The One About Milk

MilkIt’s time for another “Question of the Day”. Today, I’d like to talk about milk. I know a lot of people don’t drink milk, and that’s cool, but we are definitely milk drinkers in our house. There’s just two of us, and we usually go through about 2 gallons a week. We have milk every morning on our cereal, and we usually have milk at night. Sometimes with cookies or something sweet, and sometimes it’s just milk. If we have breakfast food for dinner, we often stir Hershey’s syrup into milk and have chocolate milk with dinner. We love milk. But, here’s the thing, we drink only skim milk. We can’t afford the calories of the higher-fat content milks. Love them, but we’re perfectly happy with skim milk. I went through a phase where I drank soy milk, but I haven’t done that in a while. I mostly stick to skim.

On a related note, our milk has gotten really high here. I always buy the store brand, and at my Walmart last week, one gallon of skim milk was $3.36. I was shocked! Of course, it could be worse. A small, half gallon carton of organic milk is that much, but still. Thankfully, our Kroger runs a sale fairly often, and sells their store brand of milk 2 gallons for $5.00.

So, that’s today’s Question of the Day: Do you drink milk? If so, what kind (whole, 1%, 2%, skim, organic, soy, etc) and how much do you usually drink in a week’s time? If you remember, how much do you pay for milk where you live? Inquiring minds want to know!

First on milk: I hate it! Never drink it! I eat ff yogurt and cheese and take a calcium supplement. I also get calcium from fortified Propel water! My daughters and dh LOVE milk! They go through 3-4 gallons a week of skim. Milk is much cheaper here! Some store has it on sale every week. Last week I paid 1.88 a gallon!

Second on Slowcooker Thai Chicken: FIVE STARS! OMG it was so so good! I will most definitely make it again. I made it exactly like the recipe, down to the cilantro (which I love). This was so great! Even with regular peanut butter, the calories and fat were within a healthy range 🙂 I will most definitely make this for years to come!

  2. jen Said,

You are funny…but I have to say I LOVE your question of the day….
    Okay……

YES we drink alot of milk……first of all we buy 2 gallons a week…Miller drinks whole milk until he turns 2…..and we drink skim…..Madison and I drink a glass every night for dinner……and Scott has it in his cereal every morning…I cook alot with it too….Miller drinks 8 ounces for breakfast and 4 ounces for lunch and 6 ounces for dinner….we drink alot of milk….alot…..big milk drinkers here.

  3. Debi Said,

Only time I personally drink milk is with chocolate cake. But I do use it on cereal most mornings. And Rich never drinks it. And even so, we go through 4 gallons each and every week! Thanks to 3 kids. The only kind I ever buy is skim milk. My kids don’t know any better, which is good. But some of their friends complain…oh well. And unless milk has gone up drastically without me noticing (which is entirely possible), we’re still paying under $2.00 a gallon (it’s perpertually “on sale” with store card). Really, really, REALLY wish we could afford to buy organic milk…but last time I checked it was $5.99 a gallon.

  4. Stacy Said,

    Only Skim milk.

We go through spurts. I just tossed a gallon & 1/2 on Sunday, but went right to the store bought another gallon and I’ve drunk about 1/2 all by myself (with Hershery syrup of course!)

I have no idea what it cost me. I just threw it in the buggy and moved along.

  5. Becky Said,

We are a milk drinking family. I buy atleast one gallon every other day. Hubby, daughter, and I drink 2% and the baby, well not a baby anymore :(, drinks whole. I almost always buy milk at Kroger and it usually costs us $2.39 a gallon. I love to have a nice tall cold glass of milk before bed and yes it is usually with something sweet! But, my favorite time to have milk is with a PB&J sandwich!!! Loved your question of the day. Sorry I haven’t been by in the last few days…I was on an unplanned bloggy break! Glad to be back though! And, yes, I missed the movie again. I’m so disappointed.

  6. Lynne Said,

I love milk. I drink only skim now, but had to work my way down from whole to 2% to 1% to skim. I don’t think I could stomach whole milk any more. Dom drinks soy milk – his inner workings can’t handle cow’s milk. I’ve backed off on drinking milk and really need to start again. These old bones need all the calcium and Vitamin D they can get!

  7. Gail Said,

Only buy skim for us, with some vanilla soy thrown in for my cereal on lots of days!
If the kids come in, I have to buy something more than skim for them.
Last week I paid $1.49 a gallon for skim, think I told you that on the phone and I think it was a one time thing. I noticed in the other Walmart I was in yesterday that the skim like you buy was about $2. 60 something I think a gallon. Somehow I think it’s your area/store, weird. Now my local regular grocery store is a different matter; it’s been $3.70 or 3.80 something a gallon for quite a few years! That’s why I was glad Walmart got groceries in!

  8. deb Said,

I’m the only one in the house that drinks milk. I only drink it when I eat oatmeal or peanut butter. I eat it in my cereal. I cook with it. A half-gallon usually doesn’t get completely used up in a week and I end up having to pour it out and buy another fresh one.

I buy 1% or skim milk. I can’t drink whole milk…it feels too thick in my mouth!

And yes, milk prices are soaring.

I should try the soy milk but it’s even more expensive lol!

