Christmas Came Early

Well, it appears that Christmas has come early to our house!

We’ve had company for the last few days, and will for a few more days. Then, we’ll hit the road to visit both sides of our family over the 3 day Christmas weekend. We’ll open presents in three places, and visit with lots of family. We’re really looking forward to it.

Yesterday (Tuesday), I was going to wash the sheets on our guest bed, since Round 1 of our company was leaving, and Round 2 was headed in that evening. I tried 6 times to wash the sheets. Either the tub was full of sudsy water when it finished, or else when the cycle finished, the sheets were dirty. And I do mean dirty, with lint and gunk and grass and dirt. I’m not sure where all the gunk is coming from. Tim checked some stuff and opened up part of the washer trying to fix it. We decided it was time for a new set. After all, I bought this set after I got out of college and it is nineteen (yes, 19!) years old. I think that’s a decent life cycle, so we decided it was time to get a new set. Merry Christmas to me!

We went to Sears and got one of the new hE washer and dryer sets with the pedestals. They didn’t have them all in the warehouse locally, so they had to get them from another warehouse. So, I have to wait a couple of days for them to arrive. In the mean time, I already had 3 loads of clothes, sheets and towels waiting to be washed. By the time they get here on Friday, I’m sure that will double. And boy, I sure hope they get here on Friday like they promised. Otherwise, we’re going to run out of clean towels and underwear before Christmas is over! 😆

I’ll post a picture of them once they’re here… nothing more exciting that new appliances for Christmas! We’re also needing a dishwasher, and I actually thought I would get that for Christmas. I’ve been having trouble with our dishwasher for several months now. A couple of the tines have broken off, and the main problem is that the detergent doesn’t dispense half of the time. Ours has a little flip-open door on the door of the dishwasher and about half the time when it’s finished, that door has never popped open and the detergent is in there all gunked up. So, I have been thinking it’s time to get a new dishwasher. A quieter one is the main thing I’m after. Ours sounds like a jet engine taking off!

I told Tim the other day… 2007 is going to be the Year of the Appliance for us!

OK, how about a Question of the Day: Do you have a major appliance in your house that you want or need to buy, or replace? Something that is old and nearly worn out, or just something you’d like to get a newer version of? Leave me a comment and let me know!

  1. Claire Said,

Well, since I live in an apartment I can’t really get many appliances for myself but I would LOVE to have a different refrigerator. When my parents got their new one, I saw mine…it cost a whole $150! Um…that should tell you about its size! OH, I think I need a new vacuum cleaner. Mine keeps getting stuck, i.e. the brush won’t spin. I can fix it but it’s annoying to have to do that every time!

My mom just got a new refrigerator and now wants/needs a new…1 – microwave, 2- dishwasher, 3 – stove, 4 – oven! Yes, they need a kitchen makeover!

Question: What kind of flour did you get? I was at Lakeland kroger yesterday and didn’t see any while wheat pastry flour. The only thing I thought was that maybe you got the white whole wheat or 50/50 AP-whole wheat. Let me know!

  2. mamichelle Said,

Well, dh and I were just talking about getting a new dryer. We bought the new he washer when ours died but the dryer still works. It’s only about 20 yrs. old!!! We also need a new fridge, stove & dishwasher. Our house was built 11 yrs. ago and that’s how old the appliances are. Time to go shopping.

Enjoy yours! You’re gonna love it. Just make sure you only use a small amount of detergent! Enjoy, Stacy! And Merry Christmas!!

  3. Gail Said,

You’re gonna LOVE the washer and dryer! Well, I love mine anyway and like I’ve been telling you, you can get SO much more stuff in them.
I think I need/want a new fridge; this one is about 18 yrs old I think. Probably should have gotten it when we remodeled the kitchen and got other new appliances, but it’s hard to buy all those things at once!
I’m wanting a vacuum to keep upstairs so I don’t have to lug my other one up and down the stairs; an upright for carpet will do for upstairs!

