Writing in Books, Part Two

A couple weeks ago, we asked about how you take care of your books, with one of the questions asking whether you write in your books. Well, what about books that are meant to be written in? Like, say, a journal or diary? Do you keep one? Obviously, if you’re answering this, you have a blog–do you just let your blog be your journal? Or do you also keep one for private stuff also?

OK, another great question! I had previously answered that I don’t mark in my books in any way. I don’t turn down the corner of a page, I don’t underline or write in the margins. The most I *might* do is write my name in the front or write something in it such as “Happy Anniversary Tim, Love, Stacy”. And those are only in special books, that we want to keep and not loan out and lose.

Now, for today’s question: No, I don’t keep a diary or journal. Just my blog. And I don’t blog too much of a personal nature or things that I don’t want the world to know. When I first started, I was writing some private posts that were not published, but I don’t do that much anymore. I’ve actually been really surprised that I’ve been able to keep this blog going for over two years. Growing up, I got several diaries or journals over the years, and I was horrible at keeping them. I’d have a few entries written in January and maybe into February, but by March or so, it was pretty much empty. I still have most of those diaries, so I have the proof! I could just never keep them up. I tried year after year, but never could. So, as I said, this blog has been a real change of pace for me. 🙂

  1. Heidi Said,

Yes, I’m bad at keeping a journal too!

  2. Becky Said,

I, too, am bad at keeping a journal! But, I’m really glad you did start blogging…it’s been great getting to know you!

  3. mamichelle Said,

I don’t keep a journal except my blog. I put as much as I can in it but there are things that can’t be posted.

I was so afraid someone would search my name and find it when we had the pending law suit on my son’s attacker. So I’m sometimes very vague.

Anyway, it’s funny, I never dog ear my books and hate when others do. I don’t write in mine either but I’m considering it. When my mother-in-law passed away and we were going through books, we noticed she wrote a review of each book. It was great to see in her words whether it was a good read or not. Now I’m thinking about doing this but haven’t started yet.

  4. paperback writer Said,

Hmmmm…college books were always marked up. Now though, I won’t harm a page in a book. My husband on the other hand…well, let’s just say you know which books are mine and which are his.

As for keeping a journal? You’re talking to the girl who’s been keeping one since she was eight. I’m on number #45. What does that tell you? 🙂

  5. Lynne Said,

I don’t write in books, not even my name. Except my textbooks from nursing school which were highlighted all over the place.

I don’t keep any other journal, just this blog and the one on extrapounds.com. My best friend, Tina, kept diaries through high school that were huge! She always had added pages every day and kept things like movie ticket stubs in them. I think she still has all of them too.

  6. Julia Said,

I did started out writing something private too, on my blog but now I stopped. Some are even on “draft” stage. As I said lot of time, I try to keep my private life out from the blog as I can. You may see little here and there but not by much

Happy Booking Through Thursday! Here is Mine!

  7. meeyauw Said,

The topic this week seems to be as much about blogging as jouralling! It’s interesting that your diaries tend to stop about February or March. I wonder if there is a connection between my episodic journals. I suspect there is. Have a great week!

  8. Melody Said,

I can say blogging seems to take over the role of journals and diaries nowadays…not that it’s a bad thing. 😛 To me, it’s kinda a new writing style of today’s world. Happy BTT!

  9. Literary Feline Said,

I’m enjoying reading all the answers to this week’s question. Blogging certainly has opened a door for people not only to share their thoughts and ideas but also to reach out to others with similar tastes and interests. Like you, I limit the amount of personal information I share about myself. My blog is devoted mostly to my reading. I do keep a journal of sorts (all in the computer), but I add to it so sporadically. I’m not a faithful journaler unless I’m writing about the books I read. That I seem to do religiously. 🙂

  10. Shawna Said,

I cannot write in books even if it’s a workbook. I copy the questions into a notebook!! I do keep a journal for my Bible study time and for major crisis emotional days!! It helps relieve stress when I don’t (or won’t) talk to anyone about my feelings.