  9. Dianne Said,

We only drink skim. Can’t stand anything with any higher fat content. A gallon lasts us at least a week. I couldn’t tell you how much it costs. Aldi’s is probably cheaper but their stuff is always nearer the expiration date so I stay away from their dairy products.

I like to think I get most of my milk in my lattes!!!

  10. Judi Said,

Skim all the way baby! I am really the only consumer in the house so I usually just have to buy 1/2 gallon. It is usually about $2.99. My little boy is getting ready to go to whole milk so we will see what that costs. But it has to be VASTLY cheaper than his formula which costs $24/can and a can lasts about 3 days. YIKES!

  11. Karla Said,

I L-O-V-E milk! It is by far my favorite drink. I love to drink it in a frosty mug…right out of the freezer. Also…if I don’t have milk for some reason, I actually feel like I am having a withdrawl (similar to a caffiene withdrawl) and have to drink some before I go to bed. Isn’t that weird?

I will usually drink skim milk but will occasionally have a glass of my daughter’s 2%. My daughter and I are the only ones who drink milk in our house and we go through about 3 gallons a week.

  12. southernfriedgirl Said,

Milk only on cereal or with something like cake or cookies. I just recently was able to find 1% skim chocolate milk that is fab. Normally, we drink skim. I pay a little under 3 bucks a gallon at the Wally.

  13. Kathy M Said,

We drink milk here. I buy 2%. I usually just have it in my cereal, but I like half & half in my coffee too.

  14. Cam Said,

G & I drink lots of milk, but Philip doesn’t drink it.

I drink Skim, for the same reason you do, plus I actually like it better. I drink about a gallon a week, sometimes less.
G drinks 2%, because that’s what’s recommended at his age. And he drinks about a gallon a week.

We both drink organic milk, because with the amount we drink, I felt like it was worth being cautious about the antibiotics & hormones. Normally I don’t worry too much about organic or not, but with milk, I do.

I wish so much they’d sell organic in gallons! We have to buy 1/2 gallons & we usually buy several of each kind at a time. It’s a little over $3 per half gallon at our Walmart.

  15. Heidi Said,

1% milk. Probably a gallon a week for 3 people. I think about $3 for the store brands at the grocery store. Maybe a few cents more. and YES it does seem really expensive for milk!

I’m not a huge fan of milk, but I like it with certain things and of course, on cereal.

  16. Susie Said,

Jeff and I compromised when we got married on our milk. He was used to skim milk, I was used to 2%, so we met in the middle and started drinking 1%. I can tolerate skim, but I honestly don’t like to. My milk has to have some kind of creaminess to it for me to enjoy it, and skim just doesn’t have the texture that I like.

We don’t drink many plain glasses of milk around here. I drink it in my coffee, and Jeff puts it in his cereal. Occasionally, if there are freshly baked cookies around (which thankfully isn’t often!), I’ll drink a big glass with them. Jeff, oddly enough, likes to drink a glass after eating a bowl of ice cream. Good thing he’s not lactose intolerant!

  17. Laura Said,

I am the one of those people who hates milk. My husband also doesn’t care for it. But we use it for cereal, and cooking. So we typically have a quart of 1% in our fridge. 🙂 I think I was probably 10 the last time I actually drank milk from a glass.

  18. jen Said,

I forgot to tell you our milk is $2.67 a gallon…sorry.

  19. Southern Girl Said,

I DO drink milk! Sometimes more often than others, but lately I’ve been trying to drink more because calcium from low-fat dairy supposedly aids in weight loss. We ONLY drink skim milk — I don’t think I’ve had anything other than that since about 1991! The very thought of whole milk makes me sick. Blech. 😉

  20. Susanne Said,

We loooove milk and most milk products! And it’s 1%. Although my son would prefer skim and my youngest would like 2% we’ve comprimised at 1%. I refuse to start buying one of every kind and having 5 open bottles of milk in the fridge. I buy approximately 4-6 bottles (4 litres which is about a gallon) a week, but I also have a dayhome so I’m not sure how much my family actually drinks of that. Most of it. Right now we pay anywhere from $3.19 at a superstore to up to almost $5 at a corner/convenience store.

  21. Dawn Said,

::shudder:: do *not* like milk. i love lots of other dairy products but the only time i have milk is on my cereal & i do *not* drink it. i usually only buy whole milk, but i will use 2%. anything less than that is just cloudy water to me. and i barely go through a pint of milk a week!

  22. Jen Said,

We buy 1% milk. I would probably buy skim, but my little boy is a tad too skinny and can use all the fat he can get. I don’t really like to drink milk by itself, but I do drink it with PBandJ or cookies/cake. I like chocolate milk on occasion and I usually have a bowl of cereal for breakfast and then another at night for a snack (bad habit I know).

Replying to your comment on my blog because I have no idea how to do it otherwise–We do kids choice on Friday and usually do a date night (take out and a movie at home) after the kids are in bed. So I do have a break on Fridays and we also go to my mom’s about once a week for dinner as well. I could never cook 7 nights a week (at least not really complicated meals).

  23. Shawna Said,

My husband and I both love milk, but he drinks way more than I do. I buy 2 gallons a week of skim for us and 1 gallon of whole for the baby. I buy the Wal Mart brand skim milk. I just checked the receipt and skim milk went up tp $3.00!!! I didn’t even notice. I’m usually trying to feep Scamp occupied.
