This week’s topic: Vacation Spots

Do you buy books while on vacation/holiday?

Do you have favorite bookstores that you only get to visit while away on a trip?

What/Where are they?

I wish I had a really interesting answer for this week’s question. But you know, I don’t think I’ve ever made a trip to a bookstore while we were on vacation! Years ago, when I was in the midst of my scrapbooking phase, I would have Tim take me to a scrapbook store somewhere while we were on vacation. And a couple of years ago when we were in Savannah, we went a couple of times to the “Bob’s Your Uncle” Life is Good store. I LOVE Life is Good products! The idea of an entire store devoted to their products left me nearly breathless! But I’ve never made a special trip to a bookstore, isn’t that sad? I always take enough books with me when we travel and I haven’t run out yet. I hate to admit it, but we have a nice Barnes and Noble very close to my house, and a Borders across town. While I love to go there, I end up buying the majority of my books online or at a local Christian bookstore. I also utilize my local library – a lot.

Happy Reading!

  1. Sally Said,

No way is this a boring answer! In fact, we are a great deal alike!

  2. The Kool-Aid Mom Said,

Fun answer, actually. I’ve never been big into the scrap-booking thing… that would require way more organization than I’m capable of… but I appreciate the love people put into theirs. It’s cook to have a store devoted to it, we had one here, but it went out of business within a few months of opening.

  3. JEN Said,

I always enjoy taking a new book on vacation with me. I’m looking for a good one for October when we go to the beach.

  4. Karen Said,

I like taking a new book on vacation and sometimes I try to get one that fits in with the location or theme of where we’re going. Years ago, when I used to visit my grandma in New Jersey, we made it a ritual to go to a used book store that was down at the shore. It was called Escargo and it was in a big, old house. I would buy so many books, that often Iwould have to ship them home separately. I loved going there! I collected all of my Anne Morrow Lindbergh books from that store. All five volumes of her diaries and letters and some of her other writings, too. Great memories! Great question!

  5. Susanne Said,

We always end up in a bookstore when we go on vacation. Our favorite used to be in the big city we would visit each year. It was one of our favorite stops at the beginning of our holiday, one of the first things we did after checking in to the hotel. I’m not sure why we enjoyed it so much. It really was no different than any other Christian bookstore, but they had great deals and I think it was just a nice tradition in our minds. And it was fun to start the book we had purchased just for the holiday. Alas, they just closed down so this year, that tradition is no more. :v(

  6. Chris Said,

    That’s a great answer!

  7. Confuzzled Books Said,

It’s always good to have a few books stores near the homefront.

  8. Debi Said,

I don’t think we’ve ever been on vacation when we didn’t hit at least one bookstore! It’s kind of our down-time/relaxation thing after a busy day of whatever it is we’ve been doing.

I used to always know where all the scrapbook stores were along the way during vacation, too. But I haven’t done that in a few years now.

  9. marie Said,

I usually take enough books with me to get me through a trip, but I can’t help myself when it comes to books- I have to browse, if only out of curiosity. also I love taking home a book or two as a souvenir- local recipes, stories, dictionaries, etc., just something unique to that place to bring back to my library. 🙂

  10. Gail Said,

I’m not sure I’ve ever gone to a bookstore on vacation either! Now I have browsed through gift shops at hotels and even at that dude ranch we went to and occasionally bought something there but can’t recall a time it was an actual book store. Of course, I might remember it during the middle of the night, then I should probably call and tell you!

  11. sherry Said,

This is a good (and timely) question!

There is a really nice book store on Mackinac Island (Michigan) where I used to go a lot as a teenager with my family. I would always get either an Anne Rice book or Stephen king! Since then, I pick up whatever I am in the mood for.

Guess what? Lucky me, I am going to Mackinac at the end of August! And I know just what book I am going to look for — the first in the Yada Yada Prayer Group books!

  12. sandra Said,

I’ve never gone to a book store on vacation…unless you count picking up a book while in transit in Amsterdam? I guess I did then LOL

I just love books, no matter how many I have, I just have to add to it all the time…no bookstore is safe from me LOL

  13. Christy Said,

I do the same thing. I use Amazon.com ALOT and paperbackbookswap. Abebooks.com is also a great site for cheap books-and most have free shipping, another plus! I lvoe teh atmosphere at Borders and Barnes and Nobles BUT the books are so expensive!

  14. Bev Said,

If there is a used bookstore in a location we’re visiting or vacationing in, we’ll always go to it. We love used book stores and always find something we haven’t got in them. I’ve filled in a lot of out-of-print series that way. At the price of things today, I’m really glad that they are around. 😉

    Cheers

  15. Heidi Said,

I actually think I buy more books when I am vacationing. Otherwise I try to use the library. 🙂

  16. Kara Said,

I am hopeless in bookstores while on vacation. I rarely allow myself to buy books but something about being on vacation makes me a crazy book buying fiend! and I love finding the little locally owned stores in the various places we visit…such fun!

  17. Maria Said,

I usually take more than enough reading material with me but if we happen upon a bookstore and have time, we’ll walk around for a bit. We don’t always buy something but sometimes we do! LOL

I used to want to stop at the local scrapbook stores too. Now I like it if we can stop at the LYS (local yarn shop) to check out the goodies there.

  18. mamichelle Said,

It’s kind of weird but we haven’t been on a vacation in 2 yrs., mostly due to dh losing his job but now because the house is on the market.

Anyway, the only time I’ve been to a bookstore on vacation is when we used to go to Cape Cod. We would take the boys and let them each pick out a book for the week.

I always stock up and bring books with me though.
