Bar vs Wash

Body Wash Today’s exhilarating post is all about soap. Yes, the difference between using bar soap and body wash. It’s always a thrill a minute here at “Exceedingly Mundane” folks! 😀

I’ve discovered yet another generational thing, at least in our family. When we have house guests of a certain age, they don’t understand why we have this bottle of stuff in the shower/tub called “Body Wash”. They are always like “where is the soap?”, which to them, means a bar of soap. Now, most everyone under the age of 50 understands the concept of a liquid body wash, but some don’t. So, I’ve learned to keep a bar or two of soap on hand for certain overnight guests to our home.

But for us, we like and use body wash. Tim, thankfully, was willing to try switching years ago (even though I was worried he would think it was girly and not try it!) and decided he likes it. He likes the Lever 2000 brand, so I keep us stockpiled with that body wash. Me, I love the ones from Bath and Body Works, but I also buy some cheaper stuff (Suave, store brand) to use from time to time. My current body wash favorite is B&BW Cherry Blossom. Love the stuff.

So, how about you? What do you use? I’d love for you to leave me a comment and answer today’s “Question of the Day“. What kind of soap do you use at your house, bar soap or body wash? Do you have a brand preference? Do you use the smelly, girly stuff or just something utilitarian, just to get you clean and half-way fresh smelling?!

Have a great day, everyone!

  1. Susanne Said,

I’m a body wash only girl. I try different kinds because I like change, but it’s got to be the creamy kind, not the clear colored kind. My husband, he’s a bar soap guy all the way. Won’t even try the body wash. To each his own.

  2. Gail Said,

I think I have those same houseguests as you come to my house and want bar soap too! But surely you aren’t talking ABOUT me are you!
We use body wash, both of us……but we keep bar soap too for guests. We use bar soap sometimes.

  3. Heidi Said,

Oh, I think this is a good question, and not boring at all!

We mostly use body wash, even for the little guy (baby wash). I like the moisturizing kinds and I just buy whatever I can get the cheapest (Suave actually isn’t too bad, but sometimes I have coupons for something better). My husband is picky about the scent–so that it isn’t too girly–although I think he really likes the citrus scents.

I still have bar soap around (guest soaps) and I do keep a bar of soap on hand for when my parents visit. They much prefer bar soap and my dad has always loved glycerin soap for some reason.

That all being said, sometimes I think that Dial Antibacterial bar soap works way better than any body wash! Does anyone agree? Hmmmm…

  4. Southern Girl Said,

I’m not adverse to using either one, but I’d have to say I mostly use bar soap, and I’m not terribly picky about what kind. It’s usually Dove though, mostly out of long-standing habit in the family. *g* Now, if someone gives me some pretty-smelling liquid soap/body wash, I’ll happily use it. I have some nice lavender-scented stuff I got for my birthday last year, and I think there’s some raspberry-scented in a closet, but I guess it doesn’t count if I’m not actually using it, huh? 😉

  5. Debi Said,

I’m definitely a body wash gal. As is Annie. The boys even use kids-type body wash. But hubby is bar soap guy. Don’t see that ever changing.
As for brand? I buy whatever…just have to check the scent first, but anything that smells too “perfume-y” makes me sick to my stomach.

  6. Karla Said,

I use body wash…usually Dove or something that moisturizes. My hubby uses bar soap (Irish Spring).

I love using a “poofy” with my body wash, too. 🙂

  7. Stacy Said,

Body Wash – right now I have the B&BW Red Hot 3 in 1 body wash. Of course, hubby is difficult and must have lever 2000 bar soap. The guest bath is stocked with soaps that come from hotels. Terrible, huh?

  8. Shawna Said,

    Your shower is so clean!

I use body wash, plain old Wal Mart brand with no fancy scents. On occassion, I will use B&BW Sun-Ripened Raspberry shower gel, but one bottle of that lasts me 2 years!

Beef uses a bar of soap, usually Zest. He doesn’t use a wash rag either. Just soap to skin. If I have to use a bar, I like using a rag.

BTW, can you tell I’m from the South? — wash rag instead of wash cloth!

  9. jen Said,

We use Dial soap…in a bar….Scott has sensitive skin and we have always used this…never changed.

  10. Laura Said,

I guess I’m old school… I use bar soap. 🙂 My husband has always used bar soap until recently. For Christmas I bought him some really great-smelling body wash (from the men’s collection at Bath and Body) and a loofah too. I’m not sure how well he likes it yet. The thing is, I always use a washcloth, and K never has. So the whole “putting soap on something else first” is weird for him. Especially with the SUPER sudsing action of a loofah. Heh.

  11. Susie Said,

I just bought some Caress Glowing Touch Silkening Body Wash, and it smells heavenly! I use a bar sometimes, but I do prefer the wash. It provides so much more lather, and there are so many varieties!

  12. kaliblue Said,

I like the body washes. I keep them in the guest bath too. Some people who come to visit don’t like to use soap after others. Hubs on the other hand is a bar soap man. The only time he uses body wash is when we are visiting someone because that is what I bring :-). Men!!! *giggles*

  13. BeckyKay Said,

I usually use Oil of Olay bodybar. However, we also have bottles of Bath & Body Works Temptations bodywash/shampoo/bubblebath in our shower. I bought chocolate and peppermint! The peppermint is my favorite!

DH uses the manly body wash stuff.

