Names & Nicknames

Today’s Question of the Day is all about nicknames.

Since we just got Beau a few days ago, we’re trying to teach him his new name. He was referred to as “Sonny Boy” at the foster home where he was living, although he didn’t really respond to it very well. Come to find out, I think our new dog has canine ADD. Do they have that for dogs? 🙂 Maybe he’s still just got a lot of puppy in him, but he doesn’t focus well. He’s all over the place. He has an incredible nose and is always smelling and winding everything. He’s always looking around and he seems to have great senses. But, the downside to that is that he’s not paying that much attention to us. He hasn’t really learned his name yet, but we think he’s starting to get the hang of it. We call him Beau all the time, but we’ve both started to come up with alternate names for him, nicknames really.

Tim’s favorite thing to call him is “Knucklehead”. As in, I’m trying to teach you “sit” or “stay” and you’re not listening, you knucklehead. I have been calling him Bo-Bo, and also sometimes pooper dooper, but we are trying to call him Beau all the time.

Tim has a couple of nicknames for me as well (won’t get into those in this post), and I have a couple that I call him. More terms of endearment than nicknames.

So, that’s today’s “Question of the Day” – do you have nicknames or pet names or terms of endearment for your spouse, your kids, your pets, etc? If so, what are they? How did they come about? I’d love to hear!

  1. Stacy Said,

Vader gets called a random amount of things. Vay-Vay, Boo, Booger Butt, it really depends on the mood I’m in. He responds to them all. I guess he figures if he is the only other “person” in the house besides me that I’m talking to him.

Jeff is usually Honey. But on rare occassion I’ll pull out the old dating name and call him Pookie again. I don’t really know why I started calling him that…

I like this question of the day. I may have to repost my answer over at my blog. I wonder if I will have time when I get home???

  2. Debi Said,

I’m not going to share the pet name hubby and I have for each other as it is a bit embarrassing. 🙂 But we call our cats various names besides their real ones (Mocha and Storm). “Little girl”, “sweetie”, pretty ordinary really.

  3. Claire Said,

I have no nicknames for my spouse, children, or significant other…I have none of those! 🙂 I call my mother, Mama when I talk about her and Mom or Mama when I talk to her depending on the conversation. I call my father Dad when I talk about him and Daddy when I talk to him.

They call me Claire-e-beth or Claire-bear if using a nickname. I have an aunt who calls me Lizzie. My best-friend’s dad calls me Clara-belle.

The only other nickname story I have is kind of funny. The friend that I had the surprise party for is named Justin. well, for some reason I could NOT think of his name at the beginning of the year but there was a name in my head…the only name that I could think of…Oliver! I don’t know WHERE that came from, but sometimes I call him Oliver because of that.

  4. mamichelle Said,

My youngest son, Greg, has always been Boo or BooBoo. He was always getting hurt because he was into everything, little devil! So now that he’s 16, I try not to call him Boo.

My oldest son, Evan, is Evsy. He used to be pumpkin (has red hair) but then I switched to Evsy which is pretty funny for a 20 yo.!

I call my son Bubs, just as a joke.. Not sure why! LOL

  5. Laura Said,

I don’t think my husband and I have ever called each other by our real names. Well, we do in public…

We have SOO many nicknames that I can’t even begin to list them, but my latest nickname from my husband is “peanut pie”.

I’m curious what we would do if we had kids… heh.

  6. Laura Said,

ps. Lately I’ve taken to calling him “K” even to people in real life who know him – his grandmother, our friends, etc. Hehe.

  7. Dawn Said,

Our nephew calls our dog Ruby…Ruby Tuesday 🙂 I think she likes that name too…

  8. Southern Girl Said,

I call my little brother a variation of his name, something our aunt who died when he was just six called him since he was born. I guess it’s kind of a way to keep her “alive.”

As for our pets, Jake the dog gets called “Jakey,” “Jakey-wakey,” and “Little man.” For some bizarre reason I call my cat Pumpkin “Lambchop.” Before Pumpkin, I sometimes called my cat Lil’ Bit “Pumpkin,” so I figure I’ll have to name my next cat Lampchop. 😉 Occasionally I call her Pumpkin Doodle Spoodle, too.

  9. deb Said,

Dixie Doodlebug (Dixie), Bella Lugosi (Belle), Sugie (Sugar), Hankypoo (Hank), Elllllvis!! (Elvis)…when we had Dolly, I called her Dollydollybobolly ;~)

  10. Suzanne Said,

    yes we have these nicknames.
Nevada Rose is called Nevada Barr, Nevada Roo and Roo roo when I am feeling spunky.
Pearl the cat is called Pearl-lie, Pearl Bailey, Lee Lee (as in Pearl-lee!)….like the southern people call out…..pearl-leeeeeeeee.
on and on we go !!

  11. presentstorm Said,

I call Gizmo ” Giz Giz ” or baby boy and Daizii ( Daisy) I call Daisy Duke or Dukster sometimes…. and then there is baby girl 🙂

I call my hubby Punkin, Baby or Baby Love

he calls me Sugar, Sugar Bear or Baby Love

  12. Cam Said,

    Let’s see…
We call Grayson: Gray, Gay-gah (this is how he used to say his name when he first started talking), the Grayster, and Buddy (as in, hey, Buddy!).

I used to call Philip “Pip” when we were in high school, but not so much anymore. Everyone also used to call him “Flop” in high school & college because of a haircut he used to have.

My nicknames are Cammy (lots of people call me this), Camster, Camalamadingdong, Cam the Sham, and Norelco (Philp dubbed me this for no apparent reason).

    We love nicknames here. 😛

  13. Trista Said,

Okay, I call Joshua a number of things including: Joshy Poo, Joshy, JJ, Joshy Woshy, Mister, Monkey, and Little Man.
    I call Alan baby.
Alan called me puddles (b/c I cry at the drop of a hat), punkin butt (this sounds ugly, but he is not calling my butt big, promise), and DAAAARRRLING (you just have to hear him say it…too funny!)
Since we are on the subject of nicknames, I had to share that my paw-paw used to call every female “sister”. He would say to me, his granddaughter, Now sister, be careful with that or you will hurt yourself. Today, it sends me down memory lane when I hear Cory call Jennifer “sister”.
