. My husband sleeps on one of whatever is handy. He could sleep in the floor without one if he needed to. I saw some pillows at Sams yesterday by Serta that I may have to go back and check out. I know from experience that I have to do it soon or they’ll be gone!

    Have a great evening!

  8. Susanne Said,

We’re a feather pillow family. I’ve got a better version with down and 3 chambers. I used to have one that I hugged but it drove hubby nuts but I think I’ll son be reintroducing it.

  9. Judi Said,

We use the synthetic pillows too. And definitely the hypoallergenic. We each have two. One king size and one standard size…I know…we are weird.

  10. amy Said,

I was sent to your blog and I love it..We have a king size bed and each of us get at least 2 pillows. I have to hold one while I am sleeping…not sure why.. great question

  11. Dawn Said,

mine are synthetic but i have to sleep with a bunch! i have six! i don’t alwatys use them all. sometimes i shove a bunch offf onto the floor while i sleep. other times i make a big “nest” with them. once in a while i will sleep with just one or even none! it’s all about what feels comfy that night. LOL

  12. mamichelle Said,

Ooh, I missed this one, Stacy! Great question.

We only sleep with a king sized pillow each. I have this major problem with buying pillows. I cannot stand a mushy one. I like a nice foamy/firm pillow and cannot find a decent one. I’ve tried quite a few but after about a week or so they have that head indent that drives me nuts. I’ve spent quite a bit on them and it doesn’t seem to make a difference. I’d like a memory foam one but they’re too expensive to buy and not like!

I give my rejects to my hubby. He likes a flat pillow!