  14. Becky Said,

Well, I use both. I try different ones all the time. As far as what is in the shower now that I’m using…Olay bar soap with shea butter, Tone Mango Splash body wash and Victoria’s Secret Romantic Wish shower gel!!! I used to work for Bath & Body Works for 4 years and I stockpiled all kinds of stuff. That was almost seven years ago and you know I just ran out of stuff to use only 1 1/2 years ago. Sad, huh? I had a mild obsession with all things B&BW! Hubby uses Irish Spring bar soap…his favorite. But, he has been known to use body wash (especially when I worked for B&BW)! 🙂 Have a great day!

  15. Sherry Said,

We all use body wash! I absolutely love the cherry blossom too! I had it in the fall and it was the bomb!

I bought (online) Japanese Cherry Blossom thinking it would be similar, but NO! It’s woodsy and strong — it’s ok, but definitely not me. I’m suffering through the bottle right now!

I also like the Swiss Minerals one and anything lavendar!

    Sherry

  16. annie Said,

I love the smell of body wash, but can’t really use it. I buy the lotion and sprays from bath and body but am allergic to really fragrant soaps in the shower bath… I get bladder infections… I even have to lean over when I wash my hair (btw I only use biolage… love it). So, I use ivory bar soap, its the only thing that I can use.
I love the lavender stuff and use it in my daughters bath though… and my 13 year old son has every scent of axe body wash, guess he’s believing those commercials and trying to catch some girls… 🙂

  17. Kathy M Said,

All about the body wash here. Dh likes that Axe stuff. I’m fine with suave. I even have the kids use it because it doesn’t make the mess that soap does.

  18. Dawn Said,

body wash only. soap is too drying for my skin & Ivory soap actually makes my *itchy*! i usually have some B&BW (something vanilla-scented or one of the lighter scents, usually, but right now i have Twisted Peppermint from the Sweet Temptations Christmas collection — so exhilirating!), a bottle of something cheaper (like Suave), and Caress Daily Silk (love the way this smells!). i change up based on my mood at the time.

  19. Kim Said,

I hadn’t really given this much thought, but I’m thinkin’ I need to go to bath and body works tomorrow! I’m horrified to admit this, but I use Dial. Today was the last time though; maybe my poor dry skin will be happier tomorrow.

My daughters love body wash, so I’m not sure why I hadn’t used it much myself. Boy, am I ever rambling here.

  20. local girl Said,

I have to use the body wash from Bath & Body Works. My favorite is Cherry Blossoms.

  21. mamichelle Said,

Don’t laugh but we still use bar soap. Or actually, I use both. I use soap to clean (love the smell of Lever) and then I use Bath & Body Works on my scrubby to exfoliate. My hubby only uses soap (either Lever or Dial tropical).

My son and mom use body wash in their bathroom (only Dove for my son – he loves the smell and is very picky).

  22. Cam Said,

Bar soap, & the cheapest brand I can find. I’m way too cheap & old-fashioned to use anything else. I’ve gotten body wash as a gift, and I end up throwing them away after they sit unused for a couple of years. You can’t use a washcloth with body wash, and it never really gets me clean…as in, it doesn’t take care of the sweaty armpits. 😛 Sorry if that was TMI!

  23. Jim McKee Said,

    Jurgens — trust the mildness.

  24. Amanda Said,

Had to ring in on this one…. I LOVE body wash and have used it for years! Mark, on the other hand, feels that he must have a bar of soap. So we have both in our shower!

As far as brands or fragrance goes, I have to be really careful what I buy, because I have very sensitive skin. I love the Oil of Olay Shea Butter body wash. I like to get it in bulk at Sam’s or use a coupon at WalMart. I also use the Skin So Soft body wash from Avon. I really like the Soft & Sensual and the Original scents. I have tried some of the body wash from Bath and Body Works and love is as well. Some fragrances do not break me out but others do, so I always buy the trial size first if I want to splurge on one from there.

    Fun Question!

  25. Shayna Said,

I LOVE B&BW, and right now am using the Sinfully Hot Chocolate one! Anything floral right now has me heaving over the sink! And I am constantly catching my hubby stealing it! He even tried a taste of my Philosophy Strawberry Milkshake at one point because it smelled so good!

  26. deb Said,

I think this is a great question!
Okay, I use shower gels / body wash like Bath and Body Works or Avon and sometimes other brands…just whatever scent or packaging catches my eye. My very favorite shower gel is B&BW Sandalwood Rose but my NEWEST favorite (::grin::) is Avon’s Skin So Soft Fusions Light & Lush Body Wash. I have the same stuff in the Soft & Sensual scent that I haven’t tried yet but it smells great, too. As a matter of fact, I’ve set aside the B&BW for now because I can’t get enough of these Avon scents! One of my employees sells Avon which is a good AND bad thing for me lol! Bath and shower gels are one of my weaknesses. I have at least 4 different bottles of various ones in the shower caddy right now.

Scott uses bar soap. He loves moisturizing soaps. His favorite soap is one of those real expensive Dead Sea soaps. Sometimes for a gift, I’ll give him a set of luxurious bar soaps ;~) Right now he’s using a new Irish Spring scent that I really like called Micro Clean and it smells wonderful!

  27. Dianne Said,

Body wash – hands down. I love that you got 26 comments (now 27) about such a mundane topic. Goes to show you little things mean a lot!

Oh hubby – he’s a shampoo man. Shampoo for hair and the rest. Come to think of it, perhaps he’s the original body wash guy!!!

  28. Suzanne Said,

    I use bar soap…………am surprised you don’t !!

  29. Nichole M Said,

We actually use both. I use bar soap for the “really dirty places” and body wash for everything else. My body wash is B&BW Magnolia Blossom. That is my favorite scent. My second fav is Twisted Peppermint. The husband is old school… bar soap all the way, lather up the washcloth really well. 😉
