Christmas Music & QOTD

Slowly, over the years, I have been buying Christmas CD’s. I absolutely love Christmas music, but I sort of hate to spend the money on a CD that I really only listen to for a month or so out of the year. I don’t spend a lot of money on music to begin with, and before I got my iPod, I mostly listened to the radio. But, I do love Christmas music and so I would splurge and buy myself one CD every year or two.

Then, a few years ago, I discovered the CD’s that Target marketed at the holiday season. They are called “Sounds of the Season” and they usually run them at really good prices, like 5.99 or 6.99. They used to do them by genre, and I would almost always buy the country music one. I have several of those, probably 5 or 6. I bought the NBC one last year that has a mix of music by artists like Rob Thomas, Amy Grant, Michael Buble, Gavin DeGraw, Chris Botti, etc, and I do love that one. I also have some other Christmas CD’s by artist, like Harry Connick, Clay Aiken, Celine Dion, and I have one of Billboard classics from years ago that has the original versions of White Christmas, etc on them (and it’s a great CD!) Anyway, I got excited about looking for the new music in Target this year, only to be disappointed that they’ve changed their format. Now, they have them by artist, which is great, but I really miss them doing them by genre (like country or jazz or the NBC collection). This year, the featured artists seem to be Enya, John Legend and Lionel Richie. I might want to get the John Legend one, but I looked at it, and there’s only 6 tracks on there (for 5.99, so a buck a song, which is the same as iTunes). Sigh. I always hate it when I find something I really like and then they go and change it on me 😆

Anyway, here’s some of the older “Sounds of the Season” CD’s that I have bought at Target…

Sounds of the Season

Sounds of the Season

Last year, I started uploading some of my Christmas CD’s to my iPod and I made a Christmas playlist. This year, I have uploaded a few more, and there are probably 2-3 more that I want to get on there. Now that I have my iHome iPod/clock radio (check it out here), I can pop my iPod in and listen to my Christmas music while I’m in our bedroom or bathroom. I also load up our CD changer in the living room with all Christmas music, so that I can listen in there.

So, that brings us to today’s Question of the Day: Do you have a lot of Christmas music? Do you listen to your CD’s in the car, on the computer, on your iPod or just around the house? Do you have a favorite Christmas CD or maybe a favorite artist that you love to hear sing Christmas music?

  1. Gail Said,

I have quite a few Christmas CD’S…..and I listen to them everywhere! In the car, definitely; on the computer some as well and around the house a lot! I got my iPod after Christmas last year so I’ll be using it this year also……that is, if I ever get the music back on it after that un-named child accidentally deleted all my music! Argh.
I loved the Sounds of the Season ones too; have one that has Josh Groban on it singing O Holy Night that is pretty. Love the Harry Connick one and “It Must Have Been Ol Santa Claus” is special to me. A lot of our CD’S have various artists on them and I like the variety of that. I have several instrumental ones too. Gotta go get all my CD’S out now after thinking about it!

  2. Southern Girl Said,

I don’t have a lot of Christmas music, no. I have Steven Curtis Chapman’s latest Christmas CD, the title of which escapes me at the moment, Clay Aiken’s “Merry Christmas with Love” and the new Walmart exclusive EP “All is Well” (if you don’t have it, you must get it — for the title track alone!), and there’s one other I listen to a lot called “Deep Still Christmas.” It’s Celtic hymns and carols — beautiful! Don’t have a CD player in the car, so I don’t listen there, mostly just on my computer and throughout the house. We’re having a reception here this afternoon, and Clay’s MCWL is playing in the living room. 🙂

  3. Stacy Said,

I’m all about Harry at Christmas!!! (Connick, Jr. that is)

  4. Dianne Said,

I do have quite a few Christmas CDs. I have house ones (the popular favs like Bing and Harry and Barry), car ones (usually Christian ones) and work ones (Jim Brickman, Kenny G, etc.). I’m not a big fan of the “mixes” when it comes to Christmas music; not sure why except that I want to listen to something particular that suits my mood, whether I’m cooking, decorating or (way too much right now) working.

  5. Cam Said,

    Good question…
I have only a few Christmas songs that I absolutely love, and they’re all on a cd that Philip made for me a few years back–he downloaded all the songs. The songs are:
“Do they know it’s Christmas?” by Band Aid,
“Baby please come home” by U2,
    “Happy Christmas” by John Lennon,
“Please Come home for Christmas” by the Eagles,
    “December Child” by Cyndi Lauper
    “Last Christmas” by George Michael,
    “Christmas in Dixie” by Alabama
“Same old Auld Lang Syne” by Dan Fogelberg
“The Angels Cried” by Alan Jackson & Alison Krauss

I play them as background music in the house, from Thanksgiving up till Christmas. Also, every Saturday evening, Philip takes G with him to town to buy our dinner (we always eat take-out on Saturday nights)…during this 45 minutes or so that I have the house all to myself, I turn off all the lights, but leave the Christmas tree & all the Christmas lights on. I put on this Christmas CD and sit on the couch all snuggled up in a blanket…I listen to each song while enjoying the beautiful lights, the tree, the nativity set, and while savoring the music. It really helps me feel the Christmas spirit.
I also now have them all on a special Christmas playlist on my iPod, as well.

The only commercial Christmas CD I’ve ever really liked is Charlotte Church’s. I love it. I love O Holy Night, and she sings it beautifully.

  6. Dawn Said,

i have a fair number of Christmas cds. my two most favorite are Jim Brickman’s “the Gift” and Martina McBride’s “White Christmas”.

  7. Laura Said,

Christmas music is an integral part of the season for me, especially when I was growing up. Some of the music I used to listen to will always be part of Christmas. I don’t have many CDs because my old Christmas albums are still “at home”; these days I just download music. Lately I have been more interested in burning Christmas mixes, so last year I did a “sad” one (big surprise) and it’s awesome.
We have at least one local radio station playing Christmas music 24/7 for at least a month before Christmas, and my brother has XM in his vehicle (with 5+ exclusive Christmas stations during the season) so we are listening to Christmas music whenever we’re driving anywhere.

  8. Jody Said,

I agree with Dawn.. my very favorite Christmas Cd is “White Christmas” by Martina McBride. I LOVE that one, and sometimes even play it when it’s not even winter.

My second favorite is the Time-Life Treasury of Christmas CD. It’s a 2 CD set that have all of my favorite classic Christmas songs on it.

Between those 2 CD’s that’s all I ever need to really listen to at Christmas. 🙂

  9. Bev Said,

My mother had a 4 record set (yes, vinyl) from Reader’s Digest that we used to play every year at Christmas. Each of the sides of the different albums were of a different style. Classical, Traditional, Childrens, etc. I loved it but with no record player any longer it went the way of all of our vinyls a long time ago.

My favorite Christmas album now is Christmas Eve and Other Stories by the Trans-Siberan Orchestra. It gets the most airplay and the Kid even listens to it. I’ve since gotten their other Christmas CDs but this one will always be the favorite.

I guess I need something different but I’m like you, I had putting out the $$$ for something that only gets listened to for a month once a year. 😉
