Hambone Soup

I tried a new soup recipe yesterday, for a “Hambone Soup”. It’s really just a vegetable soup, but it does use a hambone to flavor it, hence the name. Since I still had the bone left from our Christmas Eve ham, I went looking for recipes to use with the bone. (The ham was delicious, by the way, and only the second ham I’ve ever made in my life. It was spiral sliced and I did a honey glaze on it and it was deee-licious!)

I looked online, and found a recipe on AllRecipes.com (one of my favorite places to search for new recipes, since I love reading all of the feedback and reviews that people leave). I made a ton of changes to the original recipe, so it is quite different from what is posted.

For those of you who don’t “get it” – I love, love, love that the soup is technically named “Hambone Soup”. It’s really just a flavorful vegetable soup, but I knew I had to make this because of the name. Get it, Hambone. Our main site is called Hambones.org and we’re sometimes called the Hambones. Get it??!! Funny, huh?! 🙄

Anyway, I’ll post the recipe, along with my numerous changes, in the extended section. Be sure to read all of my notes at the bottom. Here’s a couple of pictures of the soup, and also the bone cooling on the counter. Guess who eyeballed the bone for a long time, before he started barking at it?!! He’s going to get the bone later today… we saved it for a rainy day. It’s been raining here since before we got up this morning, and I’m afraid it may rain off and on all day. Beau won’t be able to go outside and play, so we thought the bone would make him happy! 😆

Adapted from a recipe at AllRecipes. I made a lot of changes!

Stacy’s Notes – Made this December 2006. I made a lot of changes, both on personal preference and also from reading the reviews and comments at AllRecipes.com. We had a hambone left from our Christmas Eve spiral sliced honey ham I had baked. I used the ham bone, along with a couple of meaty chunks of ham with fat on them. I left out the bell pepper because I don’t like it. I used one med-large yellow onion, diced. I used 2 russet potatoes, peeled and diced, and didn’t measure. I didn’t use the can of tomatoes, but rather an 8 oz can of tomato sauce. I used one can of kidney beans, drained, and also 1 can of great northern beans, drained. I also added a couple of handfuls of frozen cut green beans, some chopped baby carrots and a heaping tablespoon of minced garlic. I also added some Nature’s Seasoning, a dash of dry mustard and a couple of dashes of ground red pepper to the mixture. Instead of the bouillon/water combination, I did this – I made up 2 cups of chicken broth using 2 bouillon cubes, 2 cups of veggie broth using 1 large veggie bouillon cube, and added some water to the tomato sauce can and added that as well. We both thought the broth was delicious and probably the best part of the soup. From all the of the seasonings and the bone itself, it had a terrific flavor. I cooked this in my large Rival crockpot (it was full to the top) for 1 hour on HI, then about 7-8 hours on low. Very good, a definite keeper. Makes a ton for us though!

P.S. Guess what we’re having for leftovers today?!

  2. Gail Said,

P.S. the soup looks good but I bet it would have been so much better with bell peppers in it! Silly girl, depriving Tim! (are you sure we’re sisters! I like bell peppers and we are usually EXACTLY alike!)

  3. Eden Said,

Looks sounds and looks absolutely de-lish! I’ll have to give this one a try b/c I have the bone from the Christmas ham I made. TTYL

  4. Dianne Said,

Yum. I might try this for dinner tonight, except it’s almost 5:00, not enough time to get something going in the crockpot. Besides that, the little bit of ham I have is in the freezer and no bone. Hmmm. Can you tell I’m hungry and your pictures aren’t helping? Can you tell I should be cleaning and thinking about what to have for my NY eve get together tomorrow night, instead of visiting blogdom? Anyways I’ll definitely be trying this. And I love the Hambones thing!