  4. deb Said,

Woooo! A new washer / dryer…I’d love to replace mine! As well as my refrigerator :))
We bought a new stove 2 years ago and that’s the first new appliance I’ve had in I don’t know when.

I hope you enjoy your new washer and dryer. I’ll have to go to the Sears site and see whatcha got ;~)

    Merry Christmas!!

  5. Southern Girl Said,

Well, a couple of weeks ago we DID have a broken oven that needed replacing and an old ugly refrigerator that SOME of us in the house wanted gone — now, we just have a new oven and a new fridge. We’re pretty good in the appliance department for the time being. 😉

  6. Laura Said,

K and I were just arguing about this today. Our dryer is on its last leg (I’m hoping it makes it through the end of the year) but our washer is newer. We didn’t buy either of them, and we really have no idea how old they are, but they were obviously purchased at different times. K thinks we should be able to just buy a new dryer, but I want a new set. The washer is just fine but it isn’t real new (I would guess 10 years old) and there are some other features I want. Plus I would just love to have them match. I’m not even looking to get one of the new pretty HE ones… although those would be awesome.

Last year for Christmas I got a new dishwasher (old one didn’t work), microwave and oven/stove (the old ones were original in the house, about 20 years old).
What do we still need? Oh, everything. 😉 But yes, we absolutely need a new fridge. That one is harder to justify, because if it works, it works. But it’s the size of a shoebox and we literally can’t fit food in there. It’s really bad. Hehe.

  7. Shawna Said,

We need a new dishwasher because it gets stuck during the washing and drying cycle, so we have to manually turn the nob. If we leave with the dishwasher on, it will continue to wash and wash and wash forever!!!

A new washer and dryer would be nice, too, since ours are handy-me-downs, but neither have given us problems, yet.

  8. Kathy m Said,

Ok, I’ve been married almost 18 years and i’m on my 3rd washer. I just got the HE front loaders amost 2 years ago and I LOVE it. You will be glad you got the pedestals because it would be too hard on your back without them. Enjoy the new appliances.

  9. Heidi Said,

Good luck with your new washer/dryer. You will love HE. I have just the smaller versions of the GE ones and I actually stacked them (dryer on top of washer) to make more room in my laundry room (okay, my husband actually stacked them…).
If I could replace any appliance in my house….hmmmm…eiither the dishwasher or the heat pump. Neither of them are old enough to replace but the dishwasher is a tad bit loud and the heat pump seems a little underpowered. But that’s all in my dream world anyhow.

  10. Cam Said,

I missed this post this week. Sorry about your washer! But I’m glad you’ve gotten new ones–and hopefully the pedestal thing will be taken care of soon.
I mentioned it in my other comment, but WASHER! Oh how I need a new one! I actually need a new dryer, too. They were in the house when we bought it nearly 5 years ago, and they were a couple of years old at that time…so really, I don’t think they’re too old.
The washer gets stuck right before the spin cycle, and I always have to go manually open the door and shut it again in order to un-stick it…otherwise it sits there with the motor churning with nothing happening, complete with burning rubber smell from the motor. So I can never put in a load of clothes unless I’m going to be right there to babysit it. Today it was trying not to even spin, but I finally got it to do it.
The dryer…oh, the dryer needs babysitting, too. The heating coil doesn’t turn off when the cycle ends! Whenever it’s in the “off” setting, the drum stops, but the coil will burn on…and on…SCARY! I have to go to the fuse box and turn off the fuse whenever a load is done. It’s the only way to cut power to the heating coil. And the fuse has to stay off until I need the dryer again, then I go turn the fuse on. To top it off, the fuse box is in G’s bedroom–so it always has to be timed around his nap times because the fuse makes a loud CLACK when it gets turned on or off!
I’d say I really need a new w/d set, huh?! 😀 It’s just not possible right now financially, but soon I’m afraid we won’t have a choice!
Whew…sorry for the long comment, but I had lots of issues to explain. 😛
